Why Do You Want To Work Online From Home?

Hello Folks

I created a new site and a variation of this blog is what I'm going to put as my 'About Me' page. You can leave a comment below to tell me what you think and perhaps why you started your journey to financial independence.

To everyone who wants to get into Working At Home and earning an income from the internet I ask one particular question - When Do You Or When Did You Used Do Your Best Work?

Are you a night owl or do you like jumping out of bed at the crack of dawn?

For most of my working life the evenings were the time I read, watched television and socialized. Reading a book sometimes took me into the early morning hours. The books were novels, self help and business. I was consuming and learning but not creating.

When I discovered Social Media sites it was fun to see the other side of the world wake up while I was contemplating sleep. But the immediacy of those site conversations when there were only a few of us sending each other messages was intoxicating, exciting and compelling.

Then the ‘Blog’ arrived on the scene and I jumped in with both feet. I hit the publish button for the first time and countless times thereafter.

Creating posts back then was still part of my late night habit. After a good night out and sharing a beer or two with some friends there were still some tasks to do. The blog post still had to be written, polished and shared. That was a struggle.

Distraction, diversion and tiredness were a constant battle in my new writing pursuit.

Then something changed - there was a random event

One very early morning I needed to drop my daughter off to catch a train. I had some time on my hands and I was awake and a big part of the world was still asleep. So I sat down and wrote. The phones weren’t ringing and the quietness was welcome. I had muted the social media networks and the email was ignored.

I discovered something

Mornings were distraction free and precious. It was my time and there was no one to intrude.

I had discovered that old habits can be changed and that new discoveries were possible. Despite being on the wrong side of 50, the night owl had become the early bird.

Another revelation or two

Creating, publishing and sharing in that distraction free zone was invigorating. I wrote blog posts before my day job. It meant getting up at 4.30 am and wrestling content into a shape that I was proud enough to share. At 9.00 am it was 9 to 5 time.

I was living in two parallel universes. The day job, and the passion project.

The day job was fun at times and rewarding. But it was an investment in other people’s dreams (I was a trainer in computer systems for a local government department where I lived). I knew the 5 day working week routine would stretch into years. But in “my time” I was creating a personal investment that was building a digital house one brick at a time. It was incremental but so satisfying that it soon distracted me from my employer’s goals for me. We came to a mutual understanding and I took early retirement.

passion project

That passion project involved writing one article a day 5 days a week for a couple of years. It was on topics that tickled my fancy you might say and also touched my natural curiosity. I really did love to write, and putting one word after the other was also producing a body of work.

One step at a time produces an epic journey that can leave a dent in the universe - Who Said That? I don't know but I felt I would someday make a difference with my writing.

After 1,000+ blog posts and over 1 million words later the passion project was a serious online investment and asset. That bootstrapped passion project became my life and my work.

investments

Those one word investments had added up to something much greater. Stephen King was once asked how he wrote.

One word at a time,” and the answer is invariably dismissed. But that is all it is. It sounds too simple to be true, but consider the Great Wall of China: one stone at a time. That’s all. One stone at a time“.

The artist creates a masterpiece one brush stroke after the other.

We are all artists and creators but some don’t know it.

Investing in yourself

We all have to make a living.

Paying the bills, putting food on the table and caring for the family, and it usually means working for somebody else. But if that is all you do…reach 55/60/65, get the gold watch and buy those nice slippers, you may feel cheated, that you gave the best years of your life to the corporation.

What little is left to show that is just you.

This modern digital world has opened up global opportunities to create, publish and share. You need to take those innate abilities and passions and find that intersection and start the journey of creating. Sharing on the world wide web will allow you to get feedback in real time.

You will discover that your online efforts will change others and they will change you. It becomes a collaborative creation.

But you will need to set aside the time to invest in you.

That may mean getting up early.

Find the time

It doesn’t matter if you are a late nighter or early riser. The reality is that a dedicated slice of the day that is just yours can turn into a great money maker, a legacy, yes and a life that may surprise you.

Do you want that possibility or are you happy to settle for the life you have today?

If you just make a start you will be surprised by what that will produce in terms of motivation, self-worth and also the impact creation will have on your long term future.

How is your current time commitment to invest in yourself going?

Are you dedicating a couple of hours a day?

Are you brave enough to leave a legacy that is just you?

However much you have to do during the day or night you must set aside some ‘Me’ time to do what it is that motivates you to achieve everything you want to.

With me its writing, and I don’t really care all that much what I write about as long as I can put it down and share it and by doing so I can help others along the way to achieving their goals. You must keep in mind they are goals and not dreams. Dreaming wont put money into your bank account, and that’s a simple statement of fact!

We are all here at Wealthy Affiliate because we want to somehow change our lives, and hopefully for the better. We have set ourselves goals. We want to achieve.

Wasn’t it Confucius that said – every journey begins with a single step – take your first step on your journey to a more financially rewarding future today.

I’ve been a wee bit philosophical with this semi-bio. But I hope that at the very least it has made you stop and think and ponder. Think and ponder what road you are going to take to achieve all that you want to now that you believe you have or have nearly reached the end of your present one.

Have a great day.

Hi Robert,

What a great post. I haven't been very active for almost a week now because my daughter got sick. So I need to do a lot of catching up. Love your articles. It inspires and motivates me. I know my effort will pay off in the long run. Thanks a lot.

Kind regards,
Arline

Hi Arline and thank you for reading my rather long blog.
I hope your daughter is now on the road to recovery and you can get back to your business.
It doesn't do to neglect it for too long.
To your eventual success.
Robert

Thanks Robert, I will do my best. There's also a lot to do in the house but of course I have to do the most important ones first.

Have a nice day.
Arline

That me time Robert, and you are not answerable to anyone.

Hello Lanu and thank you for your comment.
yes you have to set aside some me time.
It doesn't matter if you don't get much done but what you do accomplish is worth the time you spent doing it.
Have a great Monday and the rest of the week.
Robert

I have also stood up for a long period of time. And used the extra time in the morning to write.
I'm also happy for my new job. Getting out and being a part of everyday life. I have been trying to work on my pages for a full time period but I'm not quite ready for it yet.
But I write every day in the morning and in my lunch break.
(Eat while I work)

Hello Steen and thank you for your input.
You must find your 'Me' time Steen.
It doesn't have to be a few hours but at least an hour or two that you set aside so you can lay the foundation and build your business.
One brick at a time is ok.
Once in place you are ready to move on to laying the next brick and brick by brick you WILL achieve what you set out to do.
Have a great Saturday.
Robert

Robert another great post and It would take me quite a long while to read through all your training.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my blog.
Glad you liked it and perhaps some day I will be reading about your own journey.

As for my other blogs - just pick out the ones you believe will help you now and the rest can wait.

Have a great Friday and the weekend to come.
Robert

I enjoyed reading your personal blog and I'm sure many would relate to it. I had no idea I would end up starting an online business until I became involved in WA. It is very satisfying working from the comfort of home and being able to work at one's own pace. This is such a new area for me so working at my own pace is important for me.
Carol

Hello Carol with the bright new eyes.
Hope you are not straining them too much.
Glad you enjoyed my blog.
Seems like a long time ago when I first started but its actually only been 10 years.

Keep up the good work with your own home biz and you will get there eventually.
Take care and have a great weekend.
Robert

I like it. I think a lot of people will relate to it...including me. The flexibility of working at home is my main reason for doing it. Good luck with your new site.
Debbie

Hello Debbie and glad you like my ramblings lol.
It has been a long road and bumpy at times but I got there in the end.
Now I could easily sit back and live the life I have always wanted but as that poem by Omar Kyayyam -

“The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.”

I personally don't regret one word I have written and I like to believe that I have helped others with my writing.

After all that was my intention when I started out.

Have a glorious day Debbie.
Robert

Lots of wisdom Robert in your latest post. A million words - my oh my! You have made a lot of difference, you are still making a difference, and you will make a difference long past the time you decide to do something else...Mission accomplished! Cheers! Dave : )

Mission accomplished Dave - I well remember when I thought it would be mission impossible lol
But I got there in the end and I can tell you it was one hell of a ride and very bumpy in places lol.
I hope your journey is easier and if its not then at least you did it your way and that's all that matters.
have a great Thursday and thank you for your kind words.
Robert

Hi! Robert Alan,
A real great statement of life facts! If one wants to succeed, s/he has to know what, where, and how to effectively use personal limited life capital, that is, time + personal spiritual and physical energy, ability, and capacity that are cultivated and accumulated over lifetime. So, I am with you, and will follow you as the model of success nowadays in online digital world. Thanks.
