Argh, Don't do THIS! ;)

Last Update: May 02, 2019

This post is just a quick reminder so the same doesn't happen to you that just happened to me! :D

I just spent 40 minutes recording 2 YouTube videos to my channel.

After that I noticed that during that whole time my microphone was OFF and only the laptop's mic was recording that has a completely awful sound quality.

Before recording I quickly checked the microphone and I was like, "Yeah, there's some sound. Should be working!" But I didn't bother to check which mic it is.

So, please, don't do the same mistake! Always remember to DOUBLE-CHECK that the right mic is recording when you are doing YouTube videos.

Another "mistake" that I made before a couple of times was that I had written a text and I was supposed to copy-paste it to another place on my computer.

Instead of pushing CTRL + C (=copy), I pushed CTRL + X (=cut). Then I got distracted and copied also some other text.

When I was about to paste the original text, it had disappeared into the cyber-space and I had lost it.

Howver, after repeating the same mistake probably 3-5 times, I think I have finally learned that it's better to use CTRL + C instead of CTRL + X always when copying the text.

Very simple things, of course, but you don't want to waste 30 minutes writing something and then losing the text.

Also, a good way to avoid losing any text is to always type in some cloud like Google Docs, Wealthy Affiliate or Wordpress that auto-saves it.

If you are not connected to the Internet and you have written a long text, you can save it to 2 places so if you accidenatelly delete the other one, at least the other one remains (Again, I speak from experience of losing a text when I saved it only in 1 place and deleted it accidenatelly, LOL!)

That's all for today. Just a quick reminder. :)

Would be fun to hear from you.

Have you ever lost some text / video / other work? How?

=> How do you prevent that it doesn't happen again?

Let us know in the comments below!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers

Roope "Don't lose your work" Kiuttu

The same thing happened to me two days ago! I recorded a 1-hour video and realized I didn't have my mic on when I went back to listen to it. That can be so frustrating, but it's a part of the process.

Now, I check the mic much better to make sure it's on. Haha. For most of my writing, I use SiteContent and Google docs on occasions.

Great tips. The small things (like turning the mic on) count because they can save you lots of time.

Hi Roope, I agree it is better to use a system for producing and saving your work. I use Site Content on WA which autosaves my work as I go. it is all in one place should i ever need to refer to it again. Thanks for the reminder, Alan

I do a bit of drone flying to get footage for my travel blog and youtube channel.

I have lost count of the number of times I have landed after a great flight getting some fantastic footage...only to realize I never pressed the record button!

This causes me to swear an awful lot!

I feel your pain Roope, was working on a landing page the other day, which I thought was getting to the "bee's knees " stage, someone was asking me some questions, one eye on them and one eye on the work.

Not sure what happened, clicked the wrong something, messed it up completely.

Straight to trash.

That moment of inattention can be painful.

Ctrl Z can be a good friend, for retrieving work.

Thanks for the reminder.

I have Sticky Notes on my taskbar so when I copy text I know I'm going to need later I pop one up and slap it down.

With Sticky Notes, it autosaves, so even if you lose power or some other cyber-tragedy, it will be there when you get back.

Great tips on the mic. I have been considering doing a video, and I will keep that in mind. My laptop mic is cruddy too but the one on my headset rocks.

Maybe you can set your "good" mic as the default hardware for voice recordings? I think that's the way I have mine set up for DIscord, gaming, and Skype.

I have lost text many times. I save in addition to the autosave feature. Call me OCD, but I really dislike it when I have spent time writing something and it disappears!

I found out the hard way to copy not cut, also. I was working with a huge block of text at work one day. I cut it from the file to paste it to another and my computer froze. I had to restart and the text was gone!!! Yikes!

We learn our lessons, I guess...sometimes the hard way.

Best wishes,
Karin 😁

Hey Roope, this is great on your part on leaving us this quick, but helpful reminder on what to do so that we can avoid losing our progress.

I love the fact that I can work inside WA's interactive platform, and able to use it's tools and features that we all enjoy; and I even get to work in the back office of each website I currently have, and I do so directly from my smartphone!

I couldn't tell you how many times WA's cloud storage has saved my butt on more than many occasions when I would just assume I had lost some progress because I had accidentally pressed the back button one more time!

I must say that I also have to thank you for giving me an idea: on finding a way to be able to work offline should I be faced in a situation where signal strength isn't necessarily in my favor!

Thanks alot, and enjoy your journey as you should!

Ahhh yes - my 30 yrs in IT have seen many of these issues. I won't go into detail, but let's just say I HAVE thrown a PC out my two story window once! My answer, have a quiet, uncluttered environment to work in and try to avoid distractions. VERY easy to say and pretty much impossible if you have kids. We live and learn eh? Great to meet you.

Wow, thrown the PC out of the window. I thought it only happens in movies :D

I had a gamer friend who used to threaten to go after his PC with a sledgehammer.
I think he finally did it because he was offline for almost a week before his wife logged in from her laptop and told us he was buying a new computer that day :P

OMG Roope, the same thing happened to me the first time I wrote my first blog, it was so frustrating. I learned my lesson and now I type out the draft in MS Word and save it before I make any edits. Every couple of times I make a few edits, I do Ctrl-S to save the file once I've named it. Now, I just copy and paste it when needed. Thank you also for the info regarding the microphone. Getting ready to do my first couple of videos and I will remember your advice. Hope you are well. 😊

That's good! :) Even better is probably Google Docs because it saves the text automatically time after time.

Great words of advice! I’ve actually had both of those things happen to me too! Very frustrating ... Now I use Google Dics for my draft... then I have a backup. LOL

Excellent points that any of us could make if we could only admit it to others on WA as you just did.

We feel for you, Roope, but we are sure most of your readers will have experienced something similar on more than one occasion. Autosave is a real boon.

Yep! After I repeated the same mistake a couple of times, I was like, "Hmmm... There must be a way to avoid making this same mistake again!" Lol

I remember writing a long piece of text and then there was an electricity blackout. And Office complained about how it cannot recover file. Cool!

Ouch! That's why I'd always recommend wrtiting in a cloud online that saves the text automatically.

Great ideas and advice that is so sad when it bleeps. It happens to me sometimes too but I do not know all the command prompts via touch screen as there are no control buttons, so I just hold down for the menu. I still have done that on touch screen and made me want to screech like your model in the picture. It is frustrating losing your work. My Lilah helped me make a screamcast on it. Lol!! Good words of advice. I thank you very much.
Kind Regards,
Nurse Becca
