Bad Backlink Anchor Text Will Affect Ranking

Hi Folks

One of the most often questions I get asked by new members after they have started adding content to their sites is will backlink anchor text affect their posts rankings in search engine results. My answer - you bet it does. Therefore its important to understand what anchor text can do for your posts, so read on folks.

How To Define Backlink Anchor Text

Anchor text is made up of the words you see highlighted on a web page that link back to another website or a different page within that same website. The target link is the actual web address, and the anchor text is the word or phrase visible to the web page reader.

The words you choose to use as your anchor text are important, because search engines will evaluate how those words reflect the linked page. For this reason, it’s important to ensure your backlink anchor text is both relevant and useful in relation to the page to which you’re linking. Make Sense?

There are six types of anchor text you can use:

Exact Match, Naked Link, Partial Match, Branded, Generic and Images

What is the Best Anchor Text to Use

In general the ideal backlink anchor text will serve two purposes.

First, it must be relevant to the topic of the page it links to. This doesn’t mean you have to use the keyword phrase from that page, but it does mean that “click here” or “visit this page” just will not be good enough.

Example - If you’re linking to a page that sells extra large underpants for men, your backlink anchor text should indicate that this is what that page is about.

Secondly, the anchor text should make visitors want to click that link. When the anchor text isn’t inspiring users to visit that link, it’s going to affect how the page is ranked in search engine results. For that reason, it’s just as important to make the anchor text interesting as it is to make it relevant and useful. A lot of web pages fell by the wayside after the Google Penguin update. Don't make the same mistake as they did.
