VidCon London 2019 was better than I expected!

In this post, I'm going to share with you 4 practical steps that I learned from VidCon that will help you to build your online business whether or not you are using videos.

I published a VidCon Review 2019 London video on my YouTube channel after the first day of the event which wasn't super-great (1st day was still good, not just great).

However, the days 2 and 3 were filled with amazing content from successful and smart people.

The event was not only great for people who want to build a YouTube channel but for building an online business and presence in general. My own YouTube channel is growing little by little and I'm thinking about creating at some point a course called, "How to create a living out of YouTube without ANY video skills?" Let me know if you'd be interested. It won't come out yet but in the future it would be possible.

Funny thing that I've noticed is that there are huge YouTubers who are leaving lots of money on the table. They may have even +200k subscribers and a potential to easily 10x their income by adding a relevant affiliate promotion / course but they're just focusing on a small revenue from AdSense.

Anyways, that would be a topic for another discussion...

Let's dive into the interesting stuff!

1. Always Think About Your Audience First

Let me ask you a quick question:

For whom are you creating your content? (whether it's an article, video, etc..)

For a Google bot?

For YouTube AI?

For yourself?

No. No. No.

You create your content for specific human beings that is your target audience. For example, I'm creating this piece of content for the people like you who are building their online business with affiliate marketing and I'm keeping that in mind.

Maybe your target person is a 50-year old man from the US (you can even name a specific state) who loves fast cars.

Then keep that person in mind when you're creating your content. What does he want to see? Most likely, he isn't very intersted in funny cat videos or childish memes in your blog. He'll more likely read about features of the latest Lamborghini.

That's of course a very simplified example but it brings the point that you MUST always think about the person who you are targeting with your content.

  1. What does he want to see/hear?
  2. What are their interests?
  3. What are they looking for?
  4. What do they love?
  5. Etc.

Let me give you a quick example from my own experience.

Previously I made a mistake in my MLM business opportunity reviews I usually used to say, "I'm not a big fan of the multi-level marketing." Then most people leave my review because that's usually the last thing they want to hear.

Carson gave me a tip in Vegas to rather approach it from a positive perspective and say something like, "I'm a fan of generating leads online." Then the audience is interested and wants to read further.

2. Niche is NOT a topic. It's a Group of People

(Note: If you're completely new here, you can watch this basic lesson on choosing a niche from Kyle.)

I always used to think that when I pick a niche, I pick a topic.

That's kinda true but it's also thinking that may easily lead to failures.

When the speaker in VidCon started teaching that niche is NOT a topic, it's a group of people I was thinking like, "What difference does it make?"

Well, it actually makes all the difference in the world.

This is related to the first point that I made, "Think about your audience first."

When you're thinking niche as a topic, it's just some "lifeless" thing that you pick and start talking/writing about. Like a researcher studying some shapeless object in the laboratory. Then you start thinking about which next "topic" should you cover.

This kind of thinking process takes all the vital human elements from your content.

When you rather think your niche as a group of people, you'll start thinking about them first instead of the topic. Now you approach your content from THEIR interset instead from YOUR interest.

Your audience is smart. You can't trick them. You must provide them real and valuable content that will genuinely help them to achieve their goals.

That mindshift will definitely lead to more success over time course.

3. Your EFFORT on Creating Great Content Pays Off

There are different strategies for the content creation.

Some people prefer putting out lots of content and others publish content more rarely but make sure it's extremely high quality stuff.

2 great examples are Grant Cardone and Brian Dean. They're total opposites in some ways.

Grant Cardone teaches that quantity is more important than quality and publishes TONS of content. 1,000's of Instagram posts, 1,000's of YouTube videos, 1,000,000's of emails, etc.

Of course, he has a large team that helps him to do that but the point is that he focuses a lot on QUANTITY and it works for him extremely well.

Brian Dean, on the other hand, publishes often like 1-2 videos/articles per month and that's it. But when he publishes new content, everyone knows that it's going to be awesome. People know that he has used endless hours to researching and creating the content as good as possible.

It works very well for him.

BUT, there's one common factor between Grant Cardone and Brian Dean. THEY ARE BOTH PUTTING TONS OF EFFORT ON CREATING THEIR CONTENT. And it pays off.

I remember when I got starteed on YouTube and I had 4 (super-low quality) videos on my channel. They got like 50 views in total and I thought, "Well, this YouTube thing doesn't work. I quit."

Then I didn't do YouTube for +1 year until I realized that I need to put more effort until I can start seeing any results.

Some months ago I met a successful YouTuber who had a principle, "Don't expect any significant results until you have published AT LEAST 100 videos." You may not need to take that quote literally but it gives you the point that you must give lots of effort before you can expect any significant results. The same rule applies to your blog/website.

Anyway, be sure to target the right keywords so your first 100 articles won't be just a waste like mine were lol

4. Investing Heavily In Your Business Pays Off

This point came as a result of my observations when analyzing other people's progress in VidCon who had achieved a great success.

I don't know about you but many people are afraid of spending money in their own learning or online businesses.

People might easily blow up $200 in the weekend for drinking, taxi, eating out and other stuff but won't invest $49/month for the Wealthy Affiliate premium membership that would help them to make a life-changing income online.

That's just one example... But let me give other examples that might help you to build your online business:

  1. Getting a faster laptop to improving your effectivity
  2. Buying training courses for learning a specific skill (for example, learning FB/IG/YouTube/email marketing)
  3. Outsourcing some basic tasks to another person who earns more than you do
  4. Better camera for your videos
  5. Spending more time/money on thumbnails
  6. Putting a bit more effort in your articles

If you don't have much money, your alternative is to invest more time.

Those investments are going to pay off big time when you take action.

When I analyze any highly successful person in VidCon (or anywhere else), they've always invested tons of time/money into doing that. Results don't come without any investments.

The ultimate goal when building a business is probably to get other people to do the things for you. At first, most of us invest lots of time and then we also start investing money into the business.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't just look for ways to blow up your money and time to any possible thing in your business. That doesn't take you anywhere. Think about the real improvements that you can focus on. Then start investing your time/money in them.

For example, don't invest into Facebook marketing training course just for the sake of it. Or don't buy a better camera just because you think it's magically somehow going to transform your online business.

Spend your time and money strategically.

Conclusion - Great Content => Great Results

(Got a selfie with a world-famous Derral Eves, hehe. If you want to grow on YouTube, follow him.)

Video creator guru Derral Eves said in his presentation something important in a brutally honest way,

"if you're not getting results on YouTube, it doesn't mean that YouTube algorithm sucks. It just means that your content sucks. If you want to get better results, you must improve your content."

Instead of complaining about YouTube or Google algorithm, your major focus must be on focusing on how you can better content for our audiences.

When you invest your time (and money perhaps) into creating better content for your audience, that will eventually pay off. You must always think about your audience's needs instead of your own needs when creating content.

Your success and your failure is on you.

Not on YouTube/Google algorithm.

Now I'd like to throw the ball to you.

Which one of the 4 thoughts mostly resonates with you?

What observations do you have regarding these 4 topics?

What points would you like to add?

I hope you've found this article valuable. If you did, smash the green "Like This" button.

Cheers

You have lots of great content here. I did an overview and will be returning to study the details in the evening.

I have a YouTube channel with only 13,000 subscribers and almost 8 million views. I do not make money because most of my videos are from concerts. The copyright is owned by others.

However by virtue of having over 10k subs YouTube has given me free access to a studio at their YouTube Space LA one day a month and the use of all the equipment I need. These include cameras, sound equipment, lighting, green screen, musical instruments, and all the supporting paraphanelia. I have yet to capitalize on this valuable resource.

Anyway I would be interested in your video making tutorials for newbies!

Cheers!

Edwin

Wow, sounds amazing Edwin!

Do all the YouTubers with +10k subs get an access to their studio space at LA for one day a month with all the equipment? Where can I find more information about it?

Hi Roope,

After you reach 10k subs the benefits get exciting. At the next level 100k subs, there are even more benefits. However, there is a process you need to go through to be granted these benefits that includes an online study course followed by a test. Once you do this you are invited to an orientation at the Space near you where you are given a seminar on the procedures and rules you have to follow. After you sign the acceptance agreement you are finally IN!

At the LA Space we can make all our bookings online. We each have a coordinator who works with us to make sure everything goes smoothly. You can take team members and guests as long as their names and Email addresses are given in advance so badges can be made.

The Space in LA also has a couple of screening rooms. I went and saw the premier of Love Simon there. I also experienced Greyson Chance launch his EP there. He had a Q&A at the end and I asked question s too. I have all that on my channel:

www.youtube.com/user/netzoomer

It is rather rough so be kind ha! All my videos were shot with either my iPhone or still camera in a rather unprofessional way. But heck, I captured the moments that the fans loved. They couldn't get these full concert videos from the artists.

There are YouTube Studios in 11 cities in the world. https://www.youtube.com/yt/space/

Here is the link to the LA one that I use. https://www.youtube.com/yt/space/losangeles/

Besides use of the facilities, YouTube Creators can attend exclusive shows and events held at these places. Any artist who is prominent in YouTube can give concerts there only accessible to the Creators for free, with food included.
What is your YouTube Channel?

I have so many more videos that I have yet to post on mine.
If you ever visit LA let me know and I can set up a visit and a tour there.

Cheers!

Edwin

Great info and not just regulated to videos. I can see a lot of this that applies to written content. Love the comparison between quantity and quality. Thanks for this.

Yeah, I wrote this to be applicable for written content as well because I know that most people here focus on that.

Thanks for all the great information. I love your idea about making a living out of Youtube. Thanks again, Deanna

Thanks Deanna!

Great information. Many thanks.
'Niche is not a topic, but a group of people' helps me to remember to write for those people that I want to help.
Cheers

Yeah it really helps!

Amazing content Roope. Thank you. I love the party about reinvesting in your business.

What's the next event your going to?

Thanks Chris!

Next one is Passion For Success in Helsinki, Finland after 5 weeks https://events.uskallainnostua.fi/passion-for-success/

There will be Tony Robbins' main man Joseph McClendon also teaching and Finnish entrepreneurs.

We love following you and your global adventures. Your enthusiasm is contagious! Looks like VidCon was a lot of fun. We love London. We both lived there for many years and in fact, we met there.
Great post and it really hits home with us because we are going to be starting a YouTube channel shortly. We are moving soon (to another country again) so not sure if we will start immediately or wait till we move, but we are learning all we can in the meantime.
We would be very interested in viewing any videos you make about YouTube.
We really liked what you wrote about seeing your niche as the people in it and NOT a topic. This is so true.
Keep that energy flowing!
Colette and Philip

Thank you very much for sharing Colette and Philip!

Well, if you want to get started with YouTube, you can just get a webcam like Logitech C922 and Blue Snowball mic. I'm using those.

However, my plan is to buy more equipment when I settle down again for more months.

Thanks, Roope, I (Colette) used to do voice and on-camera work in commercials professionally so we already have a pretty decent microphone, a Blue Yeti.
We were planning to use our DSLR camera for video. Do we assume you would not recommend using the video cam built into our laptop? Also, for screen capture, we are planning to use either ScreenFlow or Camtasia.
Do you have any particular recommendation for this?
Many thanks,
C & P

Wow, you have amazing background for YouTube then! I believe that you know more about technical video stuff much more than I know. Yeah, DSLR camera would definitely be better than a webcam.

Well, I've just used Screencast-O-matic because it was so easy but I've tried Camtasia also and it was great. More advanced.

Thank you very much!
Have a great week.

Awesome post, Robert. A must-read for all online-entrepreneurs.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful knowledge.

Cheers
Akshay

Thanks Akshay!

This sounds really interesting, at this stage, for me it also sounds overwhelming but....,,,,,,,"Would the topic "How to make a living out of YouTube without ANY video skills?" be something interesting or do you have other ideas. I'd love to hear from you so you can leave a comment below or send me a message" …,,,,,,,,,..It would be great to learn. Mike

Thanks for the feedback Mike!

Roope, I learn so much from your posts. I am not even going to to narrow down which of the four tips resonates the most.

You are doing an awesome job of demonstrating how/why attending conferences can be so beneficial.

Yes, yes, yes....I am very interested in the topic of creating videos without any video skill.

I do appreciate your observation about that those who focus on long, high super quality posts can be just as successful as those who are focusing on quantity. I"m hoping that my posts are going to be falling into the first category. I certainly do not qualify for quantity on my personal websites.

I really hope, no strike that out. I plan to meet you in Vegas next year. You inspire me, teach me and motivate me all at the same time. Thanks!

Thank you very much Sondra! I really appreciate your encouraging words. Would live to meet you in Vegas next year!

I haven’t ventured into video yet, but I’ve been doing Instagram Lives, and planning to do starting adding video to my blog posts, at least occasionally. I found your post very helpful...especially the straightforward advice that you always need to be thinking about your audience, and who your content is for.

I would be interested in a YouTube training program, if you decide to put one together.

Thank you for the great information!

Brooke

Thank you for sharing Brooke! Instagram Lives is already video content! ;)
