The SCORE Model and how it can help you discover your niche

Last Update: June 26, 2020

As a coach over the years there are many coaching models out there, some basic and some not. I always like simple and generally used them in the past but it got me thinking. How can it help us find our niche? So I had to go and see if it worked. So S.C.O.R.E stands for

Symptoms

These are things that you notice around you, what are people are complaining about. They may want to achieve something but can’t. It may be a product they can’t find, cat hair everywhere or trying to find an alcohol free option and feeling frustrated as a result. Results are not the same as causes, they are signs that there is a problem, a want or a need. ( I love cats by the way)

Causes

What are the causes of the symptom? We often try to tackle the symptom but it's the cause we really can help our readers with then the symptom goes away. So if we can direct our reader to a fantastic cat hair brush the cause is not being able to give the cat a grooming he or she really likes. In terms of my niche, highlighting some non-alcoholic options is not the cause, it's the fact that there are hardly any out there or people don’t know about them.

Outcome

What do they get as a result of buying into your suggestions or help? Or course they find a solution. People might say “you know what I’m so relieved about!” Or life was so difficult before I got this. People buy outcomes, regardless if they are moving away from a problem or toward a solution. At the end of the day the outcome is the same. What outcome can we help our readers with? What are they searching for online? If they did not have a want or need they would not be searching!

Resources

What would be the resources you can help them with that outcome? How would life be better for them? What would they see, hear and feel around them? What help can you give them that makes a difference, education, your story, a product? Remember storytelling uses all the senses. "You know what when visitors come and see me there just isn’t the cat hair everywhere that there used to be, it is this brush it really helps". Or you know "when I go out now I am really educated on the benefits of beers with no alcohol, I feel confident in asking for what I want. I know so much more now than I did."

Effect

What’s the long term effect on both your reader and the world around them. They may have wanted to lose weight but now their fitness is so much better and what’s more they can fit into that shirt they bought when they were overweight. In terms of alcohol free beer, you know what suppliers are making more options available, they finally realize there is customer satisfaction in this and they get to make a profit! What’s the long term effects on the lives, families and communities they serve. In other words, what is the bigger picture here?

Well regardless of the model, I hope it helps those thoughts in a niche. What can I talk passionately about that has symptoms, causes, outcome, resources, effect. It's a good place to start. What are the symptoms, causes and outcomes of your niche? Then I would love to know what are the resources you can give them that improves the lives of your readers long term?

PS I don't have a cat hair product to sell but do have a cat
