Do NOT Read This if You’re EASILY Offended

Okay, first things first - I just know that there are some of you who are perhaps easily offended, and yet you still decided to click on the title and start reading this blog post.

Even though you were forewarned, yet your curiosity got the better of you.

You just couldn’t help yourself could you?

Shame on YOU.

Yes YOU, I’m talking to YOU.

Don’t look behind you. Don’t cower away. And DON’T even think about hitting that back button on your browser to run off.

You’ve been caught.

You’re here now.

You’re easily offended, but you just couldn’t do as you were told.

So, in keeping with the title of this post I feel it is my duty to add something that some may find offensive.

I notice many people, Wealthy Affiliates or otherwise, love to begin a blog post with a motivational phrase or saying, typically by a historical character or present-day celebrity.

Therefore, I shall follow suit.

However, due to extreme budget cuts (and the lack of “motivational phrase research”) you’ll have to make do with a saying created and first said by ME.

Apologies for my lack of celebrity status, although I have seen this phrase repeated numerous times on the World Wide Web, ever since its inception (it’s mine and don’t let anybody tell you any different).

Without further ado (and this is as offensive as this post is going to get - but you were WARNED).

Have You Ever Noticed That People Just Can’t Do As They’re Told?

It’s true isn’t it?

If we’re warned or specifically told not to do something, 9 times out of ten we’re just going to go ahead and do it anyway,

I can’t be the only one who sees a “WET PAINT” sign and just has to touch it.

I’ve been warned, there is no rhyme nor reason for me to go anywhere said painted object, and yet I wander over casually and touch it.

I then make a face like an upset 3-year old child, bottom lip jutted out, close to tears, frowning eyes and forehead, as I hold my hand out for all to see - of course, covered in paint.

I remember at a family barbeque many years ago, my mother told me not to touch the coals. They were HOT and they would BURN.

5 hours in A&E (ER to my friends across the Atlantic) and my inability to hold my burger, never mind eat it, proved to me that she was possibly right.

Never mind curiosity killing the cat, the BBQ almost destroyed Partha.

Where Am I Going With This?

From providing Site Comments here at WA I’ve noticed many of my friends/colleagues have review sites, as in the vast majority of their content is product reviews. This seems to be especially true within the MMO niche.

When you’re reviewing that many products you’re going to come across many Stinkers.

However, I love the fact that they keep it real, are extremely detailed and honest in their reviews, and do not recommend that anyone purchases these products.

Wealthy Affiliate is then ALWAYS offered as a suitable alternative.

With that said, a recent chat with someone who shall remain nameless, LOL, and they revealed that even some of the worst products that they review, products that they give a definite thumbs down, products they have given a rating of 0 or 1 out of Ten, have provided them with some regular sales.

PEOPLE JUST WON’T DO AS THEY’RE TOLD.

It’s Human Nature

I guess you could say that it’s human nature that we often do things that we are told not to do.

We rebel.

We go against general consensus.

We decide that we probably know better.

Now I’m not suggesting you go out there and find the very worst products available in your niche and then start filling your sites with reviews of these anomalies, BUT..

My nameless friend also revealed that a fair few of these “people who didn’t do as they were told” and purchased the dross, returned a few weeks later, subscribed to his email list, and in some cases even reached out via email and contacted him looking for suggestions.

I believe they did this because they could see just how honest and helpful the website owner was trying to be and therefore felt as though they could trust him.

And isn’t that what we are all eventually aiming for?

We typically produce content in the positive when it comes to our articles, blog posts, social media sharing, videos, etc. but how often do you focus on the negative?

Have you ever produced “Wet Paint - Do Not Touch” content?

Just looking at things from a different perspective.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for reading (even those of you who I specifically told not to read this, Haha).

Partha,

You may have hit upon the secret to success. Find out what successful people do and tell others not to do those things.

Regarding product reviews. in one of his webinars on product reviews, Jay instructed us to use affiliate links of products we give high marks for as well as low marks, for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

People often make up their pwn minds to buy a product regardless what the reviews state.

Thanks for a very good article that uses human reverse psychology.

Cheers.

Click bait!

The headline is the fishing hook and there are plenty of fish in the sea. I think that you raise a very valid point and I think it was Kyle that originally said; " don't leave crumbs on the table."

So with the dump and pump review process, by having links for the product that is being reviewed and also your value proposition you have if you like two bites at the cherry.

If someone is in the market to buy, they usually start the process by searching, looking for reviews on the product or service. Even if the review raises red flags and depending on the level of cognitive dissonance they may still go ahead and make the purchase.

Affiliates are making fortunes promoting the plerthra of products in the MMO niche that flood from the JVzoo and Warrior platforms.

It is one of the weird dichotomies of the online world.

It all starts with that review.

Good way of getting your point across Partha.

Alex

Hi Partha, you offer an amazing perspective with this post. And as always, you are fun.
I have to say I've been thinking about something related to this as I found out that my absolutely best performing article according to GSC is one about a skin syndrome that looks horrible and I even don't know why I decided to research this topic and write about it. But so many people are looking for a remedy (and in Jaaxy, it was saying 0!).
We definitely should focus more on the negative, even if we, being WAers, are positive human beings :)
Thanks for this food for thoughts,
Lenka

Thank you Lenka, always lovely to hear from you.

I think it was Cassi that I mentioned to below - as human beings we're almost wired to look for the negative. It's related to our earliest ancestors "fight or flight" mode.

So, it's almost as though we expect something terrible to happen or the worst possible scenario to occur.

In a way being told not to do something evokes pretty much the same type of emotional response.

However, even as a learned behaviour or an ingrained belief this "negative outlook" can be changed to a positive vibe.

Now knowing your story, you're a shining example of this.

Thank you
Partha

Thank you Partha,
A great article indeed.
I must admit I am rarely offended so I enjoy reading articles that grab my attention and yours did. Also, I am the one that reads reviews and acknowledges the bad ones but would not deliberately go to a restaurant on a bad review.
However, I do rant about injustices and things that I believe are wrong so perhaps I need to use your article in the same way.
Great food for thought
Imelda

Thank you Imelda.

I hear you.

I tend to be fairly stubborn myself, so if I believe that something isn't right or an injustice has been served, I'm usually the first one to open my mouth.

However, I am a work in progress and I'm definitely getting better at trying to engage my brain before my mouth, LOL.

Partha

I couldn´t help myself, Partha! The temptation got the best of me...😄.

You have a very valid point. Firstly, stir the curiosity with a great title like you have done in this post is genius in action :-)

Bu , too the essence of your post; I haven´t written many reviews yet, but I think you have a very good idea to also do review of "stinkers" as well. And, making sure that the reviews are verifiable.

I know from my own experience that I would come back to the same source, which told me "don´t do it", and ask for advice on other products/services.

-Roy-

That makes perfect sense Roy.

I think we all suffer a little from "don't tell me what to do" syndrome.

However, as you say if we were warned and then got burned, we're more than likely to return the "knowledgeable source" for advice afterwards.
