The Importance of Writing it Down

The setting of goals is considered by many as a very serious thing, perhaps to be avoided, and not likely to work very well. But it does not have to be that way.

You can have really big goals, but if reaching that goal in the near future is not realistic, find a smaller goal that is within your reach and that is a milestone towards reaching the bigger goal. Once you have reached that milestone, set yourself the next reachable milestone goal, and so on. That way, reaching the big goal becomes more likely.

To make goal setting easier, you can ask yourself what you would like to happen, or what you would like to know, or what skill you would like to have, or what you would like to achieve.

That brings me to something I once did. I sat down one day and wrote down on a piece of paper what would be an ideal job for me. I visualized the ideal scene, from what the office would look like, the duration of the commute, my boss's attitude and personality, my co-workers, my salary, my benefits, the equipment I would be working with, and so on. Having satisfied myself that I had thoroughly described my ideal job, I filed the paper away and forgot about it.

A year or so later, I was looking trough my files and found that piece of paper again. I read it and was surprised to find that at least about 75% of my ideal job description had actually become reality. Ever since then I have become a great believer in writing down my desires for the future and writing them in such a way as if they had already come true. And I believe that a large part of achieving a better future is to visualize that future and describe it in writing.

Try it - the results may surprise you!

Great, Theo, I recommend it.

Very true indeed - Goals must be written down. Just do list down your daily do list it works as at the end of the day you check yourself and see how many done and how many not done. The same for week, month, etc, Do not forget to qualify it to see level of attainment after every session. Some you have to carry forward...

Yes these to do lists can be very effective in getting thigs done. Thank you.

When we write it down, it doubly imprints on us...
