The Clock Is Ticking - How Do You Manage Your Time?

I've got things to write, things to promote, and things to learn...and 24 hours a day to do this in. Oh yes, let's not forget a job to work, a family to grow, and activities to do.

Here's my new schedule:

WEEKDAYS

Morning (before work) - grab a coffee and go to my writing place for at least one hour

Afternoon (after work) - exercise

Evening - study a specific lesson on WA or my writing class for 60 to 90 minutes. Then turn the lights to where I like (you should control your lighting and create the ambiance that you like) and write on my main project for as long as the muse and I are speaking to one another.

Before Bed - read

WEEKENDS

Morning - grab a cup of coffee and write for a few hours

Mid-morning to mid-afternoon - housework/yard work (gets me points with my wife:)

Afternoon - exercise

Evening - study and write

Now, imagine if you will, still needing to find the time to promote your work (nobody else is going to do it) whether through social media or in forums, etc. It's easy to get caught up in these and spend a lot of time "conversing". But if it's adding value to your main project then it's often time well spent. And don't forget the importance of those other things (that sometimes get in the way) like spending time with your family, working, having fun, watching TV, shopping...you get the picture.

What do you think? Good schedule? Idealistic? What's yours and is it working for you? And finally, is your schedule improving your life or giving you stress and frustrations that you don't need? So change. Improve. Become that person that learns how to balance your online work with your real-life responsibilities. Make your "business hours" work for you!

I think I've missed something but, heck, the clock just struck another hour!

It needs discipline to upkeep the schedule. You seemed to have lots of it. Good for you Rick. Take care !

I'm not always able to follow this but I keep working at it and it is getting easier. Thanks for your comment.

I personally don't like to keep to a schedule, but in reality what I do daily is scheduled. It seems more like a habit than a schedule. Go figure.

That's what I'm needing to develop, a habit. I think if I keep to a schedule that becomes a habit I will write regularly.

You have to work to a schedule and yours seems to be working well keep it up

Hi. Thought I had replied to your comment. My apologies. The more I'm doing my schedule the more it's becoming a habit that I'm enjoying and plan to keep doing.

Hi,
It is good shedule
Coming to my one. I engaged with lots at the same time. My main job with no fixed shift, looking after my sun(2 years old) and daughter whilst my wife at work and so on. Staying until late work for me.

Hi. I'm often up late as well but by then I'm tired and need to do something relaxing. I either read or watch a favorite TV show, something to help my mind relax before I go to bed. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rick,
Looks like you have a great schedule there! I try to set a schedule for myself for days I'm off and days I work my regular job, but it seems there's always something coming up lately.

Just this last week I had four days off my regular job and had big plans of getting a lot done with learning here and working on my sites...well, those plans didn't go along with what other family members were thinking and I ended up with barely any time to do anything I had planned. Awww, well...maybe I needed a break anyways. It was nice to spend time with them all.

One thing that's worked well for myself in the past is to either stay up late or get up earlier than anyone else in the house to accomplish my goals, depending whether I work my regular job or not that day.

When I have to work, I get up an hour or two early to get some of my goals for the day accomplished. But, days I'm off my job I stay up really late to get things done...often til sunrise, lol....always been a night owl.

I do need to set a more balanced schedule though with exercise and different activities. Thanks for sharing and best wishes :) -Sherry

Those darn families and friends :). I'm going to be adjusting my schedule to get up earlier. Thats when I'm thinking best and able to create. We do have to find the best hours that we're the most productive. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, Rick, that you need to make your hours work for you! Sometimes, it takes time to figure what, in fact, works best, too. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, it's individual for each of us. Some may only have a few hours a week and others a few a hours a day. We each must find something that works for us.

You are right Rick , spending time with friends and loved ones is always a well spent time. Scheduling may help us further our goals. Blessings!
Hilda

That should be our first priority, our families and friends. I've created my schedule around those, which is why my writing schedule is the one that suffers the most.

A very good plan you have for time management.

Me, not so much. I don't have everything worked out in a schedule because with my life as crazy as it is, I've never been able to stick to it. Something always seems to come up. :- /

Thanks for sharing today. Enjoy your day!

Yup, something always comes up even with well-laid plans like mine. I've been on this schedule for a week and haven't been consistent so I plan to tweak it for the coming week and do better.

Thank you Rick
I honestly believe that time is better spent with family. We only have a limited amount of time left on this planet and why spend it working like you have for the past 40 years or so. In my view. a person is wasting time if it is not with the family you ignored somewhat for the sake of working. Thus WA should not be a priority but should be the least important thing in life right now.
To me family is number one for the rest of my life
Ken

Yes, I agree. My family is tops, too. My new schedule is actually built around our family life. I'm in a position to dedicate more time to writing now that my eldest is in university and my other child is in grade 12. I have more time "for me" but still must dedicate time to my family as we evolve. Thanks for sharing.

Great post Rick!
Time management is indeed very important and crucial gauge for one's success . . . . .
As the saying goes "Time is the best gift you can give to someone as you have shared a part or fraction of your life."

I like that. Time is one of our most valuable assets and to give it to someone, with no desire of repayment, is one of the best gifts we can give.
