Africa is not a country, its a Continent.

Since I can't find inspiration to create content on my website today, I thought I'd give WA a try and talk about something that has been bothering me for a while.

Recently I visited my family and friends in Kenya (that is where I am from)

I had such a lovely time, so as I was sharing my stories about my trip, someone asked me, so how is the weather in Africa this time of the year? I answered, I won't know because I have only been to Kenya.

Kenya is a big Country

This reminds me of a time I had a very interesting conversation with a couple who found it interesting that I was from Kenya because they had always wanted to go to Kenya for a Safari. So anyway, they told me that they had an African friend and they think he was From Kenya, they shared his first name with me and asked me if I knew him.

So let's see, Kenya's population is over 40 million people, the chances of me knowing someone just because they are from Kenya are very slim.

Going back to the tittle of my post, Africa is not a country, it's a Continent with many countries all together 54 countries with different governments, and different languages. Most west African countries and some central African Countries speak French as a result of being colonized by the French, and East African Countries like Kenya and Tanzania speak English as a result of being colonized by the British.

There some African countries that speak Portuguese, these include Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau as well as Equatorial Guinea.

Apart from these European Languages, which are taught in schools, there are many native Languages, for example in my country we have 43 tribes which means each tribe has it's own language, so the common language that joins us is Swahili.

This means if I meet someone From Kenya who doesn't speak Swahili or English, we can't communicate at all unless we use sign language.

Almost 12 hours Flight from Cairo to Cape Town

And also I would like to mention, just because I am an African, does not mean I have been to all countries in Africa, the flight From Nairobi to Lagos (Nigeria) is 5 hours 20 minutes direct flight, I have never been To Nigeria even though I would like to go there one day.

The Flight From Cairo(Egypt) to Cape Town(South Africa) is 11 hours 30 minutes direct Flight,

So what I am I trying to say? I am trying to show you that Africa is not a small place, and I would also want to add that we don't live on top of trees, and we don't live with wild animals either.

To be honest with you, I do take offense when someone expects me to know a friend they have, who they are not even sure which country in Africa they are from, I also take offense when someone acts surprised when they hear that I have been to school and that I speak 3 languages.

Just because I am an African, does not mean my brain is slow, the color of my skin or where I am from does not take away my abilities as a human being. I can learn anything, if I put my mind to it.

Africa is not a dark Continent, Africa is beautiful, is full of color, full of life. Africa is music Africa is fruitful. I think the western media paints such a horrible picture of Africa, they neglect to show the positive things that Africa offers to the world.

And no Africa is not a crime infested Continet, sure there is crime but then again there is crime all over the world, Africa is not a hot bed of terrorism, there ve been terror attacks in different places in the world but when it happens in Africa, its annouced how un safe it is to travel to Africa.

Why there are no travel advisories to France or other non African countries that have experienced terror attacks? Its only when a terror attack happens in Africa, within hours travel advisories are issued.

Africa has more to offer the world than poverty and diseases.

We don't just offer poverty and diseases, and famine did you know that Africa is the world largest producer of diamonds? Africa also has gold and many other precious stones, Africa gives the world beauty and sparkle.

In my country we grow coffee, we have tea and flowers that we export to Europe and to other Continents in the world, that is just one country in Africa, so think how many other things the world is getting from Africa.

The only thing that keeps Africa from reaching it's full potential, is corruption, and greed of few leaders who don't see the bigger picture, if things were run properly, Africa would not need financial help from World bank or European union or other organizations.

It's my hope and prayer that Africa will arise and realize how great she can be, and work toward achieving the prosperity and prestige of her people.

I also hope that people from other countries will visit African countries to see for themselves and learn our history and also see the beautiful sites that we have to offer, don't believe what you see on TV.

Yes we do have our struggles but, we do have our victories too. The world need to see both sides of the coin.

As much as the media wants to show our hardships and struggles, I think they should also make documentaries about beautiful places in Africa, beautiful beaches, magnificent mountains, majestic animals and beautiful birds as well as creativity of the African people.

Anyway, those are just some of my thoughts. I didn't think I would go that deep into things but, the more I wrote, the more I realized just how deep into things I was, if that make sense.

Thank you for your time.

Rose.

Hello Rose,

I think you're right in that people get the wrong idea and what we hear about Africa. I'm in the USA, when the news reports attacks or anything for that matter they refer to Africa like it's a country.

I never hear about the beautiful things, it's almost always about an attack, corrupt government or poverty and disease. I knew Africa is a continent, but I had no idea there's over 40 countries with over 40 million people.

I really enjoyed your post and it makes me want to learn more about Africa. I live in Florida and the most common news I get is about the hurricanes heading my way from the African coast.

Great Post, All The Best.
John

Hey John, thank you for your comment, the 40 million people is just one country, mine ( Kenya) the population of the whole of Africa is 1.2 billion people.

Yes, that was my mistake, I read that wrong I guess. But I will say with a population that size you would think the media here in the USA would report more often about the good things. The English speaking area's sound like great place's to visit, the other non english area's may be nice but I'm sure I would be lost in translation... ;)

I am Ugandan from Africa too, population of my country is about 42 million people. Honestly @Ropesa I love the effort you just put in to explain the beauty of Africa to the people on the other side, hilariously I think it can be a pretty good niche.
Personally I find it funny (in a cool way) when somebody (overseas) gambles with facts about Africa.

You can visit those places too, even though their official language is French, they have people who speak English too.

Like in my country, our Official languages are English and Swahili but we have many people who speak French, German, and if you go to the coast, there is a place called Malindi which has a big population of Italians, so most locals there speak Italian.

Also now a lot people are speaking Chinese too.

Hi Mugabi, yeah I tried. wow! you guys are 42 million? Kenya is doing census soon, so we will see if the population has increased.

Rose thank you for sharing this wonderful post. I am a smart, college educated person that knows several people that have visited Africa. I live in the United States.

Yet, it was only recently that someone here on Wealthy Affiliate made me realize that Africa is not a country. Is is a Continent.

WA has also taught me that there is a lot more to Africa than wild animals and a lot of people that live in horrible poverty. I knew about diamonds also.

Yet, your post has further made me realize how little I know about this part of the world.

Since Africa is a continent, some day I will have to sit down and decide which country in Africa that I would like to visit first.

Thank your for sharing this.

Hi Rose, enjoyed your post!

Yes. Africa is a continent and not a country. This erroneous believe is common in the west. Though I care less. But I noticed that there is no racial discrimination in WA.

The general media perception is flawed Rose. I know how you feel about the stereotypical perception in todays world. This should give you great inspiration and passion to educate those of us who do not know much about Africa.

I think some people just don't really know the difference between a country or a continent. No offense to them, but it's true.

The world thirst in your wealth of knowledge, I think you have plenty to write, or build a business around, just use your creative mind set and you'll be surprised at what you develop.

Thank you for sharing this with us, I hope to visit the mother land one day.

Hey Rose!
Great post! Thank you.
Not to hijack your post but while we are on the subject of Africa, might I add: Lesotho is not South Africa!
South Africa a great, big country that completely surrounds my country Lesotho (The tiny beautiful Kingdom in the sky)

Why I added that is because lots of people here in Uganda (where I currently live) ask me "where are you from?...Oh Lesotho, in South Africa?
I could go on and on...I need my own post for that!

Back to you Rose.
Thank you.

I know what you mean, I actually had an argument with someone about Lesotho, they kept telling me that Lesotho is in South Africa and I had to pull out a map from google to show them, that Lesotho is a separate country.

But because they had to win the argument, they said ''well, the country is on the Southern part of Africa anyway'' to what I answered, true but Lesotho is a country on its own, not a part of South Africa the country.

I don't blame you!
We share a lot of things
Lesotho is made up of 99.7% Basotho - meaning we are 1 big tribe. There are some other tribes in the southern part of the country.
In South Africa, you will find Basotho who speak my dialect, as a tribe. There are other Sotho dialects in SA.
I understand most South African Languages though I can't speak some fluently. (My parents were both South African! - Mother was a Zulu, father was a Mosotho)....

Absolutely, sometimes, to avoid long debates, I simply say yes in South Africa.
But not to someone who asked whether Lesotho is near Nigeria! LOL, I told her to please check the Map and see that Nigeria is in West Africa and Lesotho is down there in the South!

Oh don't get me started on the ones who ask if my country is close to Nigeria and if I can make fufu for them.

HAHAHAHAHAH!
It's so interesting how little people know about Africa including some Africans themselves.

I remember once, I told someone, that I am from Kenya, and then they said, oh yeah, that means you can make me fufu, and I was like aah no, that is a Nigerian dish, I just told you I am from Kenya, to which they answered yeah its the same thing, its Africa isn't it? and I said yeah but I am not Nigerian, then they said yeah potato poteto same thing.

WOW!

Ps: CuriosityStream is the name of the service where you can see a bunch of breathtaking documentaries about Africa for Free!

Thank you Ivan, I will check it out.

Rose you've nailed this! I was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and now I live in Saldanha, which is about 150kms out of Cape Town.

It is amazing the perception that people have of our continent and yes I have also experienced the same thing where if I say I am from South Africa they say Africa.

It is the same as saying that France is Europe.... not quite.

I've been asked if I have to hunt for my own supper and whether I live in a mud hut which is quite amusing.

I've never traveled to any other country in Africa but I would love to and I plan to at some stage when I have reached a certain point in my business.

Lol at hunting for your supper :) I think people need to learn more about Africa, and the African people.

By the way, I have been to Cape Town and i loved it there, I went to the table mountain and then I went to the place where the two oceans join, I don't remember the name, I think its called hope something.

Anyway, it was so beautiful there, I signed my name on the wall, I would like to go back and see if my name is still there.

Rose that is Cape Point where the two oceans meet - it is beautiful. I grew up in Noordhoek which is right in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town quite close to Cape Point.

I hope your name is still there!

Oh yes, Cape Point thank you.

I laughed so much @hunting for your supper @LynneHuy. I am surprised they didn't ask why you say you are African but are white.

The ignorance is mind-blowing to me. I never knew people were still this ignorant in this day and digital age, where you can find out anything just by clicking the send or search button. Crazy stuff mehn.

LOL well actually yes I have had some comments about being white in South Africa.

I’ve met some people from Nigeria a few moths ago. When I asked my friend about his native language he started to laugh and told me that in Nigeria there is 50+ different languages being used every day. I can’t wait to travel around the African Continent. It is a cradle of all of us people all around the world. Great post Rose, I like it a lot.

Hey Ivan - yes it is amazing to have so many languages. In South Africa we have 11 official languages - but we are not limited to those 11 languages.

WOW! 11 official languages? in Kenya we only have two Official languages, Swahili and English.

Hi Lynne, I heard a lot about your country from a former manager who was there on holidays. I can't wait to meet your people. Such a diversity yet it seems peaceful compared to EU where we fight every decade at least once.
