I just created a new site in the past day or two, but cannot login today. When I try to access the site, I am met with a blank screen with the message 'The site is experiencing

I have had that message and after a short time I was able to access the site.

Perhaps they are doing service on some of the servers

Quick question...Is it possible for posts to be indexed on keywords that I have not researched and included deliberately?...For instance, if there is a word or phrase (even one

Yup, you can be indexed for tons of phrases you're not 'targetting'. It's a good thing and anything you get 'ranked for' that doesn't actually fit your post will be adjusted by Google.

For example, I have a niche site about feral and community cats. I used in the same post, but NOT in this order, "Tiny Kittens" in different sentences. Now, not a bad thing, but I got Ranked for that keyword for a short period of time. Except Tiny Kittens in cat rescue is a rescue organization I wasn't writing about, so it made no sense I was ranking for that. So it eventually downgraded me. However, I was targetting "best food for outdoor cats" and I'm starting to get traffic from the key phrase "best foods for feral cats". See?

A good suggestion if you're doing well for a keyword that IS related to your original post is to add that keyword somewhere in the post if it make sense to do so. If you're indexed for something kind of related, you could always update your post to include information with that key phrase question, if it fits your main post?

Say, with my cat example, I have a post about What is a Feral Cat? If I started to rank for "Do Feral cats meow?" for some reason, I would go back to my post to update it to include whether or not feral cats meow, keeping my relevancy for that keyword. But like when I was ranking for Tiny Kittens rescue organization since I was talking about a book about kitten care, I did NOT update my post to include information on Tiny Kittens rescue.

Does that make sense?

Yes it makes perfect sense. Thanks so much!

yes and its a wonderful thing to

Yes absolutely.

While doing some research, I encountered two or three established blogs that do a very good job marketing my products. It's still fairly niche, but I feel that these sites are

Hi Quinn,
I think you are on the right track studying what others are doing.
Check out their wording and the photos they are using. Maybe you can add some content or add more vibrant photos.

That should help your ranking.

Marion

If these sites are doing well, why don't you imitate them? You can write about the same things they do and put your own flair into it. Don't copy other people's work.
Nobody is like you. No one writes like you. You are an original.
Every topic under the sun has been written about but not the same way each time.
You are not in a race. Don't be discourage. There is enough online traffic in any niche for all of us to be successful.
Just keep putting up valuable content and still keep your eyes on your competitors. It is a form of flattery :)

Don't give up!

Hi Reta,
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I felt uneasy coming across such well-developed sites, but after sleeping on it for a night, I know i'm not out of the game. Frankly, I feel I'm lucky that I don't have even more competition. Plus, as I've been studying these other sites, I see that there is actually a lot I can learn from them, and they have given me a few ideas for how I can improve my work. Obviously, I don't want to copy them, but I definitely see some things I can do that haven't been done yet. Thanks again!

I think I already know the answer to this one, but I want to be 100 percent certain. I've made edits to a few published posts already, but I want to make sure that I can edit o

yes you can - dont make changes to the url or you will confuse google.
ideally leave the title alone as well
but the rest.....
if it has been pulished for a while, why not let google know to recrawl it by adding it to the url inspection - if you are that far on in the course - if not dont worry - google will visit sometime and fiind it changed.
remember that most browsers show cached pages so t osee your changes on your site press ctrl +f5 to bypass the cache and refresh the page
have fun
phil

Hi Quinn. You can edit a post at any time, and there's no time limit. You will only have issues if you edit the permalink (url) to your post. Jim

I edit published posts, right?

Whatever your niche product(s), they are likely being sold on various sites online already. To what extent should I be familiarizing myself with these distributors, their prici

Just wanted to say that not all businesses will have an affiliate program. That's what I'm finding out myself with my niche. Not a lot of wood carving suppliers have affiliate programs. There are a ton of woodworking ones out there, but not to many wood carving ones.

Just a thought to keep in mind.
Good luck with your search and your journey here at WA.

Hi Quinn,
As an affiliate marketer, you want to apply to be an affiliate of any company selling the product you're promoting. It may sell in many places, but if they don't have an affiliate program, it does you no good.
If it's not to make any sales, and you're directing your readers there for other reasons, then I would make sure that the site is reputable with good reviews, customer service, current information, etc.
You should always put your readers first, so making sure you're sending them somewhere good is important.
Cheers,
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for the response - it cleared a few things up for me. I have been researching websites that offer my products in order to determine which offer the best, most reliable service, product information, etc. But since I'm starting out, I feel it is too soon to select a single brand/company to promote. My understanding is that we select a product to promote - one perhaps made by a handful of brands - and after a while, we can apply for a particular brand's affiliate program. Is that right or do I have it backwards?

Quinn

Yes you’re right. You can be an affiliate to many. This way you might be able to write some comparison reviews as well. And one might offer discount coupons and such where another wouldn’t so you’d have something to promote through your email list and such. ( but that’s down the road, lol)

Perfect. I have a lot to look forward to. Thanks so much!
