In this blog post I will...

  1. Share with you some "behind the scenes" data.
  2. Draw my conclusions based on that data.
  3. Ask your opinions about this so that we can discuss about this in the comments section

As I explained in my previous blog posts, switching from publishing 3 YouTube videos per week to publishing one new video every day (=7 YouTube videos per week) skyrocketed the views on my channel.

Now we might assume that if we take this further to publish 10 videos per week, that would skyrocket the views even further, right?

Maybe, maybe not.

What Happens After Publishing a YouTube Video?

I wanna share with you 3 graphs from 3 different videos:

The graph above shows the number of views for a new video...

As you can see, it's pretty high during the first hour but once I published a new video within 12 hours after that, the views dropped dramatically.

Instead of watching this video, people go to watch the newest one.

I've tried this several times.

Below is a graph from another video.

As you can see, right after publishing the video gets the most views. Then the views seem to stay consistent hour after hour...

But immediately when I publish a new video, views for this video drop A LOT. In this case, as you can see in the graph, the time between publishing these 2 videos was around 24 hours.

Below is the third example from another video:

This graph shows the accumulated views in total instead of views per hour.

1 and 2 represent days. So, I published a new video almost exactly 24 hours after publishing a new video.

As you can see, views were rising fast for this video but right after I published a new video, new viewers didn't watch this video so much anymore.

How Can You Use This Information?

First of all, I would love to hear YOUR thoughts in the comments below so I encourage you to join the discussion below. Together we can learn more from this data and you can share your insights based on your own experiences.

1. If you publish 7 videos per week, publish them on separate days

One might think, "If I have 7 videos ready for publishing, wouldn't it be the best just publish them right away so that people can immediately find them on YouTube." That may sound logical but based on this data, it may not be the best approach.

Most likely it will lead to a huge spike in your views within that one day when you publish all those 7 videos but then a huge drop in the next day.

I have had days when I have published 2-3 videos and on those days, I've got a spike in views. But in the next days, the views have always dropped.

2. If you publish 3-4 videos per week, publish one video every other day

If you are going to publish 3 videos per week a good plan may be:

  • 1 video for Monday
  • 1 video for Wednesday
  • 1 video for Friday

By doing that, you can get the maximum rewards for each video instead of experiencing that sudden drop of views one day after publishing.

More Than 1 Video Per Day?

Now the question would be...

If you want to maximize your channel's growth, what is the optimal strategy?

If you have good suggestions for that, I'd love to hear from you in the comments.

I've seen several big channels (more than 1 million subscribers) publishing sometimes 2 videos in a day but based on my experiments so far it hasn't provided significantly better results than 1 video per day. Maybe I'll need to experiment that more...

Also, I haven't had strict times for publishing. For example, I may have published at any time of the day. Perhaps it would be better to publish during a specific time each day so subscribers could better prepare for that..

What do you think?

More Than 1 Channel for the Same Topic

Some YouTubers have created several YouTube channels even though they talk more or less about the same topic on all of those channels.

Before I've never really understood why they are doing that... But maybe that's done for maximizing the overall growth and influence?

I'd love to hear your opinions and insights on this topic in the comments below!

PS. If there's anything unclear with the graphs that I showed, feel free to ask me also that.

There are ways as I understand to combat some drop off such as running weekly topic series where a viewer has to see all videos to get them to the same final summary. Best when used in 3-4 posts a week this tactic can give the high viewer retention and yield more repeat visitor traffic.

Example:
Mon. Brain farts What Are they?
Tues. Brain Farts the Cause Of Them?
Wed. Brain farts the ultimate Solution.

At the end of Monday offer a Tuesday Preview or Topic teaser. Same on Wednesday for Friday. Plan a longer and more in-depth video every Friday and invite the viewer to tune into Monday's show.

this sounds a sound approach

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
I don't have the experience to help except as a viewer. If I'm subscribed to a channel I'll usually watch the latest only if I've missed a few, unless one of the previous videos has an especially standout title I want to watch. Maybe YouTube also recommends your latest video more. Looking forward to learning more from you and massive congrats on your success :)

Hi Roope,

You present an intriguing metric to dwell on, Since you have built a reputation on YouTube with your large library of videos your case may be different to someone new and just starting a pattern of posting videos.

This begs the question, would you have been better off not posting a video everyday but about three a week? I feel you answered that question. It would be better because each video would receive more viewers just after being posted.

I wonder if this same phenomena applies to blog posts.

Cheers.

Edwin

Hi. For me it was very informative this post. I am goibg to start a channel soon, so iam not an expert at all in rhis area. But i have heard from someone expert for a while ago, that is a good thing to check from wich country the pelple are, thats looking on your videos, so you can ” peak” the best time to post your videos. Whats your channelname? I was thinking for me to start i want or need to post every day for 30 days, so the algoritm is finding me, and people off cource!😅God luck with your success! Hugs from Ingela E

Does the same philosopy apply to Tic Roc? I recently purchased a software called VideoTik. It lets you make, edit, schedule and publist short videos to Tic Tic and to Instagram. As soon as I get better at the program ( I just bought it a couple of days ago) the plan was to make around 10 videos a day and schedule them to be published at staggered times from 1 hour to an hour and 12 minutes and so forth. I have heard that Tic Toc doesn't like auto publishing.

10 a day!!! Quite the film star are we?

Based on my observations, larger channels on TikTok usually have more content so I assume that publishing a lot there will most likely lead to growth
