People are used to .com, it is mostly used. It's just natural on the web to type .com. But, be careful not to have your web name similar to another. you'll drive your traffic there. Also, you want your web name short and memorable, the shorter and easier to remember is better.

.com over others in most cases. Think of it this way. When you think of a domain say Amazon..you just think Amazon right and automatically toss in .com. If you're using a .org someone might try .com by mistake and end up elsewhere.
Try to avoid hyphens for the same reason. I'd probably type ralphspeterson.com and forget the -'s myself.
