Going Nuts Over Sprouting

Besides doing my regular WA activities, I've recently been going crazy over sprouting. You could say I'm obsessed.

Sprouting isn't new for me... I've been making broccoli sprouts in canning jars for years. But the method I'm using now is quite different. It's for making indoor salad greens.

Rather than doing it in jars, you soak the seeds -- and this works for a variety of veggies -- and then put them in small planters. Actually, aluminum bread pans of the half-loaf size are ideal.

You make up a mix of mostly peat moss with a little vermiculite and perlite. Putting some in plastic bags, you can add water and let the mix get damp throughout. That mix then goes into those bread pans or whatever you are using, and after soaking the seeds for about half a day, you spread them on top of the mix in the bread pans. You put damp paper on top (I use paper towels) and put it all in a dark place that isn't cold. Since we don't use our dishwasher, I store these in there.

They stay for about 4 days, or until the sprouts can be seen to have gone up about an inch. Next, I put them on a window ledge for a few days until I get nice colored sprouts, usually green but some plants produce purple or other colors. Then I cut the sprouts off above the sort-of-soil, rinse if needed, and put them in a salad.

So from dry seeds to food ready to eat is about a week or ten days.

As I've been setting this up, I've been thinking about how it relates to doing blog posts. Not that I am planning to eat my blogs, but the thing about this sprouting method is that it is very methodical, step by step.

I could be more methodical here. Maybe I will be!

Is there a niche lurking in the sprouting routine, Rosana. I like the analogy to succeed we need keep on improving.

What comparison between writing blog posts and growing sprouts!. The step-by-step method reminds me of keyword research, drafting, editing, and rewriting that we employ in blog writing.

Very interesting, Rosana!😎👍

That sounds like fun. We have been starting avocados and peppers from seeds. We should try sprouting.

Good analogy in that we must continually improve our process to be both efficient and effective thereby delivering the highest results.
