Facebook rolled out promoted posts in 2012 and they are starting to gain more and more popularity. I have not only run several Facebook Ads campaigns, I have tested the promoted posts system as well within Facebook. My conclusion. FRAUD TRAFFIC. If you want people liking your content from countries you have never heard of, then promoting your posts to "friends of friends" is the way you should go. If you like paying to connect with people that you have already worked hard to get to "Like" you, then promote posts. However, if you want to spend your money wisely and see results with your ad spend, either enter into Google Adwords, BIngAds, and you can even try some targeted Facebook Ads.

Yeah, if I can spare some others some wasted adspend I will do so. Facebook ads on the other hand can show a bit more promise with some super targeted campaigns and relevant landers. I will discuss in more detail going forward.

I will elaborate on my findings in a future post. At this point from all my tests I don't recommend it unless you are running some unique tests with some potentially viral stuff on FB (and you have a budget for it).

Gosh Kyle, thanks so much for taking the time (and spending the money!) to use the promoted posts nonsense, and to run Facebook Ads campaigns. This way you speak from personal experience not prejudice.

I wasn't planning to go anywhere near that stuff, and I thank you for re-affirming that stance.

I wonder why promoted posts are increasing in popularity? Maybe it's just a spike of early interest---the latest BSO---and it will meet its demise when people see it for what it is.

Because people think they are getting results. They tend to equate "likes" or "comments" to business, when in actuality business = business. Promoted posts lead to very little engagement, meaningless likes, and not a lot of bang for your buck. There are much better mediums out there in the "paid" world to get high quality and targeted traffic...starting with Google and Bing.

Or find high traffic media buys.

I wish Facebook did not exist.

I am quite sure one day my wish will come true.

Yeah, I wouldn't bank on it anytime soon though. They will feel the slow fizzle like myspace does when something better comes along. People are definitely diversifying their social activities, I know most females have moved a good deal of their social activity to instagram these days.

Of course Shawn, you will see people gloating about the exposure they are getting from their promoted posts, but I can tell you that the traffic is absolute garbage. I have always taken a stance that is against promoted posts because they are forcing people to pay to connect with people that have "requested" to connect with them by "liking" their fan page.

Facebook, trying to make money on ever turn is going to be the demise of their business.
