A fellow member who I'm PMing with to help him out went to look at my website, and happened to click on my text link on a post, that lead to the main concentrated page for shopping.

That link did NOT lead there, but to another post that didn't have the option to shop!

It turns out that all the text links ended up being wrong, leading to the wrong post and not the proper page. This was NOT like that at all when I added them.

I had to go into edit for each page and post for the women's line, highlighted the link, clicked on edit there and replaced ALL 15 of them. The men's links were fine, leading to the men's concentrated page.

For some reason...
'Women's Purses and Handbags' PAGE
got changed too ..
'Purses and Handbags'
leading to...
'Welcome to Women's and Men's Bags' POST?

Purses and handbags is NOT in 'Welcome to Women's and Men's Bags'.

I don't even have a URL ending with 'purses and handbags'. I don't understand what happened! that it lead to the one I just mentioned. 'women's and men's' is not the same.

Now, I have to go through ALL of my comments for the women's pages and posts to change any text links I have there.

I always check my banners but didn't think to check my text links because they were all correct!

Thanks again Steve for clicking on a couple of text links finding this huge error!

Off I go to check all the comments! and it's 1:30 am here :(

Update

It makes sense that it must have been the recent WordPress update as Sanna suggested. It has to be a glitch for it to happen that way with that URL not even existing, then ending up on another post. From now on I'm going to go through my whole website after any updates!

It dawned on me that I backed up my website the other day and have copies downloaded on my laptop and memory stick. They aren't even good now with this issue. I need to check my comments which I haven't yet, then back up my website all over again deleting the last one.

Hi Patsy,
You might want to consider using a child theme. There is plenty of information about this online. I'm thinking about it myself. Some of the research I have done suggests that it is a good idea to work on the child theme under the parent theme. That way when updates occur to the parent theme - the child theme content links, etc. does not change.

I still have to learn a lot more about it. I am no expert, but it sounds like that might be a good solution for you so you don't have to chase down problems that were created by the latest update.

Hi Wendy, it's on my list to add a child theme.

I watched a tutorial by Marion a while back and it looks so complicated so I left it.

I need to go investigate this again..thanks for the reminder :)

Here you go my friend, try this one. https://wordpress.org/plugins/child-theme-configurator/ I use it and it only takes a few moments to set up. Download and install, allow all default settings for installation, then in Step 7 you can name the child theme. For one of my premium themes called Proper, I named the child theme WavePro. Name it whatever you like, it shows up in your dashboard only, so parent theme updates don't overwrite your edits. Still wise to check the links after WP updates tho. ;-)

Hi Gaylene, you are welcome.

It is sorted out, I just need to check the links in my comments now the back up my website. The last backup is no good now.

The only links I wasn't checking were the 'text' ones. They were fine and I'm sure it was the recent update for Wordpress.

I have heard enough times how updates for plugins can mess up our websites..so I need to check after each update.

Hi Nick you are welcome, I always share the best ha!

This one is very upsetting and looks like it's from the recent WordPress update. I've heard over the months how plugin updates can mess up our websites.

This is so strange the way the link lead to a URL I don't have then ended up on another post. I did a recent backup on my website and it's obviously no good.

I think we need to check every link including the 'text links more often.

Thank goodness you caught this. Imagine the traffic that was being wasted going to somewhere they were not expecting to go...

Not only that, if they DID buy something, you would not get credit for it likely!

The lesson for me is to check the links! I must do so again, it has been awhile. I will do this 2-3 times during a product launch, but I neglect it too much thereafter...

Thanks for the reminder!

Cheers!

Hi Dave, you are welcome.

I do check the banners but not the text links. When I add them to a new post they are fine.

I've heard over the months how updated plugins can wreak havoc on our websites and I'm pretty sure this happened after the recent WordPress update. It's how strange for the link to go to a URL I don't have that ended up on another post. It was an update that caused this glitch.

I still haven't checked my comments and my recent website backup is no good.

Hi Patsy
Hope you are well.

I had the same on my website.
Additionally one of the websites I was promoting was compromised and taken down so I lost quite a bit of content like the 1500 word review and other promotional pieces and referral links.

Always have to work around these things :)

Hi Kamil, I am 'ok' thanks, kind of upset still!
I hope you are doing awesome :D

Do you backup your website regularly?
This is why I removed my website from my profile, I was spammed enough. No one needs to see it.

Every time I publish a post, I copy and paste it to an email sending it to me! Then I print it out and put them in a protective sleeve and in a binder. My binder is full! Just in case someone does something stupid like steals my stuff.

It may be a good idea to protect your hard work and do this.

Maybe not awesome but good enough to still stand straight! LOL :p

Don't let it upset you Patsy and keep going forward.
Have had so many downfalls here I lost track.

I do backup my site regularly yes.
Have not thought of actually printing out my website but this is a brilliant idea I think Patsy! In fact, this could be a great business opportunity if you have the means and equipment of printing out people's websites.

Best regards,
Kamil

Hi Kamily I'm good now thanks.
I went through all of my comments, fixed them then checked all the posts again and actually found 1 I missed to correct. It's all behind me now.

I'm glad I brought up how I print mine out and have them in a binder. I checked and still have pictures I took to show a member a while back. I'll send you one :)

I highlight and copy the post, paste it to my open office text document and print it out. You will notice the images are not exaclty as you copied them, so if an image is in the center it will end up on the left hand side but it doesn't matter as long as you have the information. Then I wait for the ink to dry and place them in a protector sleeve.

This is an awesome business oportunity for sure, keep in mind the images aren't place the same way.

Have a great weekend!

Really cool! ^^,
Think you have just inspired me to get the printer out the cupboard and do the same lol.

I believe there is even a scanning software that allows you to grab the text and edit it if you wish so this really does have multiple benefits.
Reply
PatsyC Premium
Hi Kamil, my printer is also a scanner. Not sure if it will work since I have to copy and paste the post to a word document, then print it out.

Yes, dust off that printer, you should take out your ink cartridges and gently shake them since they have been sitting for a while and make sure you have enough ink in black and white + color.

Have fun!

Then I deleted the the last back up and did a new one. It's behind me now and I should add a child theme.. but it looks complicated. Bob left me a link and it's different that the one Marion has.

I need to look into that.

The update I'm referring to is not for our website work. It has nothing to do with updating our posts.

It's an update made for WordPress. We recently had one and now we have the 4.8.2 version. That kind of update.

I have read over the months how updates like these for WordPress, and even for our own themes can cause problems on our website and this is what happened. There was a glitch and it messed up my text links for just the women's page.

Sometimes the WP updates will mess with your links, as do some Plugin updates from time to time. I've also noticed that these updates can also affect the CSS I've added to sites. On the one site, I added CSS to change the header font, color, and shadow, and when a WP update comes through, the header reverts back to default. (And yes, I use child themes on all my sites.) The updates don't remove the CSS, and all I have to do is go back into Customizer and update the CSS settings and voila, all good again. But I (we) learned the hard way to check links after updates. Glad you were able to restore everything!

I hear ya girl, sometimes the site babysitting can consume too much time! lol I manage about 20 sites elsewhere, prior to coming aboard with WA. So I start Monday morning with some coffee and login to each site and perform whatever updates are required. As far as the links, I toss some admin work like that to a high school student for her to check for me on a weekly basis. Some extra money for her, less headache for me. I live at the beach, so you can guess where I'd prefer to spend my time. Checking links or checking surf? haha

I think it's the last WordPress update that caused a glitch and messed them up. It only makes sense.

It's just the ones leading to the Women's page and....the strange way the link went to a URL I don't even have...to find it ended up on a totally different page.

I can't say how your links ended up like that, but over the years I've been working with websites I have several times caused something like that myself because of working too fast, being distracted by something, not knowing what I was doing or being too tired so that I wasn't really in control of my actions anymore. ;) Sometimes weird things happen indirectly after something I have done. WP is a very complex "structure".

But your case sounds a bit odd. Hard to say what has happened really. It's always possible that a WordPress update has caused an error. Personally I have never had a WordPress database break after updating WP, and I've been working with WP for many years. But it doesn't mean it can't happen to others.

I said this because it most probably isn't some hacker who has broken into your site, even though links changing by themselves isn't definitely normal. I feel like I'm just blabbering here, as you didn't even really ask for advice. But the web developer in me is always interested in these strange cases when something happens without apparent reason. :)

Hope your links are now fixed and it's just a one-off thing.
Reply
PatsyC Premium
Hi Sanna, I never go too fast or get distracted. When I do work like this I'm very focused and picky. Besides, that's a lot of pages and posts including ones from last March!

I think it must have been a glitch and it may have been the recent WP update as you stated. From now on with any new updates I'll check everything over. Thanks for mentioning that.

You aren't blabbering at all, just trying to figure it out. I was actually sharing this incase someone else finds this problem and to make other's aware..so advice is welcome.

I did fix them all I just have to check the ones in my comments. Then after that, I'm going back and re-checking it all over again.
