Captcha and comments

Do you really need the captcha plugin? Granted, no one likes spam. And if you're a webmaster you can get very irritated with it. You see a notification that you have a new comment. You get excited. You check it out, and it turns out to be spam.

The captcha plugin is there to stop the bots and spiders that are bringing the evil comments (spam). However, the captcha plugin might also stop real people as well.

Personally, whenever I am confronted with the captcha to fill in, I pause and reconsider if I really want to go on and engage with a comment. It is much easier and more inviting if you remove this from your site. Making it easier for others to comment may mean increased engagement.

But what about the spam? Most of you already have Akismet running. That should take care of it. Give it a try. If it doesn't do enough, you can always go back and add the captcha again.

If you've had any experience removing or adding the captcha, go ahead and sound off below!

Hi,

yesterday I had 10 comments on my website, they were all spam, and sent by the same person. Marking them as spam though is not enough, it still allows the same user to resubmit their "comments". Today, I got 8 (6 of the same user and 2 of a different email address) All 18 of them came from Asia. What does Akismet do? I also hate, really hate captcha, so I don't want to use it unless I really have to. How does Akismet work?

Hi, you may want to read below discussion

Akismet monitors incoming spam and filters it out from comments and contact forms. It's another product from the creator of WordPress.

Hey Rick nice post!

I'm curious how much more spam I would actually get without the captcha, I may try it and see.

ROCK ON!
