To Niche or Not to Niche...

...that is the quest...literally! Finding a niche sometimes seems exhausting and you begin to second guess the skills and abilities you have. Me? I have limited crafty or gardening or mechanical skills. My computer and electronic knowledge is limited so I cannot speak intelligently of those things (although no guarantees because I am good at "make-believe").

So what shall my niche be? Is it suggested in the title? Who wrote "To be or not to be"? Shakespeare? I am creative and can come up with many intriguing thoughts and scenarios. I can write and direct plays...children's theatre was especially fun!

But how shall I use these? Who shall I direct my niche at? How can I monetize the spirals that are my thoughts? This I will say: I am enjoying this and discovering myself further as I cast about for that elusive niche. It is a journey! It is an adventure! And I'm wise enough to recognize it and ponder upon it.

Oh, and how do you pronounce "niche"...nitch?...neesh? Maybe that's irrelevant. Maybe the important thing is to find it? Hmmm...To niche/nitch/neesh or not to niche/nitch/neesh...tis a question (and say it 5 times fast!)

Thanks. Are you thinking a new topic? I am intending to narrow the children's theater idea down as, on it's own, it's too broad and generated a lot of pages on Google.

Rick, I think you need to try different strategy for this one to come up for a better niche

Hey Rick I'm with Rich on this one, as I understand it absolutely any niche will do, the more you know about it the better, but it s also possible learn more about it as you're building your site.. it's gonna happen anyway, just by blogging about something you'll learn more about it so don't agonise about it.

Oh and yeah the nitch/neesh thing, in the states I think they say nitch and in the UK we say neesh!

In the UK we say Neesh just so you know, unless you're Scottish in which case no idea.

It is not spelled "nitch" so why pronounce it like that. Any country that institutes proper English will pronounce is "neesh". Just like every other term like this (ex. cliche). Also, roof is pronounced the same as "goof", not "ruff".

It's nitch. You are right, it is such an adventure and lots of fun. Just thinking about it gets your creative juices flowing. Do what you are passionate about. Thanks for sharing!

Rich said it all. Most important thing to do is keep moving forward. :)

Hey Rick.

I don't recommend agonising over a niche. Your first is unlikely to be your last. I went through three in as many weeks when I first started. The quest for the "perfect" niche is a total waste of time. It's much better to learn the process then: Rinse. Repeat.

You say you enjoyed children's theatre, so why not start off with that? It's easy to monetize; costumes, props. etc. You can provide your own short scripts (sign up, get a free script), do short ebooks on "how to...", offer a listing service of both amateur and professional performances (pantomimes, etc.), news and reviews, get user engagement by offering to "publish" photos of their kids performances, etc. etc.

There's plenty of decent keywords out there for this, for example: http://d.pr/i/fHvq You can then add promotional content for "seasonal" performances, Christmas plays, Halloween plays, etc. I'm sure that Patty (@fiindingemo), The Demon Queen herself (@veronica.l) and Diva B. (@BIS) can offer plenty of advice on sourcing newt eyes and frog toes so you can create your own "products" for the latter.

Good luck!

Rich.

ps. It's neesh, "nits" are head lice. :P

Thanks Rich. I appreciate the comments and advice. Children's theater is something I am passionate about and have a few one-act plays I've written. Your comments brought some other things into focus as well. I gotta say, WA is a great piece to be!

So did some research with Jaaxy. Would the following be good numbers:

Keywords: children's theater stories
Monthly Searches:128
Estimated Traffic: 22
QSR: 3
SEO Power: 81

Didn't know how to do the link to the screen shot.

Yes. You should also bear in mind that every post and page within your site can use different keyword(s) and you can rank for those as well as the combined site as a whole. You can then use the same keywords used in a post or page in articles on SA, Ezine, Squidoo, etc and link back to that page or post on your site to drive traffic to it. Rich.

Rick maybe a little mental reverse engineering is in order. Ask yourself why you are here? Why did you want to learn these skills? Growth come with pain. You are willing to take the pain of learning to avoid the pain of what? whatever the answer, don't be embarrassed and accept that.
These terms like "pick a niche", "choose what you like" etc etc are all very valid nice and flowery. Get to the meat of things, get to the root of why you are spending time here as opposed to somewhere else (family, friends, activities or even he pub) .
Once you know what you want, you get your eyes on target, then put on blinders and don't get distracted, there are too many shiny new trinkets to explore. Burn your boats buddy and go for it.

Thank you. I agree with your comment about the shiny things. I bug my teens about it all the time but don't usually stop and see what has distracted me. Thanks

Your niche does not have to be something you are skilled in. It can be something you are interested in learning...really anything you want as long as you are interested in it.

Thanks Kyle. haven't given a lot of thought to things I might be interested in learning. I want to tell you, though, that I am enjoying the journey and this site. Thanks

Yeah, just remember that a niche could be anything. The more you are interested in the topic, the easier it can be to write about. The is the reason we suggest starting with something you are passionate about as it can often times become second nature to create content and communicate within that niche.

Glad you are enjoying yourself here at WA!
