Choosing a New Laptop After 5-year-old One Giving Up

My old Windows 8.1 laptop has served me well for years, but it's reached the point where it has too much the matter with it, physical things that really can't be fixed and are time-consuming to work around. So this week I did research to get a new one.

My goodness! There are a lot of new features to wade through. I did know I wanted to stay with Windows, despite once having had a MacBookPro I liked. But I am very used to Windows, even if I will have to learn Windows 10 and soon 11.

What brand? I was open to anything but after a few hours of web surfing, I settled on a brand I hadn't known about, Lenovo. It has a reputation for using good parts and thus its computers tend to last longer than average. Sure, I read disparaging remarks about it, but that was true of all the brands.

Then I had to decide what type of computer. A laptop for sure, as I share an office with my husband. That means I have to move out to the dining room when he is being consulted with and he needs to be on his laptop. This does happen often enough to be a factor.

Well, but what kind of laptop? I settled on a 14-inch screen on what is called a 2-in1, which is to say a laptop that can easily be turned into a tablet. Since my iPad is nine years old, this was appealing. Also, I do have a favorite coffee shop that I may frequent for work. So a smallish device is easier to carry around.

I wanted lots of RAM and of course a speedy SSD for the drive. All this pointed me to a Lenovo Yoga 2-in-1. I ordered one and now I am waiting (none too patiently) for it to arrive.

I'm still working on my old laptop, and I'm wondering if my brain will work faster when I get used to my new computer! Actually, I expect it will.

I have a Lenovo laptop and am very happy with it. I hope your new laptop will help you work faster also. ( Ha ha ).

I had a Lenovo computer or laptop a number of years ago. As I remember it worked well for me.

I'm pleased you are educated on the need for RAM. I used to purchase computer/laptop items through a computer supply company who were good and could be trusted to provide just what I required. Therefore, I had no knowledge of RAM.

These days, having moved to a different region, I make my own decisions regarding equipment and with no knowledge of RAM, almost twelve months ago I purchased a new laptop only to find that it is very low on RAM. Quite disastrous!

I hope your new computer arrives very soon, Rosana.

I would say Lenovo is a good choice. They took over the old IBM Think Pad line several years ago and have put that knowledge to good use (they still make think pads as well, but they are expensive).

I am using a Lenovo idea pad 700 that I bought in 2015 I think. I upgraded it 2 years ago with an SSD drive and it still works well (despite falling to the pavement from a backpack when cycling last year).

It has cracks in the frame and some plastic has popped in places. But it still works well.

I hope you have similar luck with yours.

Lenova is a good brand of computer. Good for you to find something that will work for you!
