What Do You Think of Upsells?

I thought of asking this question from two points of view.

As a marketer and as a consumer.

As a Marketer

As a marketer, I'm a big fan of funnels.

When someone buys a product from one of my websites, I capture their email address into my autoresponder and invite them to an immediate upsell. The upsell is to a complimentary product and they can buy it or not, using the payment method they've already entered, without having to enter it again.

How many upsells?

Just one. Very occasionally, a downsell as well. That's a lower-priced product that they are offered if they decline the upsell.

As a Consumer

I was triggered to create this post by a product I purchased this morning.

It was a PLR aimed squarely at one of my niches. The quality looked acceptable and it was low-priced.

So I bought it.

Only to be plunged into Funnel Nightmare.

There were 9 (count 'em, 9) upsells, totaling thousands of dollars (for a product costing less than $10). Each upsell had a long, long sales page that you had to scroll to the bottom of in order to decline it. Took me ages.

Any upsell you declined took you to the same offer at a lower price. I think any marketer who does that is showing a total lack of integrity. Do you agree?

The Final Blow

After all that, I wasn't even able to download the purchased product because of what appeared to be a technical glitch.

I've submitted a support ticket.

As they were marketing the product through Warrior+, I do have recourse through them if necessary.

But I'll never get the wasted time back.

Conclusion

I will NEVER buy from this particular merchant again.

So be careful of your upsells.

Wow, I have been through the same scenario! I am very reluctant to buy anything from the warrior forum even if I know the vendor most vendor Refund policies are not honored, if I purchase anything I research the vendors. I like buying bundles from reputable people via PayPal. Thank you for this post.

I think a lot of people are coming round to your way of thinking, Jackie.

Hi Phil, I hope so because it can be very frustrating

As a consumer I have very much disliked the whole upsell experience about 99% of the time. Your way of doing things is balanced. I don't mind a single upsell that gives a deeper dive into what I'm buying - staying relevant - and then a thanks when I decline and move on. That I don't mind. I'm definitely not buying if someone invites me to their entire library of offerings regardless of if it's related to what I bought. Now they've gone from helping me with a problem, to selling to me. An email later down the road that is the purpose of inviting me to learn about what other product/service offerings are available is acceptable, but not when I'm in the buying process.

I'm new to this, but as a marketer, I will aim to keep this in mind when I'm setting things up for success. I believe in gaining the trust of customers and giving them an incredible experience so they tell all their friends, because you can be sure they will tell them if their experience is awful.

Thanks so much for this comment, Kim. It perfectly encapsulates how I feel about it.

I know where your coming from. I don’t mind an up sell that is only a few dollars different but can offer me a lot more. You are looking after me that means. But when you go from 10,s to 1,000,s, you are looking after you and I will not buy.

Hmm.should buy it from Vietnam then tell them to come and collect…have you ever seen the maps here..lol.

You said "an upsell" and that's dead right. When you have to plow through 9+, it gets pretty old, pretty quick.

As you said, maybe a few, but I will be very purposeful and honest. I hate Warrior on this subject. I can’t even find or use the ones I did buy. I have quit the upsells without declining, all sites, and they come through with the original purchase, every time.

Your reaction seems to be a common one, Donna. Thanks for responding.

Overall I've never been a fan of the upsell. On rare occasions they are ok, but usually they come across as shady designed to shake more money out of me. Even a simple, would you like fried with that? If I had wanted fries with that I would have asked.

I think there are ways to do it that are less pushy. I think Amazon has the right idea with their customers also bought area on sales pages. It's not pushy, it's informative.

While on this topic, I've really grown to despise the popups on websites trying to divert me away from what I'm reading. Sometimes on mobile it's impossible to even close the popup out and I simply need to leave the page. Fact is, I'm there to read whatever it was I was reading, not to leave to this new thing you popped in front of me (usually seeking to grab my email address).

Better to build the relationship and make the occasional pitch when it's relevant and not pushy.

The person you were dealing with sounds pretty scummy really. No relationship and with each subsequently lower offer also tells you they were trying hard to fleece you on the initial offer. So many flaws in their approach to you it makes one shake their head.

A great response, Jason. Gosh, I could have another rant about popups. I close them without reading them, with the same attitude as you. It's unwarranted and rude interruption to why I'm there.

The only popup I ever use on my sites (and only on 1 or 2) is exit intent, when the visitor is leaving anyway.

Upsells can be used as helping customers to give more value or take away their time and money. It depends on the person who sells it and how he wants to upsell it.

We need to be careful in a few cases like this...

Thanks for sharing your experience, Phil.

Yes indeed it's all about value

It's easily overdone, Sujith.
