A Personal Reminder

From time to time, it is necessary to remind yourself why you are doing what you're doing; why you've chosen to take a certain course of action; why you've made the choices that you've made. I joined WA about a month ago, and have since made the decision to go yearly. I've decided to go in for the long haul.

Thinking about this choice, I find that there are many practical justifications for having made it. For one, learning about marketing and social media is increasingly important in the digital era; also, earning a secondary source of income (however far in the future I begin to earn one) is a prudent move from a financial standpoint. And I can think of other good reasons.

But there is a deeper, more personal reason for my decision: I want to resist complacency; I want to challenge myself. I believe that whenever your life becomes routine, you need to seek out new challenges in order to grow. A worthwhile life is one that involves personal growth - mental, emotional, intellectual, etc.

The truth is, I don't know much about business or marketing. I have little experience in these areas. But I enjoy learning and I feel I need to challenge myself whenever possible. More than anything else, that is why I am here. I want to prove to myself that there are no insurmountable obstacles - that I can do whatever I set my mind to.

As I see it, the common way of thinking about ability is misguided. People often ascribe a person's capabilities - be they intellectual, athletic, etc. - to talent; to natural skilll; to something innate. People convince themselves and others that they are gifted in some ways but not in others. While everyone has certain limitations, I believe that talent lies wherever we apply ourselves. I prefer to think that our skills are acquired through intentional, dilligent practice. Not talent.

Decide on a goal that want to do achieve, but doubt you can. And work on it. Develop the skills necessary to do so. Be persistent; be resilient, and grow your abilities.

So when you are struggling with doubt and asking yourself whether this is for you, just remember: no one is born to do this. No one came into this world with an innate talent for internet marketing. (Seriously, think about how absurd that sounds.) But people can develop a talent for it. I can. You can. So let's do it.

It's a daily reminder. This takes patience and time. Like most things you have to learn it to earn it.

Well said Quinn.
I think it's reminder for many people in this platform. Once a while we need to step back to retrospect what that we really want out of this life.
