Scam and Spam - A Letter Apart

I never realized until today that the words scam and spam are only one letter apart from each other. Hmm, in what other ways are they similar:

Scam

  • claim they have a product for sale (it's like an Easter egg hunt to find it sometimes)
  • not honest or legit...and are after your money
Synonyms: swindle, trickery, fraud (in some cases)

Spam
  • unsolicited bulk messages
  • junk emails which often include bogus offers...sometimes referred to as "scam" (see above)
Synonyms: exploitation, repeat ad nauseum, phishing (the word just sounds wrong)

Here's how they work together: Spam Your Scam!

Did you know that according to Wikipedia in 2011 the estimated figure for spam messages was around the 7 trillion mark?

And you wonder why Kyle and Carson don't like nor allow scam/spams here at Wealthy Affiliate?

I'm grateful to see more posts and reviews at WA of late about the different scams out there. Be diligent...do your homework before you get scammed.

Thanks for reading.

Rick, I think many of us have experienced one or the other or both. Wiki spam fact, cool, but am sure they have a huge drop barrel for them all. How about, Bam the Spam and Bam the Scam. I don't like spam spiders or scam snakes. So great to be here, in the safe zone. Hope to hear how you are doing.

Good one. Thanks for your sense of humor. All the best to you here.

Thank you, Rick, anytime. A little humor makes the day a bit more fun. And the best to you too :)

Yeah, they are far too close together, however a spammers are typically much more sophisticated than scammers.

I think that it is a good that the community here is getting a constant lesson on what to look for when it comes to a scam on the Internet, as there are so many of them and although some may not be classified as a "scam" per say, there are too many run of the mill, low quality guru products out there that the folks here simply do not need.

Sure it is good to continually educate yourself, but I can honestly say there is enough education here within WA to start a business in whatever vertical of the Internet that you want...without having to seek out another "shiny" product.

As I said in this post, Act Like a Dumb Fish and Get Caught!

Scam and Spam eh? It kind of reminds me about the email thing that came through the internet a few years ago about how bad margarine was because it was only 1 molecule different from some horrible compound (I don't recall the details),

I consider myself science challenged, which is why I studied business in college - but I understand enough to know 1 molecule makes a huge difference. CO2 - (Carbon Dioxide), the fizzy part of soft drinks; is only 1 molecule away from CO (Carbon Monoxide) that deadly gas that kills people. If the claim were true, then Coca Cola would have been out of business decades ago, as most of us would have died.

New inspiration for a blog post. Thanks for the inspiration.

I did not know that about molecules. Thanks for the analogy and I look forward to your post.

I love email filters becaus all of the scams that comes my way ends up In my spam folder then I can go thru them and write my reviews about thre dirty rotten tricks.

What an excellent idea, Tommy. I have been deleting my spam folder but I really should pay attention and write about some of these. Thanks.

That's where I get all of my good ideas

Hi Rick! Good post! I think NAUSEOUS sums it up pretty well. :) I am also glad that we are hearing more about the scams here at WA. It keeps us aware and diligent to do our homework. and I hope all the newbies are taking note. Every time I've read here about one of these scams it does make me sick that once upon a time, I fell into one of them. Yuk!

Right there with you, Kathy. For those of us who have learned the hard way we should share this with others so they don't throw their money away.

You are absolutely right! :) I still shudder thinking about the amount of money I lost!
