    What is stress?

    Stress is ……………..

      ·The body’s reaction to a demand

·A state of severe physiological and psychological tension

      ·Preparation for fight or flight

·The beginning of a number of diseases

    Stress is not …………

·Necessarily bad since , at times it helps the person reach desired goals

      ·Anxiety

      ·Fear

·The direct cause of disease although it frequently contributes to its development

Stress can be positive or negative. Unfortunately only its negative side tends to be emphasized. One definition shows that stress does not always carry negative connotations.

    A Definition of stress

What does the word stress means?

The Webster dictionary gives several meanings for the word. One definition for the verbal form is “to subject to physical stress.”

As a noun the most common definition is “the state or condition of strain and intense strain. Another meaning define stress as “to draw tight or to press together.”

From this we can see that stress may simply mean being subjected to external force or pressure and can be either positive or negative depending upon the effect of the external force. However often the underlying negative meaning associated with distress is attached to the word.

    The stages of stress

Stress does not sneak up on its victim capturing him or her in an unpredictable surprise attack.

Fortunately we are endowed with the ability to detect a series of signals which indicate danger. Stress passes through three stages from the time it appears until it reaches its most acute level.

    1. The alarm stage

This phase consist of a clear warning that a stress agent is present. Physical reactions are the first to appear. They warn us that we need to be on our guard. Once we are aware of a potential stressful situation we can take measures to face the problem and to solve it. In this case the result of stress never materializes.

    2. The resistance stage

When stress extends beyond the alarm stage we enter into the resistance stage. When we get to this stage we become frustrated and realize that we are beginning to lose a lot of energy, production level becomes lower, then we need to do something to survive but we don’t know what. We begin to see this as impossible, which is the fear of failure which makes success even less likely.

    3. The Exhaustion stage

This stage is the final stage of stress. It is characterized by fatigue, anxiety, and depression. These three things may occur either sequentially or simultaneously.

Fatigue does not have anything to do with the way we feel at the end of a day’s work. In the case of stress this type of fatigue is not relieved by a good night’s sleep, it is normally accompanied by nervousness, irritability, tension and anger

We become anxious not only when faced with a stress factor but in moments which would not normally produce any anxiety.

When we refer t o depression, we mean that a person lacks the motivation necessary to find pleasure in our activities. We suffer from sleeplessness, our thoughts are pessimistic and our feelings become more and more negative. It takes a great deal of effort to escape from this stage of stress. Normally we will need external help to escape, a physician or a psychiatrist is needed.

Don’t let stress keep you back, think positive, work within your means, enjoy life, we can only live one day at a time. Remember what you can't cure you will have to endure or live with it.

This is an everyday thing for me. Luckily I know how to handle it. A big doobie and a movie :). Just joking, music and movies are how I escape from stressful reality. Once I find out what caused it, then I relax with music, think of the solution and then watch a movie. Problem solved.

That's good at least you know how to handle it but a lot of us don't. Thanks for your comments really appreciate it.
