26th January is the day on the Indian calendar that awakens patriotic feelings in the minds of the countrymen, right after the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Through colorful events, and parades, images of the country's culture and history emerge. From New Delhi to Kolkata, all parts of the country are decorated around Republic Day.

But what is the importance of this day? What is the history behind this day?

Republic Day is celebrated in India on 26th January every year. India got independence from British rule on 15 August 1947. Independence Day is celebrated on that day. But since India did not have its own constitution at that time, independent India was governed according to the amended version of the British Government's India Act' of 1935.

But after this, the need for India's own constitution began to emerge. After the independence of the country, the Constituent Assembly was announced. Members of the Constituent Assembly are elected.

The Constituent Assembly was formed with important personalities like Dr. BR Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

On August 29, 1947, a Drafting Committee was formed under the leadership of Ambedkar to formulate a permanent constitution in India. On November 4 same year, the Drafting Committee submitted the draft of the Indian Constitution to the Constituent Assembly.

After more than two years of direct discussion and deliberation with the people, some amendments, additions, and changes were made to the proposed constitution. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly finally adopted the draft of the Indian Constitution.

308 members of the assembly signed two handwritten copies of the constitution on 24 January 1950. One was in English and the other in Hindi. Two days later, on January 26, the Indian Constitution came into force. India officially emerged as a sovereign democratic state. Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President of independent India.

As such, there is a history of recognizing 26 January as Democracy Day. In December 1929, a Congress session was called in Lahore under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru. A motion was tabled in this session. It was announced that if the British Government did not grant Dominion status to India by January 26, 1930, the full Swaraj( Independence) of India would be declared.

The British Government did not grant Dominion status to India during that period. As a result, Congress started an active movement declaring the full independence of India.

To maintain the importance of January 26, 1930, the Constitution of India was adopted on this day in 1950 and this day was celebrated as Republic Day.

Some more important facts about Republic Day:

1. The Constitution of India came into act on January 26 at 10:18 am.

2. A parade was held in Delhi on this day. The eight-kilometer long parade starts from Raisina Hill. It then ends at Red Fort via Rajpath, India Gate.

3. On January 26, 1950, the parade was held at the Irvine Stadium (now the National Stadium) instead of the highway. At that time there was no wall around the Irvine Stadium and the Red Fort could be clearly seen from there.

4. A 21times gun salute is fired during the national anthem. This salute starts at the beginning of the national anthem and ends with the end of the national anthem at 52 seconds.

5. Tableaus from different states participate in the Republic Day parade every year. Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force participated in the parade.

Thanks,Preetam, for sharing about your country. Didn't know any of it.
I did visit India in 1988 and was there 26 days, traveling from Madras South to Kerala state and then back North on the spine and to Madras. Beautiful country and lots of history.
Where do you live?

I live in West Bengal, one of the historical place in India. Motherland of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore and many more schooler and freedom fighter.

Thanks. Haven't been there. What's it like there?

It's all green crops and Mudd houses in villages and a large number of people are doing business with crops or handcrafted products. If you ever planning to visit again contact me I will show you some historical places.

Just might do that. Thanks.
