Meta Tags - What They're For And How To Use Them

Hi Folks

I have published more than one blog on the subject but it seems the newer members are still somewhat confused about the Meta Tags, how to use them and what they are actually for.

First of all the Meta tags are really the foundation of any website when it comes to search engine optimization. Its one of the first things that they will look at when trying to determine what any given page is about.

This being so its really important that you optimize all your Meta Tags to the best of your ability with your target keywords in place.

The Meta Tags I will explain about in this blog will be; Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, Header Tags and Image ALT Tags.

Title Tags: Your Title Tags hold the most weight in the eyes of Google and should contain your most important keyword phrases. These are seen in the search results as the blue clickable hyperlink when you perform a certain search query. It always best practice to try and keep these close to 70 characters in length.

Meta Descriptions: MetaDescriptions show up underneath the Title Tags in the search results and are the short snippet of text that describes what that web page is about. Every page or blog post on your website should contain a unique Meta Description that is compelling and encourages people to click-through. Try to keep these as close to 160 characters in length as possible.

Header Tags: Headers (H1 up to H6) are the only meta tags that actually show up directly on the website. These are generally the main heading that is above an area of text on a webpage. Header tags also hold a lot of SEO weight and should be optimized with your most important keyword in place.

Image ALT Tags: When you upload an image to your website, you are able to insert a keyword Image ALT Tag to it. This allows for additional optimization and should be added to every image on your website.

Ok folks there you go. I know the blog is short and sweet but its not rocket science so these short explanations will have to suffice.

Onwards and upwards and be successful.

Thank you for this information Robert. One question, H-1 is used for the title of the post, correct? I do not know why exactly, but I have gotten into the habit of using H-4 headers for everything. Would it be better SEO wise to use H-2 as my very first subheading, followed by H-3 and stop using H-4 so much? Thank you

Hello Colleen, thank you for reading.
yes use the H2 for your first Sub-heading and even the 3rd and 4th if they are great secondary keywords/keyword phrase.

Title Tag - H1
Sub-Heading - H2

Thereafter H3

I wouldn't use the H4, H5, H6 as they are more or less redundant these days.

Enjoy your Tuesday.
Robert

Thank you, Robert! It looks like I might have a lot of work to do!

It will be worth it Colleen.
Enjoy your Wednesday.

Robert, should I Fetch as Google after editing each post or is that too much? Thank you for your help.

Once you have finished making all your corrections then you can request an index for your whole site.

The New Fetch/Index In Google Console Remember to put your Website URL into the box and not anything else then the search engines will crawl all of your site.

Much better doing this than every single posts you have.
Robert

No probs Michael and thank you for taking the time to read.
Hope your Wednesday is going well.
Robert

Hey Robert, thank you for the explanation and I did all you said but one and I got better rankings.

I went back and change all my keywords in my images and just give my image a description that make sense. What is your take on that? Thank you for sharing.

Hello David and thank you for stopping by.
A good keyword in the Alt Tag is great and absolutely no harm in adding a good secondary keyword in the description box.
I do it all the time and it will help with your SEO.
Onwards and upwards.
Robert

Robert,
Good share - I already redid all mine ::))
Susan

Hello Susan
Thank you for dropping by.
Good to know you're on the ball.
Get it done once though and you wont need to go back again.

Robert

Thanks for the explanation. Very helpful.

Question - For image ALT tags: can I go back and add keyword to the image even if it has already been uploaded to the website?

You sure can just go to the image in your gallery and click edit.

Thank you 👍

Hi Frank
Yes go ahead and add a keyword.
You are only updating and that's quite acceptable.
Thank you for reading.
Robert

Hi Geoff, thank you for helping Frank.
Appreciate all who help out if and when they can.
Have a good one.
Robert

Thanks Robert. Very helpful post as always.

Hello Amy
Thank you for reading and your comment.
The question I have for you is of course - are you using all your Meta Tags to their fullest optimization?
You get stuck, you read some more of my blogs on this subject.
Enjoy your day Amy.
Robert

Robert, my recent posts were all following these SEO strategies, but the older ones I have to go back to check them.
Thanks again.
Have a good day.
Amy

Ok Amy
Always best to check them out just in case.
Those little tweaks can sometimes work wonders for your ranking position.
Robert

Hi Robert, thanks for sharing the useful information. I probably should go back and check all of my meta tags

Hello Sondra, first to read an comment.
Its all there for the newer members to read and follow the advice.
I winder how many will actually do so though.
If they don't they will come a cropper with the search engines.
But you wont Sondra because you're going to check.
Hope you don't have too many posts to check though.
Best to get it right and right first time.
Enjoy your Wednesday.
Robert

It's mainly the older posts that I have to check. As is, I am already going through them to re-purpose and update. So, I am able to do multiple things at one time.

Even though I've been around a bit, I still like to re-consider the basics....

Okey Dokey Sondra.
I'm sure you will manage just fine.
You get stuck, you get in touch.
Robert
