Hiding something? Time to edit your profile

What does your profile say about you? Anything? Nothing?

Does it say that you want to succeed. Everyone here does, so that doesn't set you apart from others, so why even say it?

Does it say you're glad you found WA? Everyone of us are. We're tired of scams and programs that do nothing for us, so why say it?

Does it say you have a wife? Now we're getting somewhere. That somewhat sets you apart and tells us something about you. Only some men and a few of the women have wives, so we know a bit about you. The same goes for husbands.

Kids? Ya, they're incentive to succeed because you certainly need money for them.

How about where you are from? I have a few friends here on WA and I have read all of their profiles. Where do you think they are from? Damned if I know, only about 1 in 10 tell you in their profile and I can't here them talk to guess by their accent. We have a couple of countries represented here at WA. Perhaps they have a wider spectrum of living and figure that we all live on the World Wide Web.

I'd like to know where you live, and your age. If your young I can ask you questions that involve technology and expect a fairly correct answer. If your old, we can talk about the young people that know all the stuff about technology. And women, you can tell your age, after all, this isn't a dating service.

What's your background? What are your interests? Are you involved in special activities...sports, musical groups, garage bands, help with special Olympics, belong to organizations. We want to know about you, not just to get to know you, but to know who we can pick up information from or who might profit from our information.

Don't treat your profile lightly. Use a decent photograph that actually shows your face. There are pictures that are so bad that it's your guess whether it's an ugly grumpy guy with no eyes or mouth standing in front of a bright light, or a hippopotamus lumbering into the sunset. Using an avatar does nothing either. It's really hard to pose a serious question to someone who poses as a puppy or a pansy. Let us see what you look like and today, not when you graduated from high school 40 years ago. Be yourself, we're all friends attempting to make a little money on the web. Use a clear photo of your face, we won't laugh, honest!

Thank you, Richie. I went back and read my profile. I found that I'm guilty of almost everything you mentioned so I changed it tp be a little more personal.

Hear, Hear!

Richie,
Thanks for writing this. Your profile is a simple introduction to others who you are. I have seen too many, not just at WA, but Facebook and other social media sites where people put in, like you said a hippo or something silly. Is this who they think they really are? I wonder sometimes.

Having a simple picture and intro on who you are, background, interests, etc... is important and it is also much more professional. It may not be perfect, but so what, it's who we are.

Letting others know why we do what we do is just who we are.

Jim

Great post Richie, I always want to know where people here come from.
Hope more people see your post.

Pete

Hi Richie I second it's good if people would put at least their own photo. About other informainformation may be one can PM and may be ask where your concern is. To be brief I'm married to one loving husband and we have one very beautiful daughter. From Kenya. For those who dont know Kenya is in East Africa the southan Sahara. If you love seeing animals you are welcome to Kenya. If you PM me ill tell you more about myself

So you don't like my photo of Ken the greyhound??? LOL!

He is the love of my life so perhaps the photo does tell you a bit about me!

Will be updating my photo soon - I am a photographer so should be a bit ashamed that I haven't got a decent photo of me! Will have to get one of my photography friends to do one for me.

Also need to update my profile text as I haven't rewritten it since I started six months - maybe I will do it today as it is a wet and windy Sunday here in the UK!

A great post, Richie- thank you!

Best Wishes
Hazel

Well, Richie, I did mention my hometown in my bio but I neglected to mention my age (71). But being 71 doesn't mean I don't know a thing or two about technology. Please try not to make too many assumptions about others. We're all doing our best.

I was hoping people would pickup oon my sarcasm. I was reflecting on the classic assumptions people make. I am 76 and started with a word processer in the late 70s or early 80's. I try to use wit in my writing, but sometimes it turns out half-wit. Thanks for the comment.

Don’t be too harsh on people. Many people are wary of putting out too much personal info for security reasons. There are a lot of weirdos out there (not necessarily in WA but on the interwebs in general). Women in particular may feel hesitant to put a lot of personal information out there.
I do understand what you’re saying though.
All I’m saying is that there are reasons why people are wary. 😊
It’s great that you feel safe enough that it’s not a concern for you.

Great point.

I could not agree more. This is not a private circle and nobody can tell people what to share and what not. It is not about hiding, it is about protecting.

Ya, for sure do not tell us what country you're from 'cause we'll comecome and find you, especially if you say you're a stay at home mom. We aren't asking for your social security number or address, give me a break. Just think of me as Bret Kavanaw, that's all in the past.😇

OK .... there's no need to ridicule me for my point of view.

Again, awesome that you've never been in a situation where this is an issue for you.

He has ridiculed himself, actually. He talks as if he knew every single member's intentions (including guests') on this platform and that speaks for itself.

@RichieR You should show more respect for fellow members, Richie. Mia made a valid point without being disrespectful, she did not deserve your caustic reply.
That being said, you can have the last word and walk away with another sarcastic reply. I have just unfollowed you.

Well, I wish you could come and retake my photo for WA. I like it, but it is not professional and is a bit fuzzy.

Now you know I read your profile. I read it to see if I fit your criteria, and by George, I do! I also agree with you. I often read profiles of new people, and am intrigued when I learn interesting things about people.

I also read your profile to find out about you, and again I agree. Our profile is kinda like our passport into this group. It is a way for us to get acquainted, and it is nice to know a little bit about each other.

Good blog -- thanks for writing it.

I would love to do that, but fuzzy or not I can tell you are a nice looking woman who is mature enough to give good advice. I just got tired of seeing avatars of puppies and dark photos that showed nothing of the person. You're right, it is a way of getting acquainted.
Thanks for the nice comments.

I think you would approve of my profile. I agree. I think it really helps to know about our fellow members here!

Nice to meet you!
Jessica

No, I don't approve, I love your profile. It reminded me of one thing I failed to bring up. You should update your profile on a regular basis. You did a beautiful job of that. The profile is kind of a resume to convince people that it's worth their time to follow you.
BTW I have been following you for a while now

Well now I am following you back. I am sorry I didn't do that sooner. With thousands followers now it is hard (impossible) to keep up.

I am glad you love it! I strive for authenticity.

I have one problem though. You said this is not a dating site...it is not that is true but many men don't seem to get that.

I can't count the number of men who have hit on me here and it gets obnoxious!
