I'm getting spam on my site. My Akismet setting says the latest version is installed. What's the story with the key for Akismet? I don't remember ever having to do that. Also,

You will always get spam but with Akismet it still gets through. That's why I stopped using it ages ago.

I use Anti spam bee which you can download the plugin from within your website.

Just go to plugins on your left hand side select add new then in the right hand box either type in anti spam bee or if you prefer you can do the same with WP-SpamShield as stated below from Steve.

You will get some other choices but these are the best two just select the one you want click install then follow any instruction that may be there and you are off and running.

Very important:

Don't forget to delete Akismet from your plugin site not just deactivate but also delete.

Since using Anti spam bee any spam that comes along gets rejected straight away and I don't see them at all just get a number of spam that has been rejected which is over a thousand at the moment.

I am more than happy using this many others here use the same as well.

Hope this will help you out.

Take care be well and wishing you the best going forward.
Andre

Many of us switched over to WP-SpamShield per Kyle's recommendation and it works much better for me.

Thanks, Steveo! How do I do that?

WP-SpamShield is a free plugin. Just install and activate it.

My niche is about healing from emotional abuse. I have a lot to say about this topic, but I want to be careful about not divulging confidential information and/or hurting people

Yeah, if it's sensitive information from a person who didn't consent to being named on your site, then definitely make up a name. You can even say that the names are made up to provide confidentiality.

Thanks Vitaliy. I agree - I would definitely not use people's real names. My main concern was whether or not to use my own. Since some of the things I'll share on this website are from my own personal experience, or those of people I know, it wouldn't be hard to figure out who I'm talking about if you know me. I probably won't use a photo of myself, either. Maybe an illustration that could be more generic, or an image that's not even of a person. Any input on that (photo) side of things?

It's really a matter of preference. I remember I used to write articles on content that I felt uncomfortable sharing my name with (LOL), but in time I figured if the site/niche I was in was close to my heart, why not be proud of it. Now I gladly share my image/name to build more trust with people.

This doesn't mean you have to follow the same path. One thing you can do is start with a pen name and then if you feel comfortable sharing your name in the future, you can always change it up.

I like being me and it's okay for what I'm doing, but for what you are doing I think it's essential you change names.

Thanks - and I agree that for most niches, being "who you are" is best. This is just an out-of-the-box scenario. Thanks for your input!

Oh my goodness do I have a story to tell also. I'm currently writing a book/story of my life. The names have been changed to protect the 'guilty' LOL. I'm known by my book and online by a different persona. I've had a thing about names ever since I was adopted by my stepfather and changed my name. Pen names are a good idea in my opinion.

Thanks, JT. It's making more and more sense all the time to go with a persona. Thanks for the input.

Yes, I think confidentiality is important. A pen name sounds like a great idea.

I think I see a pattern emerging, here. :) Thanks!

I've always thought that on my site I should try to be me. But your niche isn't like mine (mine's about hiking) and I can completely see how keeping yourself out of the picture would be a sensible route. I don't think that this would in any way be a problem - often those in similar roles in the media (and out) take on a pen name, and not for their own protection/confidential requirements either. I think I would choose an appropriate name - but can't decide whether to say choose a name which sounds 'right' or one that is obviously made up, so that people will know that you will be dealing with them confidentially. It's a good question. Good luck with your thoughts - but right to sort it out at the start, as you said.
Jon

I agree, Jon. For most niches, using your own name is fine. For this one, however, I think I'll be better off using a persona. Thanks for your input!

If it were me, I would use pen names for everyone. Someone may recognize his/her story, but if it's a different name, they may just a kinship with that name. If it's his/her story with his/her name, you stand to hurt feelings and worse. Just my nickel.

That's my concern as well, Carla. Thanks for the input.

I started out a week and a half a go, and I thought I had found a good niche in "healing for emotional abuse." I still think it's a good niche, and I'm definitely passionate abo

Rusty is right Randi. If healing from emotional abuse is your passion and where you have experience, that's where you should go.

Starting all over again and with affiliate bootcamp is going to take much longer to see results with (3-6 months considering you're working daily).

I say stick to your current niche and push through.Once you do, you'll understand how powerful internet business can be. Continue with the training :)

Randi No No No, Don't put it aside,
if thats your passion go for it.
It is a extremely good niche to go into and has great potential if done right
If you need a hand with domain name selection or keyword research just give us a yell.

Rusty

What do you do when you are procrastinating? What do you think about when your mind wanders? What information do you search for on a regular basis? Pay attention to when you say 'I wish I could find more information on x'. You want a niche that has meaning to you.

I found this post from Kyle very informative. If you do the Boot Camp just realize the "Make Money Online" market is saturated. Look for a unique angle. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/kyle/blog/a-niche-is-a-group-of-people-looking-for-stuff

You could always start a blog through the affiliate bootcamp and then eventually create another one on your other passion.

Just an idea :)

And a really good one! Probably what I'll end up doing. I definitely won't discard the work I've done on Niche #1, but I do think I'll put it on the back burner for now.

Thanks so much for your input!

You're welcome.

At least you'll already have some work prepared when you're ready.

Exactly! Thanks again.

The Affiliate Program is good. You can use everything you learn to build a niche site later on when you decide. I highly recommend it.

Thanks, Carla! That's the direction I'm leaning.

It might be a good idea to use something different right now. You can always go back to it later. Good luck!

Indeed! I think that's what I'm going to do. Thank you for your input!

Definitely something to think about - I like your perspextive. I've done a bit of marketing, myself, over the years, and your approach makes a lot of sense. I have a tendency to over-think things and sometimes it gets in my way (can you tell?). ;-)

I have just created a new site in the niche you are talking about as I am healing form emotional abuse here it is if you want to take a look

Hi Randi, I don't know much about the Affiliate program since i am not doing it but from what I understand it is a good option for people who do not have a niche. As for coming up with a niche, I made a list of things I was into, things I wanted to learn more about and went from there. If you are passionate about the emotional abuse niche it still might be a good one if you feel you can write about it comfortably.

Thanks for the input, Jen! All the best!

I'm thinking about "healing from emotional abuse" for my niche... thoughts?

i would be interested in reading that niche site, especially with all that is going on in the news.

Thanks so much for your encouragement!

I love it. My opinion every person suffers from emotional abuse especially in childhood. This can be for everyone. Best of luck n_n

I think that's a great niche very timely and my guess is that there are millions of people seeking healing from emotional abuse. Great idea.

It is definitely a niche idea and there's a lot of potential behind it. You could have categories for men, women, kids, and various other situations from which emotional abuse arises from. I think it's a good niche Randi!
