Are You Using HTTPs Protection

Hi Folks

I have published a similar blog to this some time ago but after a question asked of me today and there are a lot of new members since then I have decided to reiterate what I said in that other blog.

You may or may not know but way back in 2014, Google made HTTPS encryption for URLs a ranking signal. HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) is basically a website security certificate known as the SSL (Secure Socket Layer certificate).

This means that any kind of data breach is very difficult and the sharing of data almost impossible. HTTPS makes a website trusted by Google. Its very important for ecommerce and banking websites especially when more people are making online transactions.

Its also believed that https enabled sites get a boost in search engine rankings, but its still important for on-page SEO, especially since Chrome puts a “not secure” mark on non-HTTPS sites. Seeing this 'not secure' mark could alarm many of your visitors, who could end up leaving soon after landing on your site. This will increase your bounce rate, affecting your search ranking, and of course your income.

Hope all who read this blog take heed and get your Site(s) protected asap.

If you have your own domain hosted within Wealthy Affiliate then this function is free. All you have to do is activate it in your Account Settings.

The function is not free for free SiteRubix sites hosted by WA and therefore you will have to protect your site by buying an SSL Certificate.

Have a great day folks and be successful.

Many thanks Robert.
You are right, we are so lucky to have SSL readily available at WA. who would not want to install it?!? :)

Hi Chrissie and how have you been doing down there in England somewhere? (is it Leicester or Lincoln, I forget)
Anyway I hope you're well I hope and going great guns with your business.
Yes indeed, free SSL is just one of the great freebies we have here at WA.
Pity it isn't available for the free sites though.
Thank you for stopping by and have a great day today.
Robert

Hello Wayne and thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment.

If you mean within WA you have to activate the SSL Function.

There's good info if you follow the links as well.
Have a great Tuesday.
Robert

Thanks Robert

Wayne

No probs Wayne, and onwards and ever upwards.
Robert

Very good information, thank you! I have checked and my SSL settings are "On." I do not recall if I set them this way, or if they were pre-set.

So, is the SSL setting what you are referring to? If so, do members need to check these settings just to ensure that they are set on the "On" setting? I mean, is it possible that when you created a new site that they setting is turned in the "Off" mode?

Thanks!
Cathy

I'm nearly certain the default setting for SSL on WA created sites is set to "off" (no SSL protection). Users must go into site settings and set to "on".

I've just recently installed new site and I'm 99% sure I had to turn this to on within the site settings area. One can always check too by loading the site in question into browser and if the URL begins with the https:// then site is secured with SSL (vs http://....not secure).

Cheers,
Dennis

Thank you, Dennis! : ) Just wanted to be sure and thought the answer would help others who are new (and not aware) of this.

Regards,
Cathy

Hello Cathy and thank you for reading my blog and for your input via the comment.

You actually have to activate the SSL function and no its not set automatically for every new site.
You have to do it yourself.
Have a great Tuesday and be safe.
Robert

Thank you, Robert! : )

Be safe as well, and many blessings to you!

Cathy

Yes indeed dena, keep your site safe and yourself as well.

Seems this was of value to some. We (tech people) just take this stuff for granted since we have been dealing with it for years.
Good post, Robert.

Hello Steven and thank you for reading and commenting.
The highest percentage of the new members wont know about it this so that's why I am more or less repeating what i said in my other blog.
Hopefully it will get read by newbies and the info passed on.
