Exact Match Domain Names - A Followup

If you have read my previous blog post entitled The Myth Of Exact Match Domain Names then you will know that Google does not give much link value or rank value now to having an EMD. But there can still be some advantage in certain types of EMD.

Take my website holistictreatments.life . Google looks on the site name as your 'brand' and as such would expect references to your brand to occur quite frequently within your website. By having a suitable choice of domain name you avoid the issue of 'keyword stuffing' which Google now frowns on.

I can use many keywords related to holistic treatments and Google won't get too upset by that now as it would expect that to happen in the normal course of writing my content.

Just some more thoughts for you to consider as you move forward with developing out your website.

That's really helpful, I have been searching around regarding just how useful a domain name is to the search engine. Brilliant, Thanks

I guess that makes a lot of sense RJScot. Thanks for sharing :-)

and very good thoughts indeed all the best Max

Good knowledge. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting discussion.

Google does grant some ranking power to the exact match version of a domain for that particular keyword though, especially if you own the .com version of the domain.

.life or any of the new gTLD domains that have surfaced in the last couple of years are unproven and I am yet to see a domain like this rank well under anything.

Always aim for a .com domain if possible, exact match still has some weight in the rankings, it has to in particular if you own the .com as Google has to assume you are the brand owner.

Ex. WealthyAffiliate.com

Google has to assume that the brand owner of the keyword, "wealthy affiliate" owns the .com, thus ranking the .com near or at the very top of the search results.

I typically recommend going for brandable domains before keyword rich domains, but there still is some weighting there.

Thanks Kyle for your input - always welcome. In this case the .com (and the .co.uk) versions have been bought up for resale at stupid prices. In this instance the .life extension seemed very suitable for the topic of my site. It will be interesting to see what Google makes of all the new extensions coming out. They can't ignore all non-dotcom sites for ever (Or can they being Google?)
