Did you know that Anna Jarvis, the woman who establised Mother's Day then did everything to eliminate it? Let's find out what happened!

Years after setting up Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis ate at the Tea Room at the Wanamaker store in Philadelphia. She saw that they offered Salad Mother's Day and ordered it. As soon as she served her salad she threw her on the floor, left her money and left the shop. Jarvis had lost all control over the celebration that had helped create it, and she was disappointed that Mother's Day had become commercial.

During the Civil War, her mother cared for the injured on both sides. She also tried to bring peace between the two sides, creating Mother's Day of Friendship. When her mother died in 1905 Anna Jarvis was very depressed. So he found a way out trying to create a day that would honor all mothers.

On May 10, 1908, several Mother's Day events took place at the church that her mother taught on Sundays, as well as at the Wanamaker store. Jarvis did not go to the event at the store but sent out 500 white cloves, which were her mother's favorite flowers, which were meant to be worn by the sons and daughters who would attend to honor their mothers and imply Purity of motherly love.

In 1909, many Senators mocked the idea of Mother's Day, but that did not stop. With the help of organizations such as the World's Sunday School Association he managed to pass Mother's Day from Congress in 1914.

Many industries have supported the Mother's Day movement, such as florists. Jarvis accepted their donations and spoke at their conferences. Soon the white carnation became the symbol of the Mother's Day, and florists from all over the country sold out in white cloves. Later, florists began to advocate the idea of intense flower colors and white to be for the mothers who have died.

Soon Mother's Day began to become commercial. Jarvis did not want this day to be a day of profit, but an emotional day. Beginning in 1920, he began to urge people to stop buying flowers and gifts and turned to those who had previously supported commercially. She tried to sue the florists and make the carnation a trademark of Mother's Day but did not succeed. On the contrary, Florist Telegraph Delivery-FTD offered her a sales commission.

Jarvis did not stop fighting for what she believed. She was arrested for trying to stop selling the carnations, dragging her out of halls where the American War Mothers met. Up to a letter against Eleanor Roosevel wrote, because she was using her mother's day to raise money for charity.

In one of her latest appearances, Jarvis was going from door to door in Philadelphia to pick up signatures to revoke Mother's Day.

Jarvis died on November 24, 1948, at the Marshall Square Sanitarium, a psychiatric asylum. What she has never learned is that part of the bill for her stay there, paid her a group of grateful florists.

Happy Mother's Day!
