I have had people tell me that you need 4 to 500 words of content on your pages, posts, and blogs. To much filler is boring and unneccessary.
Google, and the bots love it when your word count is above 500. Kyle says between 500-1000 is key.
I agree with Michelle - it's best for SEO purposes.
I have been trying for 800-1200 words lately.
Hi. It is better to not think so much about the exact word count and write until you have covered your subject thoroughly. I agree with you that filler is not a good idea and I think it can actually hurt your page rank.
However, when you're looking at how your content will rank in the SERP's, higher word counts usually give a greater result in traffic. The more quality content you have, the more that gets indexed. So, the more indexed content, the better your post will do in the searches.
It is about how Google will assess your site, so it is not the matter of filtering. I think I have seen Matt Cutts saying that the minimum should not be below 300, this is for their bots when they crawl your post. I think it is easy to get above this.

Thank to all of you that responded to my question about the amount of words in a post or page. I will try hard to have engaging and well thought out content and reach the 500 to 1000 words.
