Looking Back To My First Year With A Home Based Business

Hi Folks

Almost every day I see new members asking how long could they expect it to take to start making money from their home business.

They also ask about why this happened or what do they do because of this, that or the other. But the main one was that first question - How Long?

For reasons that escape me now, I kept a diary of sorts during my first full year of working at a home based business. It was nothing close to being a complete daily diary, but more a collection of scribbles about things that I felt were worthy of note at the time. Since quite a few years have passed since then, I decided to revisit these notes. (I'm one of those people who keeps everything just in case its ever needed)

In no particular order, here are some of the things that I had made note of.

Choosing the path...in the beginning, my enthusiasm was very high (perhaps too high?) and I was chasing off on several different home-based business opportunities at the same time and not focusing my efforts enough to be successful at any single one of them. I finally reigned myself in and focused on a single work at home business opportunity.

In other notes I find reference to emotional and/or psychological issues that I experienced and are probably typical for most people when starting a home based business. When working at home a person can, at times, experience a feeling of isolation which is probably brought on by the lack of interaction of a work force environment.

There were also periods of doubt in the early days...did I pick a viable business opportunity?...am I doing the right things to develop my business?...when will I start making a profit?, and so on.

Many of the entries in my so-called diary had to do with the proverbial "two steps forward and one step backward" thing and the ever-looming temptation to become discouraged. Although I didn't appreciate it at the time, it is now obvious that as long as you have more steps forward than backward you will eventually get ahead! Isn't hindsight wonderful?

Other entries reflect the fact that relatively minor events can seem huge in the early stages of developing a work at home business and can really contribute to an emotional roller coaster ride. For example, if you are just starting out and you have two customers/clients and you lose one...that's a 50% drop! However, if you fast-forward in time to the point where you have dozens or even hundreds of customers/clients and you lose one...that's just a mere fraction of 1%! Same event, just at a different point in time.

Looking back on it now, some of the stuff I recorded now seems quite funny, but I'm pretty sure that was not the case at the time I made the those notes.

And so to all you people who join, and in no time at all you are wondering why you are here and all those other 'Whys' that cross your mind in the first few days or weeks. Its all part and parcel of giving up your old way of life and starting a new and hopefully better one as a person with your own business, and your own financial independence.

Could the reason you are here be one of these reasons?

  1. You want to be your own boss
  2. You want to make more money
  3. You have a great idea to make a lot of money
  4. You are fed up with your 9 to 5
  5. You lost your job

Most of all though you probably want a better life for yourself and/or for your family.

If there's anyone who would like to tell us about their own struggle with self doubt and their own 'Why' they are here then by all means leave a comment below.

Have a great weekend folks, and be successful.

Robert Allan

Robert

Hi Robert,
During the brief time, I was involved with the MLM racket, I lost 12 out of 14 clients. This particular business was too costly for the clients as most MLM's are.

When we started with this company it seemed pretty good and it really is, we didn't know how to work it probably.

But coming to Wealthy Affiliate was a much better fit.

Thanks for sharing.

Bill

Hi Bill
Thank you for stopping by and for your comment.
We have all had our disappointments Bill and we must pick ourselves up and keep on going.
There is light at the end of the tunnel.
It just seems like a pinpoint just now but it will become bigger as you progress.
What can I say but onwards and upwards.
Enjoy your Sunday and the week ahead.
Robert

Thanks, Robert for the encouragement.

Bill

No probs Bill, have a great Tuesday.
Robert

Of course, on the other hand, you could ask why not start your own home based business?

Derek

Hello Derek, thank you for reading my blog.
There are many options to work at home Derek and at the end of the day its down to you what you decide would be your best option.
Have a good one.
Robert

Excellent post, well stated. I think we have all been there. Thanks for sharing, Deanna

Hi Deanna and thank you for dropping by.
Always happy to pass on my thoughts as well as my tips and advice.
Have a great Sunday when it dawns for you.
Robert

Very nice Robert. I really like the pic of the girl standing on the tree with all the branches. My gosh I can so relate to it. Too often I am standing on the root and I see all these branches in front of me, and it becomes so hard to pick the right branch. Sometimes when there are so many many paths, I pray I take the right one. You are a good man my friend. Thank you.

Hi Michael and thank you for reading and for your input.
I think most, if not everyone will have the problem of choosing the right path.
Hopefully the one we choose is the right one and if not then you just have to start again.
Lots of help for you here though so the chances are good that the path you choose will be the right one.
After that its onwards and upwards and never look back.
Enjoy your Sunday Michael.

Nice poem Robert. It is good to see you.

This post is so right on and very encouraging.

I have to say I don't fall into any of those categories. I want to conquer the world of Affiliate Marketing and I want to reach the world with my poetry. I will never conquer but to strive for it will help me grow and I can help more people the more I know.

When I found WA I knew I had found a gold mine. It is a wealth of information and support. And thank you for your support.

Laura

Hi Laura, and how are you this fine Sunday morning, well I hope and doing ok on your own personal path to online success.

C'mon now Laura you surely have had doubts, misgivings and perhaps felt you were on a roller coaster now and again.

That's ok, and as long as you are a survivor you will be able to move on with positive thoughts and achieve the success you want.

Have an awesome Sunday when it dawns for you.
Robert

Robert, of course I have. I think I misunderstood your question. Have a great day.

Laura

No probs Laura, maybe you had a 'Senior' moment lol
I have them all the time lol
Take care.
Robert

LOL, I have so many senior moments in a day I have lost track.

Later
Laura

Only joking Laura, you're much too young to have a Senior moment.

I on the other hand am not over the hill but certainly at the top looking down the other side lol.

Now its time I was off this machine.
Catch you again.
Robert

HA HA. Robert. I am much older than you think but not going to broadcast it. I wonder if we are looking down the same mountain.

I just had to get the last word. LOL

LAURA

You're as young or as old as you feel Laura and right now on this nice Monday morning I'm 21 again.
Wonder how long that will last lol.
Hope you had a good one.
Robert

Thanks Robert. I really like you poem. Thanks for sharing your early thoughts. You proberly forgot one. I have x number of posts and my results are low. Should I change my niche? Thanks again.

Hi Glenys, thank you for reading.
If your niche is the one you thought you knew most about then no I would not change it.
However if it was one you chose because you were influenced into choosing it and you don't have a lot of knowledge or experience with it then yes I would.
This is simply because its always best to go with something you do have knowledge and experience of so you can write about it with authority.
People who come to your site would recognize that authority and you would build up a following.
Enjoy your Sunday and the week to come.
Robert

Fabulous advice as always.

Had a looksee at your profile Glenys and your sites.

Perhaps you should follow the path of self-improvement and build a site around that instead of affiliate marketing.

What about your other site about Honey.
Are you making any money from that one?

Also you have been here well over a year and not to have reasonable results in this time scale is unusual so my advice is to change your Niche to Something you have a passion for rather than go down the usual road of following the herd.

Take Care.
Robert

Thanks Robert. I appreciate you taking the time to review my sites.
I get a few coins off my honey site per month. Its very neglected. I am not going to continue with it. That special honey can sell for $300 per kilo....yes x1 kilo only. So with profits like that fakes are everywhere.
I dont want to educate an entire industy, so I am out.

My bootcamp site has been bothering me. Thanks for looking at that one.
I am just shy of 100 posts and just shy of 1000 comments.

Taffic is between 200-300 visits per month.
My results are X5 starter referrals and zero actual sales.
Hmmmm thats a lot of work for zero income. ....and its actually a quality site.

I have been thinking that it might be time to cut my loses and start something new.
Thanks for taking a look. I appreciate that.

Hi Again Glenys
Will send you a PM later.
Enjoy your Tuesday.
Robert

To learn in the first place...
Great expose!

Yes indeed Fleeky.
Thank you for stopping by and hope you are having an awesome Saturday.
Robert

Loved the end card, can I name it as card? As always a great post.
Thank you Robert :)

You name it whatever you want to Maria.
Thank you for reading.
Hope your Saturday is going as well as you want it to.
Robert
