There's usually an option for you to specify the width of the images. It's automatically set at 540 (or smaller if your images are smaller). so you can change the 540 to 300 or 400 or whatever you want.

When you are editing, place your cursor in the bottom right corner where a resize arrow will appear. Drag it in, to the size you want.
I did that and it showed them as small. But when I published it they showed up really large as you see them in my blog.

OK I just logged into my website and there is a whole page in Spanish with a picture of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It looks like someone has hacked my site. How is that possible

When I opened Site Rubix to work on my website, there were two administrators. Myself and someone named EbonyGarden 9941. Who is that and why are they on my website?
In settings - general you must have "anyone can subscribe" checked. Uncheck it, then go to Users and delete EbonyGarden asap.
Thank you for that information. I unchecked it and I deleted the post and the user. Why would someone do that?
Because they can, your site was left open and there are some who'll always take advantage of that.
Did you delete the strange post too?

I successfully uploaded a picture but it looks to large.
One word of caution when downloading Irfanview is to be careful where you download it and make sure you don't also download an additional package of adware as with some websites that offer a download.
Always use their official site or a trustworthy one. Some add adware with it which needs to be removed best with another free downlod called "should I remove it" which uninstalls all useless power saping software that slows down your computer
If you do get this additional adware installed after removing it scan with Malewarebites and or a good anti-virus as well to make sure all of it has been removed.
All the best.

Hi. Ifanview has been mentioned below and I certainly recommend it for ease of use. Yes within wordpress media there are options but they are limited in scope.
you can actually change the dimensions of the picture inside of the WordPress media editor. you can simply reduce the number of pixels horizontally and keep the aspect ratio so that the vertical adjust automatically.
Google and download "Irfanview". It's free. Then open picture with it, select resize and change pixle settings to a smaller size and save in the same folder but mark it smaller so you keep the origional if you want to? Then it will upload faster and not be too large.
That is what we use.

I use an online photo editor

Ah right, sorry then, I don't know, other than what Marion suggested. :)
