Best Keywords For SEO

Hi Folks

A member ask me a question this morning about why their website posts were not ranking very high in the SERPs. Could it be the keywords they had used?

My first thoughts were to inform them that while a great keyword will give you a high ranking position in the Listings this does not guarantee it will stay there. Why not I hear you ask?

This is simply because what was a great keyword last month does not mean it will be so this month or next. This is because peoples search terms change day by day, week by week and month by month. This being so you should update your keywords on a regular basis to keep up with this trend.

On the other hand you can have keywords that will stand the test of time. These are keywords that are really pretty generic as search terms but very popular just the same.

However choosing your primary keywords is one of the most difficult parts of good SEO. Its also, however, one of the most important.

I have always found that when I begin optimizing my website or an individual post for search engines I will choose one primary keyword or keyword phrase for my tags. I will also choose about a half dozen secondary keywords. These secondary keywords are the ones that are going to be important in the long term. You won't just use them for a single page on your website. Instead, they should feature prominently on each page of your website, in your blog, in a newsletter if you have one and in your RSS feed as well. SEO goes beyond just a website.

With that in mind, look for keywords that will stand the test of time. Avoid keywords that are too general. Remember you want targeted keywords for targeted traffic. But don't go to the opposite extreme. A keyword is not any good to you if it's something so specific that no one would ever use it as a search term.

Your secondary keywords can be a little more flexible than your primary keyword. Pick words you believe people are most likely to use when searching for your product or information. (what would be your own search term for the product you're promoting or selling)

You should ideally have between four and six secondary keywords, but if necessary, pick as many as ten. Don't go above ten, because then you will most probably dilute the importance of any of your keywords.

Look for a blend of general and specific keywords. Better yet, make one or two of them longtail keywords that blend the specifics of perhaps 3, 4 or 5 words together with the generalness of each individual word. Once you have your keywords, don't limit them to just your website. Use your primary keyword phrase every time you link to your website. The right keywords, used in the right way, can be invaluable.

Ok folks, there you have it. I have published several blogs on keywords and how to use them so its worth your while to have a browse through them as well. This blog is based on my own keyword strategy and it works for me - what's your strategy, does it work for you?

Meantime if anyone has any other keyword tips and advice then please share them with the membership through a comment below.

Have a great week and be successful.

Hi Trevor and glad you took the time to read the blog and hope you went away with some info that will help you with your own keyword strategy.

Great tips Robert. Thanks for sharing. I did recently notice a change in keyword #s. That’s a valid point. An increase in searches for your keywords over time will more likely to bring you consistent traffic. A decline in searches, self explanatory.

To confirm, my keyword strategy is learn everything I can about keywords research and application. It's hard to deny the importance of understanding keyword research and seeing opportunities to work smarter, not harder.

Hello again Kim.
If you keep your eye on the changes through your Google Console you can keep ahead.
Some keywords do stand the test of time but the majority are mere whims of the users, here today and gone tomorrow.
Enjoy your Sunday.
Robert

Yes indeed Kim, its always best to be smart.
Did you read my blog on LSI keywords as well.

If not here's the link - Enjoy your day.

Hello Mick and thank you for taking the time to read the blog.
Seems like you're on the right track and I agree Google will find keywords within your posts over time but first you must find the right ones to use.
Poor keywords wont bring home the bacon.
Onwards and Upwards.
Have a great week.

Hello Connie and thank you for reading my blog.

have a great Sunday.
Robert

Thank you for this post. It is really important to be ranked by Search Engines.

My question is if you are ranked this time will you be changing your keywords after a quarter or six months?

Hello Jimmy and thank you for reading the blog and for the comment.
I usually check up on my keywords with Google Console to see how they are doing.
If the visitor count is falling then I will change them.
This will usually be after a month but sometimes within 2/3 weeks.

You must keep abreast of trends Jimmy.
No point in just set and forget coz keywords and their popularity do change.
Have a great Sunday.
Robert

Oh my lord! I thought a keyword is for all those target people around the world. So if there's a million and I got five hundred thousand in a year I'll be having another five hundred thousand for the next year.
I would like to have those generic keywords you mentioned so I need not change every time.

Finding generic keywords is easy enough Jimmy.
You just have to browse a few sites and see what keywords seem to be used the most often.

Examples for home business -

Work from home
Work at home
Earn money internet
Internet income

Same old same oh but they do generate interest.

Have a good one.
Robert

Thanks, Robert.

Another informative post. I especially like the "Benefits of Targeting Long-Tailed Keywords" image. Good explanation!
Thanks, Robert.
