Am I An Expert Now - When Did This Happen
Have I Turned Into A Guru?
Hi Folks
The other day I helped a new member out as I do most days and their reaction was - "Wow, you must be a real expert, are you what's called a Guru"?
I had to ask myself - Does over 10 years of internet marketing, falling for scams, starting up businesses, being fairly successful, make me a 'Guru'?
I have now been marketing online for around 12 years, I have tried every money making scheme going....gifting and pyramid schemes when I first started looking for ways to make money online. There were also investment programs (lost a lot of money), got paid from taking surveys (a lot of work for a few lousy dollars), multi-level marketing programs, affiliate programs, you name it, I've tried it!
And along the way I've learnt a thing or two about marketing, recruiting, building downlines, making money online and most certainly losing money online...but does that make me a Guru? Am I now an expert in online marketing and home-based business and you should do as I say? Well I would certainly think about it first because I don't don't consider myself an expert or any such Guru.
But I have my own websites, I have achieved a certain degree of success. I run a couple of blogs, I know a thing or two about marketing both on and offline. I also write articles on the subject of internet marketing and home-based business and so on...
I have also read about many so called experts with 4, 5 or 6 years experience of internet marketing...they have written ebooks and courses about the subject, some even hold conferences and training calls about it but are they really experts? I have read many ebooks written by these experts and more often than not they teach me nothing new.
I do not consider myself an expert or an internet marketing Guru. I do have plenty of experience and I have acquired a lot of knowledge over the years which I'm more than willing to pass on. But I am still learning...I still search out good ebooks to read, search out new marketing techniques to master and so on...we should all be learning all the time. We should never sit back and think we are now an expert on something. Pass on your knowledge to others but keep learning....
Only the other day I spoke to someone I have known online on and off for years. I was surprised to hear they thought I was some 'Heavy Hitter', some internet marketing guru.
When I explained I was just someone working hard to earn a living online like they were and certainly was no expert, they were amazed and it immediately gave them a boost to build their own business. They had thought they could not really succeed, that they did not have the skills needed etc. Then they find out I am just plugging away as they are and all of a sudden they think they can achieve success also...and they will.
My advice to you is this - When you are next offered advice by an Internet Guru. Do they really know more than you do? Check them out and you might be surprised that they indeed know very little that you can use.
That's all folks, except let me ask you one question.
Do you consider you have learned all you can or need to because you have finally, and after many months here at wealthy affiliate started to make money online?
I say No, and you must keep onwards and upwards to more success and you wont do that resting on your laurels.

Hi Robert. Great blog. You certainly help many of us newbies to internet marketing. In this industry it is difficult to know what an expert is because so many people can make themselves sound like experts without actually being one. Often in the 'outside' world politicians are good at this. They will discuss a topic without actually ever giving an answer. I have, on occassions ,noticed that same technique being utilised here at WA. Fortunately it's not to difficult to work out who the true experts or Guru's are. You, my friend are definitely one . Jim

Great post Robert. People call me an expert at work, but no I am not. I'm just like they would be if they were there for 25 years like me. So, I agree whole-heartedly on what you say here. I am just an hourly employee there and here I am just another one plugging away like you.
