Is Long Form Content Part Of Your Marketing Strategy?

Hi Folks

I read a blog by Rob (boomergp08) where he mentions long form content so I thought I would elaborate on it to give you some idea what you must do to achieve success.

Long form content is not just about writing more words. You must also remember that long form is only as good a marketing strategy as its execution. So, here, and in my own opinion are the steps you need to follow to get it right.

1. Define what you want to achieve

Every endeavour starts with a ‘why.’ Before you start writing content that will provide value for your target audience, your purpose for doing so must be clear. Are you doing it to increase engagement rates? Maybe you’re writing content to inform your readers of a function of a product in your niche.

Whether you’re after a high rank to create a stronger brand awareness, or to be established as a leader in your niche, this purpose will help you determine your plan of action. In addition, you’ll be able to foresee if your content writing plan will succeed or fail.

You need to know exactly:

  • Who you’re writing the article for
  • Why you’re choosing long-form content
  • What success would look like when you achieve it
  • How to measure that success when it comes

2. Decide what topic you’re going to write about

When you know why you’re writing the content and what it’s for, finding the right topic shouldn’t be overly tricky. Of course, you need a topic that appeals to your audience, answers their needs, and encourages them to take a certain action by the end.

You can do your research through keywords, or through exploring other types of content on the internet.

Forums

Yahoo Answers and Quora are great places to find topics. These are sites that let users ask questions and other users answer them.

For any of the two, just type your keyword into the site’s search box and trawl through the conversations and lists of questions. You’re sure to find one that’s interesting and worth expanding on.

Social Media Groups

Joining social media groups is very much like joining a Community. You'll find people there who you can get help from, and offer help in return. Questions are asked, and problems are discussed.

In response, you can write an entire article around someone’s concern and provide a solution to their problem.

3. Write and write some more

You could probably get off easy on the research in short content. But there's no such thing in writing detailed posts. Adequate research is needed to pull off a relevant and incredibly useful long-form article.

It doesn’t matter if you're an expert or not, you still need to do your research to make sure you cover all the important bases. Other things to remember include:

  • Write a compelling headline: No matter how great the body of the text is, if readers can’t get past the headline, your efforts fall flat. So make your headlines just as good as the rest of your long-form content. Research, experiment, and track the headlines that generate the most traffic. And above all, let your industry knowledge and expertise guide you down the right path to perfect headline creation.
  • Storytelling: Telling stories makes the world go round. In every conversation you’re in (online or offline), you’re telling stories and trading it with others. So even if you’re busy presenting cold hard facts, don’t neglect the importance of partnering with a compelling story. Your target audience would be more likely to relate and engage with long-form articles that are creative.
  • Use simple words and explanations: If anything can be expressed in one word or a short phrase, then do it that way. One surefire way of getting people to turn away from your work is to include any kind of jargon with your posts. Remember not everyone has the same knowledge as you do. You want to inform, but use plain English.
  • Write for SEO: Break up paragraphs into two or three sentences per line. Use subheadings to make it easily skimmable for a lot of people. And use bullet points and numbered lists.
  • No self-promotion: Tooting your own horn blatantly in your article is bad taste. If you do, make sure to do it sparingly. There's no harm in including links that lead to your other works for further info though.

4. Promote

How to promote your long-form content

  • Via email: Email is nowhere near dead. It’s just as effective as ever. Like your content, you need to make your email messages as attractive as ever to draw people’s attention. Write compelling subject lines and make the body of the message just as irresistible.
  • Promote on social media: Your followers need to see your content. And they can’t do that if you don’t give it to them or show them. So, use these free networks.

Whether you’re a struggling newbie or a self taught expert everyone can do well with producing long-form content.

If you aren’t doing it yet, you’re missing out on some incredible benefits. As long as you do your research thoroughly, come up with an article that has a great headline and great visuals, you will see significant benefits from your efforts.

There you have it folks and I hope you will take something away from my opinion.

Have a great day and be successful.

I’m sure you’re right. You know so much more about this stuff than I do, and you’ve obviously done your research. So much of what you say makes great sense. But some of it feels wrong to me

I’ve been doing a lot of comments and feedback in WA lately. I’ve got to say when I’m presented with a really long post, I sigh, grit my teeth, and proceed like it’s a chore. I so much prefer short and to the point. Maybe I’m just odd. It has been mentioned.

You say write simply. Use “one word or a short phrase”. Great advice, but I’m having trouble squaring it with the need to double the length of my average post.

You say I need to know who I’m writing for. More and more I’m feeling like the implied right answer to that question is, “I’m writing to impress the GoogleBots, so they’ll raise my ranking and I’ll get more hits.”

I am suspecting that what Google wants is not the same as what my target reader wants. I’m am assuming that my target reader is like me and wants what I want.

To me, that’s the paradox. I write overly long pieces so the GoogleBots will move me up to page one of the search. That way more people will see my site and click on it.

But when they then get to my site, I’m thinking they want something that is crisp, informative, entertaining and no longer than it needs to be. No ones looking for a Russian novel.

So, those are my thoughts on the matter. Your comments would be appreciated. I hope this letter hasn’t gone on too long, but if it has, well, that’s kinda my point.

And if it isn’t too long, I guess that kinda proves your point. Hmmm

Hello Jim and thank you for your rather long comment but I appreciate your input.

As I said to Alex - I have to admit I still submit short articles now and again and they still achieve a decent rank.

This is simply because I believe I have said all I can and the information is pertinent to the subject matter so why waffle on about it just to fill up the page?

But even if the users don't or wont read all the way to the end of a 2, 3, or 4 thousand word article its what the search engines prefer.

A good way to get people to at least get to the end of an article is to have great sub-headlines all the way down the page that explains exactly what that section is about.

That way if people aren't interested in those parts of the article they simply skim past them and stop at the parts they are interested in.

Enjoy your day Jim.
Sorry my reply isn't as long as your comment lol.
Robert

Now that’s a great idea: interesting sub-headings. Even if people don’t intend to read to the end of a long article they will probably scroll down. If it is full of eye-catching bold-printed provocative sub-headings, maybe they’ll slow down. See, I was right. You ARE better at this than me. (Incidentally, I didn’t say you were wrong, just that it felt wrong.)

Another thought that occurred to me was calls to action early on. I notice that on Kyle’s product review, he has an affiliate link on line 3.
Thanks again for taking the time to help bring the rest of us up to speed. It’s people like you that really make WA worth the price.

Just kidding.

No probs Jim and everyone is entitled to their opinion and good or bad it makes for interesting reading.
Hope your Thursday is going well for you.

Nice article Robert. You have done a great job summarizing what needs to be done to create engaging work. I was researching this the other day and yes longer articles are definitely the norm now.
I will bookmark this as a blueprint.

Alex

Thank you for reading Alex.

Have a good day.
Robert

I agree waffling is not advantageous to anything. Most people can spot it and do not appreciate it. If I think someone is padding their article I will click away.

Alex

I do the same Alex.
I do however like to make my opening paragraph the bait to hook the reader.
Works every time.
Robert

Yes, sir, You have to have the bait to set the hook.

It is the bait and switch we must avoid, the loss of focus in the delivery. A well-crafted post should flow well, be easily readable and hold our attention.

Something I would say you have mastered.

I like to believe I have David but I still learn something every day.
Enjoy your Friday.
Robert

Good post Robert. Where did you get this last bar graphic on Avg Content Length? Who was the publisher?

Hi Kaju, thank you for dropping by.
That bar graphic is by serpIQ and By Simon Dalley

Its a very good indicator what the search engines are looking for.

Have a good one Kaju.
Robert

Spot on as usual Robert!
Thanks for the enlightening post.
Hope you’re doing well!
KyleAnn

No probs KyleAnn and thank you for taking the time to read.
I am doing ok and taking it easy.
You have a great Thursday when it dawns.
Robert

Hello Robert,
I can not argue with the facts shown on the graph of average content length vs rank position.Your presentation is very clear and compelling. However, how do you deal with the low attention span of most website visitors.I read someplace that is a good strategy to have one core article in your website, your 2500 words, and follow in short sequence with 5 or 10 short "satellite" articles ,each dealing with a specific aspect of the main subject and only 500 words.I have been trying to do that and include links in the short articles to the main core article. Is this a valid strategy ?
I respect your knowledge and the quality of your posts, but as a beginner in this art, I am still trying to find out what works for me.
Your comments would be greatly appreciated.
Carlos

I would say that is quite a good strategy Carlos.
I myself publish short articles on a regular basis and have no trouble achieving a good rank.
Its all in the presentation of information.
If its presented in the right way people will read so your strategy has merit.

Onwards and upwards.
Robert

Great post. Thank you for not only stating your position, but giving ideas on how to go about accomplishing writing content- ie - forums - social media etc.

Thank you for dropping by Debbie.
No harm in spreading the word around as many places as you can think of, but Forums, Message Boards and SM are good places to start.

Onwards and upwards.
Robert

Always informative & interesting as usual.

I’m hearing more & more these days that the old “1000 word post” concept just isn’t enough to get good leverage in Google anymore.

Time to focus on longer, high quality content

Thanks Robert

Yes indeed Simon so get writing those longer articles and I['m sure you will see a difference in your ranking.
have a great Thursday.
Robert

Thank you Robert for sharing this valuable lesson on long form content much appreciated

Jennifer

Always happy to help Jennifer so hope you took something away from the blog that will aid you.
Have a good one.
Robert

Yes Robert I had a lot to take away.

It also confirmed that I was on the right path.

Have a great day

Jennifer

Great stuff Jennifer.
Have an awesome Sunday.
Robert

Thank you Robert

Jennifer

Hi Alan,

Another bullet well fired.
Kudos to you.

For sure, having the audience at the back of our minds is crucial when writting, because at the end of day, we are not writing to patronise ourselves.

There is also the place of research. Not just keyword research. Researching the topic. There is no one that is a compendium of knowledge. There will always be something to learn from others.

Plenty thanks Alan.

Segun

Thank you for your kind word Segun
Yes indeed you must always remember you are writing for people.
You give them what they want and you wont go far wrong.
Thank you for reading and hope you're having a great Wednesday.
Robert

Thank Alan.

Poor me still on the 9-5. Praying and hoping that soon there will be a breakthrough in my affiliate marketing business and I can take an early retirement before I clock 60 in the few years.

Hope you are having a great day also.

Thank you.

Segun

Great post on long-form content, Robert.

I am currently working on another pillar page for my website. Several of the planned sub-topics will also be long-form to make sure I cover the subject thoroughly.

Hi Glen, thank you for reading.
You must give the link when your page is published.
I intentionally made this blog short on images because its the content of the blog that's important without any distractions.
I believe I covered the subject so hope whoever reads it will go away with a clearer understanding that content is till king and the longer the better.
have a good one Glen.
Now its about time I was off this machine as its getting late.
Robert
