Recording Videos: Pointers From The Stage

Hi everyone.

So I've now caught up on Boot Camp and have done two videos (easier than you think). When I was "preparing" I actually used some "stage secrets" from my time in theatre. So I thought I would share a few of them here...maybe things you won't learn in the training here but they will help you in your video preparation. And, ACTION (oops, that's the movies)

Have a script or an outline, depending on your comfort level.
This gives you time to organize your presentation and make sure it flows. Like any story, or post, it should have a beginning, middle, and end. Rehearse it a few times so it makes sense to you and you "stay on script" throughout your presentation.

This should be similar to what you're doing with your website posts; if you don't have a template you should create one.

Stay Loose Before Recording
1) Relax: loosen your body with your favorite exercise. I've always been a big fan of shoulder rolls before I go on because that seems to be where I tense up the most. If your body is tense your voice will actually sound tense as well. And guess what, this makes your visitors tense and likely to leave.

2) Enunciate: I'm famous for my "lazy voice" so before I go on I need to loosen my lips and speak clearly. It doesn't do me any good to make a video that you cannot understand because I'm mumbling.

Some good exercises (do them out loud):
---say the alphabet (different from Kyle's "Alphabet Soup Technique") 5 times fast, speaking clearly and precisely
---say your favorite tongue twister 5 times fast

3) Focus: Like Jay always says in his Friday WAbinars, "get rid of any distractions". Having the dog bark, the kids scream, or the telephone ring means you have to restart. Make sure you are controlling your environment.

Speak Conversationally
Don't sound "canned"! This must be you talking and not some "Crazy Rick Used-Car-Salesman" TV commercial. This is why you need to follow the stay loose points above so that when you hit the record button your instrument, your voice, is ready.

You are the "character" in this production and you don't want to come off as stilted or robotic. Your voice needs to be natural and friendly...unlike those glitzy scammers we need to stay away from. People want helpful and genuine when they're watching a video and listening to the presenter.

Be Ready to Ad Lib...it's OK
Even with a script it's easy to get side-tracked or thrown by something that doesn't go quite right. That's because we are so aware of that **RECORD** button and the fact that it's catching everything we say and do. But that's OK...ad lib if you need to and get back on track...that's why you have a script right beside you.

Funny story: when recording my 2nd video I really got messed up and actually stopped speaking while still recording and then made a comment, "Crap, that didn't come out right". I had to hit the stop recording button, start over...and...aced that part the 2nd time!

Take a Deep Breath
Just like on stage, right before coming out from behind that curtain, we were taught to take a deep breath...slowly release it...and go! Do this just before you hit "record", knowing that everything else has been taken care of. And then focus on presenting your message to your visitor.

Oh, there are no Oscar awards but your visitors will appreciate your efforts!

Thanks for reading.

Rick, you are a star! Thank you. Been starting and stopping, so your helpful tips will come in handy. Along with SimpleBooklet, may just get one on my site finally.

Today is blog catch up day, hope to finish one here in WA and on a website or two.
You are an inspiration. Look forward to seeing you at our next After Wabinar.

Good, Good, Good Stuff Rick. Thank you for sharing it!!! Vids can really be aggravating!

Who knows, YouTube might eventually give awards.

I still have not done any videos. I just don't want to do it. I am not lazy. Thanks for the info you did give and I will keep it in mind if I ever knuckle down and just do one!
