You SUCK! You’re a FAILURE! You’ll Never Amount to Anything!

Failure 1

I took a job at my local newspaper, the Kansas City Star.

However, it wasn’t long before my editor fired me. He told me his reasons were that “I was lacking in imagination and had NO good ideas”.

I thought I’d show him.

Well that didn’t work out too well, as a few years later I went bankrupt with Laugh-O-Gram Studio, a company that produced short animated cartoons for theatres.

However, in 1923, with the help of my brother Roy, we formed our own studio.

Who Am I?

Failure 2

It was 1990, I was 25 at the time, and I happened to be waiting for a train.

And then it came to me, I had a fantastic idea for a book.

However, just a few short months later my mother died from multiple sclerosis.

I was utterly heartbroken.

Following my mother’s death I moved to Portugal to teach English. While I was there, I met a man, we got married, and in 1993 I gave birth to a daughter.

However, my marriage was a strenuous one, and eventually we got divorced.

I moved to Edinburgh at the end of 1993 to live with my sister.

But, I had never forgotten my book idea, although over those 3 years I had only completed 3 chapters.

I eventually finished writing the book in 1995, so it took me a total of 5 years from idea to completion, but I guess life just got in the way.

I found an agent and was excited about getting my book published.

That excitement didn’t last long, as I was rejected by 12 major publishing houses.

Bloomsbury finally gave my book the green light, and gave me a small advance of £1,500 in 1996.

And by 1997, now 7 years after my initial idea, my first book was finally published.

Who Am i?

Who Are These Failures?

Failure Number One formed his own studio with his brother Roy in 1923. That studio was initially named, The Disney Brothers Studio, which later became called the Walt Disney Company.

The man who “lacked imagination” and had “no good ideas” was WALT DISNEY.

This failure’s company is currently worth $130 BILLION.

Failure Number Two published her first book in 1997 and by 2004 Forbes claimed that she was the first author to become a billionaire through book writing.

The book - Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

The author - Joanne Kathleen Rowling (J.K. Rowling)

Another Couple of Failures You May Have Heard Of

Fifteen years of hard work, 5,217 prototypes (or 5,127 failures) before James Dyson created the original Dyson Vacuum Cleaner. A company that is now worth $6.2 BILLION.

1,000 failures/unsuccessful attempts before producing the lightbulb, although Thomas Edison stated, “I have not failed 1,000 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 1,000 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.”

What’s The Lesson to be Learned From This?

How do these people differ from you?

In truth, THEY DON’T.

They simply showed a quality that helped them to succeed - perseverance.

Have you ever shown perseverance?

You bet you have.

The first time you tried to walk as a baby I’m guessing you fell over.

You got up, tried another time, and then you fell over again and again and again. Probably hundreds of times.

Did you give up?

No, you persevered

Remember being at school trying to learn your 8 times table?

Did you get it right the first time?

Nope!

Did you give up?

No, you persevered.

Do remember getting in a car for the first time ever and thinking that you’d never pass your driving test?

What about the first time you ever switched on a computer and thought you’d never get the hang of this?

You got through it, you persevered, and you acquired new skills.

It’s the same in all walks of life.

Never give up at the first hurdle.

Never give up when you fail.

Persevere, and I promise good things will come.

“If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” - Thomas Edison.

Oh yeah, LOL.
But you're right.
Don't give up until you're dead.

It's never too late for a comeback, like the guy on the cross beside Jesus on the cross. (He got to paradise)

"Always look on the bright side of life"
De dah, de da de da de dah!

It was good to be reminded of some of the success stories of people who fought their way to brilliance in the face of ignorant criticism. Maybe even warranted, but they believed in themselves and always showed up to compete.
Garry.

Garry,

I LOVE! your sharing:

"It was good to be reminded of some of the success stories of people who fought their way to brilliance in the face of ignorant criticism. Maybe even warranted, but they believed in themselves and always showed up to compete."

That is a great definition of courage right there!

Thank you.
Cassi

LOL, what have you done Garry...

I'm going to have to watch Life of Brian tonight now, gonna have that song in my head for the rest of the day!

As Cassi quite rightly points out, anyone who continues full steam ahead, irrespective of criticism, warranted or otherwise, is a courageous soul.

One who deserves success in my mind.

Partha

And one who WILL achieve success, Partha!

I am a HUGE Life of Brian fan.
If you haven't seen it yet, you definitely should!

I trust that all is well.

Cassi

What an excellent pep talk Partha. The overriding factor as I see it is these individuals totally believed that they would succeed. They had passion for what they were doing. Hence, those failures were just stepping stones towards their eventual goal. I don't think they had a date planned when they would make their breakthroughs. They just happened when the time was right.

The lesson here is that we have to embrace failure as being part of the process and journey to success. Those who give up probably had little faith in themselves and lacked the desire and passion to help them weather their failures.

I have almost completed reading Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and he teaches what we must do in order to arm ourselves to handle the tough journey to success. Countless others followed him who imparted the same message in their own unique ways. But they all had the same thing in common. Never give up.

Of course it helps to learn from these mistakes.

Thanks for this thoughtful post.

Edwin

Thank you so much for such a wonderful reply Edwin.

I think you've hit the nail on the head by using the word "passion".

What these indivudals achieved definitely shows that they had passion and desire above all else.

Well if you're almost at the end of Think and Grow Rich, and you enjoy that classical style of personal development, may I also suggest Dale Carnegie's smash-hits:

How To Win Friends and Influence People
How To Stop Worrying And Start Living.

Enjoy
Partha

Thanks for your book suggestions Partha. When I was a kid my mom gave me Dale Carnegie's How ti win friends book. I didn't read it. Just like I didn't read TAGR until now. You may wonder why so.

My attention span is very short. When I read a book my mind wanders. Suddenly I notice that I had read several pages and had no idea what I had read. Back to where my mind wandered and started reading again. This pattern keeps repeating itself. Hence I have not read many books, sad to say. I even tried audio books. I did better, but my mind still wanders.

This time around I gave myself a schedule where I read one chapter a week and sheared lessons learned with the group. And it worked. Perhaps I will do that with these other books.

But first, I am going to read it again with a yellow marker. And highlight about twp phrases a page that make key points. I want to make sure that I totally absorb and implement the lessons in TAGR before moving on to other books.

Thanks for making the suggestions.

Cheers.

Edwin

I have a morning routine where I typically do about 3 or 4 things to a timer.

Why do I use a timer?

Because I too have a short attention span 😂😂

One of these things is reading. I just set a timer, depending on how I feel, anywhere between 5-30 minutes.

If it's a 5 minute day. I'll just pick one or two pages that appeals to me in a book and read them a couple of times.

Nowadays, I hardly ever read a book from cover to cover, as is conventional.

I'll still read the entire book, but I may start in the middle chapters I may start at the end... Who knows!

Partha

Hi Partha, this is an excellent post, very motivating. I love stories of people who succeeded after many failures and interesting people in general.
I've always been a warrior. When I wanted to get in good shape when I was 20, I started to go to gym and did workout for several years, my friends were admiring my perseverance and the results :).
There were many more achievements later on. The thing is if you have many options or many talents, it's rather about choice. And as I found recently, I have to listen to my intuition and do what I really love, so I'm doing that.

I love your style of writing, it's very engaging. You are a talented writer!
Lenka

Hi Lenka,

Oh yes. I know what that's like. I've often approached things with the exact same mentality, although I can be prone to odd-wobble every now and then.

I'm really please to hear that. You do have many talents, that much is obvious and very clear, and I'm glad that you are finally doing something that you really love.

You'll be a great success at whatever you put your mind to, I'm sure of it.

Oh, and thank you so much for your kind compliment. How lovely.

Partha

Very inspiring message, Patha! I love hearing stories like these. There are so many of them because people do persevere!

I especially liked your final quote, “If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” - Thomas Edison.

I am ready to be stounded!

With 2020 Vision,
Karin 😎

Hi Karin,

Thanks for your comments.

Yes, I completely agree, that Thomas Edison quote is something I regularly need to remind myself.

Partha

When someone that you are close to tells you these things, it is the worse feeling ever!

Indeed Leslie.
