The Owl and the Songbird

Hey! So this isn't so much of a 'blog' as it is more of a 'motivational fable.' I wrote it around three years ago when I was feeling particularly discouraged and deflated. I wouldn't say that this is for everyone, more for children and the young at heart really, plus I am still improving my creative writing skills. But if it brings just a spark of happiness or motivation to someone, then I will be happy with that.

I'm particularly inspired by vintage works; Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Austen and Bronte and Victorian/Edwardian styles of writing. J.M Barrie and Beatrix Potter are favourites of mine also which is why I have elements of their charm and innocence within my writing. I am currently writing more for publication, but in the meantime I thought that it would be nice to share it here at WA for those who need a 'pick-me-up.' Have a great week all :)

The Owl and the Songbird

There was once a songbird who broke her wing,
So she could not fly and cared not to sing...

How it made her very sad to see
All the other birds flying high and free.
And taking to it with their very best,
Each would sing with joy, as he built his nest.

The days went by through cold and dark, warmth and light,
Each time another bird took flight,
The haunting memory of her fall, the unfairness of it all.

An owl close by asked,'what is wrong? Why are you not singing your song?'
The songbird with eyes full of tears,
Talked of happy times, her dreams and fears.
She asked, 'when will the misery end?'
'But my dear,' owl cried, 'broken wings mend!

I know there's difficulty in believing,
Can't you see? That's why you're grieving!
Pick up your feet, you can but try,
To start to walk before you fly.
In time the darkness has to end,
To bring the light,' said her feathered friend.

'Set a goal, pursue it well,
You weren't a victim when you fell.
This inconvenience proves to me,
How strong a songbird you can be.
I know you are keen, you're discontent,
You want much more, it's evident!
But even though you're feeling low,
You'd have given your dreams up long ago!'

Owl was right, the wise old thing,
And the songbird, at once, began to sing.
Though she'd been feeling all alone,
This pain was, but a stepping stone.

Seasons changed and time passed by,
'Til the day our songbird, at last, could fly.
She swooped and soared with a triumphant call,
'Never again will I fear to fall!'

The younger birds watched her on high,
As she laughed and danced in the sunlit sky.
Asking owl, 'who on earth is she?'
'An inspiration for us all,' said he.

'Sometimes when we're on our own,
Or maybe when we're far from home,
Not knowing if we're here nor there.
Yes life can sometimes be unfair.
But it's our nature for the thrill,
We'll step right up and always will.

Someday when you're not so small,
And you may hit your own brick wall,
It's never too late to turn things around,
What is lost with faith is surely found.
And when you've turned things back around,
You'll knock that damned brick wall right down.'

So as we're drawing to the end,
Know this - any type of break can mend.
If at all you're feeling blue,
Dream on - until your dream comes true.
If you really yearn to be it,
It entirely depends on how you see it,
If you want something with all your heart,
Take that step and make a start,
And believe in the lesson of this non-prose,
Like the songbird,
Singing the sweetest song as she goes.
