Keyphrase Selection For Search Engine Optimization SEO

Hi Folks. Had a private message from a fellow member asking me to look at their brand new website. They asked me if I thought they were using good keywords in their first couple of posts. They thought they had, but they were only getting a trickle of traffic and couldn't understand it.

Leaving aside that it was a new site I couldn't actually find it or their posts with the keywords they were using. This was down to the simple fact that they were irrelevant to the niche and niche product. What a waste of time and effort they had put in creating the site and writing those posts.

Choosing your primary keywords is usually the most difficult part of good SEO practice. It is however one of the most important. When you start to customize your website for search engines, you will need to select one main keyword or keyword expression, and four to half a dozen secondary keywords.

Your secondary keywords can be a little bit more versatile than your primary keyword or keyword phrase. A keyword phrase is usually referred to as a Longtail Keyword and proven to generate the most traffic.

The primary keywords are going to be essential down the line. You should not just use them for a single page on your website. Instead, they should feature prominently on each page of your website, in any website related blogs, in any website related newsletters and in any PPC campaigns. Understand that SEO will go beyond simply a website.

With that in mind, look for keywords that will stand long use. Don't use keywords that are very general; you want targeted keywords for targeted traffic. But don't go to the alternative extreme; a keyword is not a good one if it's something so specific that no-one would ever search for it.

Find the words people are most likely to work with as a search term when they're looking for your product or information. You should preferably have between four and six secondary keywords, but if necessary, pick as many as ten. Above ten keywords you are diluting the value of any of your keywords.

Find a mix of general and specific secondary keywords. Better yet, make one or two of them key phrases, such as "home based work making money from surveys" that blends the particulars of the seven words with the generalness of each individual word.

Once you have your keywords, don't limit them to just your website. Use your primary keyword phrase each and every time you link to your website, in articles, blogs, newsletters, and in RSS feeds. Don't overlook relevant forum signatures! The right keywords, used in the right way, can be invaluable.
