Family History Has Some Strange Stories

Here you see my father, his father, his mother, and his younger brother, probably in the 1920s. I'm deep into writing my memoir about my dad, and this week I have been writing about his life before I came along.

Evidently my grandfather was a bit of a womanizer. He would leave the family someplace and go off for a while. My grandmother didn't always have much money when he went off on his adventures.

On his deathbed he said to my father, who was by then a grown man, "I don't think I have any illegitimate children, but if any turn up, please be generous with them." When he told this story, my dad would laugh and say that nobody ever turned up.

I heard my father tell this story many times during my childhood, before I understood its full meaning. Now that I do understand, it's not quite so funny. Bit still, I'm including it in my book.

Good story, now, are you willing to see it through?

Check out your DNA through Ancestry, and you might just find a distant cousin or two....

My girlfriend found out her Dad did the same thing when a half-sister she never knew about contacted her. Now they are fast friends, so it actually worked out quite well.

Having Mormon family members on my mother's side, I've seen more than enough distant relatives, so I will pass on your suggestion. Thanks, though!

Well, I'm glad no one showed up. lol Did you ever notice in those old black and white photos no one ever smiles? I have a bunch like this. Everyone looks so sad or mad. Now we have kids taking selfies and smiling like nothing is wrong even if their life is totally falling apart.

Great photo there Rosana.

I'm sure that most families have some strange stories going back through the generations, I know that mine certainly has!

I hope that the memoir about your Father is coming along nicely my friend.

I love stories, I had a father who loved to tell them to me too. Many thanks Rosana!

That is a great story for your book Rosana. Doesn't matter that it's a "not so nice" one but it's colorful and add spice.
