My Business Plan - What, Why and How?

I've written my business plan, now what? Well, for one thing, I know what to focus on with regards to my business needs.

The What!

I now have a plan that defines my "what." I now know what I am doing. I know what my business name is. I know what my branding will be. I know what my target audience is. Understanding my audience dictates my style of writing. Though I am a technical professional, my audience will be the non-technical, possibly even technophobic! Knowing this prevents me from writing in my usual geek format. My writing style will be adjusted to explain technical terms in a friendly informal way using everyday terminology. "Plug it into the USB port" is of no help to people who do not know what a USB is, or even what is meant by a port (in this context).

For many years I have been the go-to person to resolve technical problems relating to computers, specifically software. My current position is the IT Technical Manager of a financial services company. I shoulder the responsibility of being the go-to person when things go wrong. We are a daily business, and by the end of the day, we must complete all financial transactions. Our clients not being paid is not an option!

The Why!

Why am I doing this? To answer this takes some deep thought. I love logic puzzles. I'm good at these. I like computers. They are sophisticated machines, but the logic is simple. They are fast but straightforward. Computers are made up of billions if not trillions of switches. Each switch can either be "On" or "Off" There is no other state. I like this simple life. Reminds me of Yoda in the Star Wars, speaking to Luke - "Do or do not, there is no try"! So it is with machines. Each decision flows one way or another depending on the lay of the switch. It's either "On" or "Off" there is no "Maybe"! Sigh, if only life was like this.

Not everyone thinks the same way that I do, thankfully. For many people, computers are reluctant companions. When they work, everything is good with the world. But when these machines start to show signs of independence, then it can be misery for the owner of that machine.

I aim to identify common Windows computer problems faced by non-technical people, and in simple, non-threatening language, explain the cause of the problem and the possible solution.

The How!

There will be a call-to-action link on my website to subscribe to my monthly newsletter. My newsletter will be an informal letter based on the news and my views on the IT world as it happens.

I plan to focus on writing informative and helpful articles to common Windows computer problems. My goal is to write 50 articles over the next twelve months. I am as yet, undecided as to whether I should wait until I have completed my goal before monetizing my website.

It is my plan, to start monetizing my website after twelve months via Amazon Affiliates. It is also my goal to write a book based on the 50+ articles written during the first year and self-publish this via Amazon.

In year two, I feel there should be sufficient interest in my site to warrant using Google Adsense.

During year three, I have two aims. The first is to write a second book - volume 2 of my first book. My second goal is to write a Windows desktop app to help the long-suffering non-technical person resolve common Windows problems as they occur. This task I may well farm out to a third-party.

Great to have a plan Paul. Just a word of caution - if your intention is to re-purpose the 50 articles from your website into a Kindle book, Amazon will flag you for duplicate content, as they do not like Kindle books to be the same content as what you can read somewhere out on the internet.

You would need to rewrite them all!

Thanks for the tip, Jon.

A good practice to establish your business bearings!

Thanks, Michael.

That looks like a real plan, when you ever need illogical advice, ask a woman;)

Thanks, Loes. I'll remember that. :)

To put the record straight; one of the most talented computer programmers I have ever had the privilege of working with, was a woman!

We are still "undersized"

I couldn't agree more, Loes. And do not forget, the first ever computer programmer was a woman - Ada Lovelace.

Thanks, I can remember that name, my oldest sister is called Ada too;)
