I'm still trying to find the best and easiest way for me to keep track. Right now, I'm using a method very similar to yours but still looking for other ideas too.
I put it all into excel eventually. If I worked in the same place every day, it wouldn't be such an issue. When it's cold, I work downstairs. When I have to keep an eye on someone or something, I work in the kitchen. The notebook is always with my laptop so no more receipts scattered everywhere, waiting to be filed.

I use paperless by Mariner Software. If I have paper receipts, I scan them in and organize them in electronic folders. Actually, I am using paperless for a whole lot more than receipts. I have found it an excellent way to digitize most of my clutter...I should have checked to see if Mariner has an affiliate program :)
