DISCLAIMER No.1: It's Loooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnggggggg

DISCLAIMER No.2: As usual, all of my posts should carry a disclaimer. This is simply my opinion, and how I see it. This is what works for me. However, this is NOT the only way of doing things. If you are completely new to Internet Marketing there is no greater advice I can give than following the training step-by-step.

DISCLAIMER No.3: If you’re looking for a loving, sweet, and heartfelt blog that will make you feel all warm inside, this ain’t it. This is me giving you a proverbial kick in the backside. Do I care? Yes, of course I do. I wouldn’t give so much of my time (in private) to many, many, many of you if I didn’t care. But, be forewarned, I don’t do motivation, and I definitely don’t do hearts and flowers.

How I See Things

Partha: It’s All About Traffic. Blogging = Writing. Eat, WRITE, Sleep, Repeat. Eat, WRITE, Sleep, Repeat.

Everyone Else: NO. It’s all about sales conversions, funnels, seller intent, crafting a great call to action, creating a buzz, building excitement, leaving them wanting more, precision posting of emails, pre-selling your target audience, having the perfect ratio of product reviews, interacting on as many platforms as possible, getting your ratio of affiliate links right, pinpointing the reader hotspots in your articles, interacting in mastermind groups, repurposing my content to reach a wider market via 37 different platforms, designing my logo, focusing on my brand, beautifying my website, working on my bounce rate.

Partha:

Stop Overcomplicating Things

You wouldn’t get a Partha blog post without a hint of sarcasm.

However, what I’ve mentioned above is ALL perfectly feasible.

These are all things you COULD do.

But for me, this all seems like a huge amount of work that stops me from writing.

My process is simple.

Find out the questions people are asking in your niche. Answer those questions by way of an article.

Whether that article is 750 words long or 15,000, it doesn’t matter.

ANSWER THE SEARCHER’S QUERY.

My method is to create a huge amount of articles, and what follows is typically a huge amount of traffic.

In the time it takes you to do one of the things above I’ve written another article.

You can actually create a highly successful blog, in terms of traffic and income, by JUST WRITING ARTICLES.

You don’t need to do anything else (again this is simply ONE method for success, there are thousands of ways to do this).

Work the Inverted Pyramid

I've had a LOT of members contact me over the past few months.

Many of you have been working on this for many months, even over a year, or two years.

And I hear the same thing - I’m not really getting any traffic.

It really does make me feel so sad, it actually hurts me inside.

Traffic is your lifeline. Traffic is your business.

If no-one’s visiting your website, I don’t care how fantastic your content is, no-one’s ever going to see it.

I like to create content in what I like to call an “inverted pyramid” fashion.

By this I mean that the first few articles (40 - I love the number 40, it’s not a magic number, I just like it) are solely focused on answering questions that literally NO-ONE ELSE IN MY NICHE IS FOCUSING ON.

So, I am looking at keywords, phrases, article topics, etc. that have almost no competition.

If you think about it, when you use a keyword tool to find a keyword, you are specifically looking for something with fairly low competition, but some traffic.

However, considering there are 7.5 million blog posts published a day, in a vast array of niches and topics, a LOT of the keywords you are targeting will already have articles written and ranking.

Do you not think everyone else is using a keyword tool to find the SAME phrases as you?

This is why I always say CHECK YOUR COMPETITION ON PAGE ONE OF GOOGLE.

You want to see “User-Generated Content” ranking on page one.

You want to see Forums, Quora, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Discussion Groups, etc.

If you’re not seeing any of these on page one of Google you have picked a competitive topic to write about.

I’m not saying that you can’t write these articles, but it may take you 8 months, 12 months, 24 months, 36 months, to even get your first visitor.

Your aim is to write an article that will rank almost immediately.

If it is a question-type article that you have found using the methods I speak about using Google Autosuggest, these are REAL questions asked by REAL people.

Partha’s Keyword Research Part 1

Partha’s Keyword Research Part 2

If people are asking these questions that means there is traffic.

Don’t ask me how much traffic, I have no idea.

However, the higher a phrase is in the Google Autosuggest search results, the more “popular” the phrase is (it has more traffic).

But initially focus on the phrases that have hardly any competition on page one (don’t worry about the traffic potential - yeah, I said it, I target ZERO traffic keywords and receive LOTS of traffic).

I have already proven how keywords that have ZERO traffic according to Jaaxy (and other keyword tools) are providing me with 100s and 1000s of visitors a month (I have linked to that blog post below).

Your aim is to create AUTHORITY on your website as quickly as possible.

If I can get 40 articles ranking at position 1,2, and 3, I have created this authority.

As I’ve explained, one article can rank for 100s or 1000s of different keywords.

So, if I’ve ranked for a “No Traffic” keyword I will eventually rank for many others.

That said, using Google Autosuggest for keyword research will reveal REAL phrases that REAL people are searching for, i.e. there is traffic (and LOTS of it).

Start with ridiculously easy keywords and phrases to rank for (even if Jaaxy says there’s no traffic), and build your pyramid from the point to the base (target harder and higher traffic keywords once you have some authority).

Stop Trying to Sell

Do you like being sold to?

I certainly don’t.

It’s human nature to veer away from someone purposely trying to sell something to you.

I know WA is focused on affiliate marketing, so this involves “selling”, but it’s not the only way to earn an income.

You all know where to find the website I’m currently working on.

So, you can see the exact method I am using.

The vast majority of my articles are informational in nature and answering questions I have found via Google Autosuggest.

Now, in the early stages of the training Kyle will introduce you to the customer purchase lifecycle.

Basically, if someone is typing a product name + review into Google (or other search engine) they are quite near to the “buying phase” of the customer purchase lifecycle.

They want to know more about the product and may purchase it.

That said, have you ever noticed that even if you’re ranking 1,2, or 3 for your product review, you’re not receiving a great deal of traffic?

Well, unless the product is extremely well-known or famous that is.

So, what I do is to write informational articles that are NOT PRODUCT OR SALES FOCUSED and I’ll link to my product review somewhere in that article.

In effect, I am sending even more traffic to the product review than it will typically get ranked at number one.

As the vast majority of my articles are information-based, I can also add affiliate links to my informational articles if I want.

I still have less than 20% of my articles containing an affiliate link.

I will write a short paragraph within my informational article talking about a specific product that relates to the “problem” that my reader is having and then provide an affiliate link.

Just as an example, I have now been working on this website for exactly 1 year and 2 weeks now.

I have 75 product reviews on the website, and over 250 informational articles.

Out of those 75 product reviews the one PRODUCT that has produced the most income is “Unlock Your Glutes”.

I wrote the article on 20th September 2020.

I’ve had 73 sales of the product totalling $2,610.48 (I wish the other 74 reviews were producing this amount of income, but they’re not. 3 are fairly close, another 6 are just over 50% of this, and the rest have either produced a sporadic sale or two, or nothing at all, BUT I know with time ALL the product reviews will RANK well, and MAY produce regular sales).

Anyway, out of these 73 sales, 41 have come directly from the product review totalling $1,387.04.

HOWEVER, the other 32 sales totalling $1,223.44 (also some upsells included in this amount) have come from an article titled, “Why Don’t I Feel Squats in My Glutes?”

This is an informational article with NO SELLING INTENT. I simply link directly to the product within the article.

My product review averages around 300 visitors a month.

The informational article (WITH NO SELLING INTENT) averages around 1,700 visitors a month.

So, even without selling anything (well, not really) this article has still produced income (plus, the informational article was only written on January 24th 2021).

You CAN MAKE MONEY WITHOUT SELLING (More on this in a moment).

Stop Allowing The Machines (Software) to Control You

I’ve spoken of this many times before and I have two specific WA blog posts that focus more on this:

Allow Me to Blow Your SEO Mind

Allow Me to Blow Your Keyword Research Mind

The first blog posts focuses on your SEO plugin.

I will repeat, “I’ve never met anyone making good money that spends time thinking about what their SEO plugin thinks about their article”.

Basically, scoring 100/100 on your SEO plugin or hitting a green light will NOT magically catapult you to number one ranking.

In fact, it may even have the opposite effect because your writing is simply too robotic.

Write for human beings, don’t write to satisfy a piece of software.

The next blog post I’ve mentioned was about how many of us have become a slave to a keyword tool.

“Jaaxy tells me the QSR is 15, so I MUST write the article and I will definitely rank”.

WRONG!!

I’ve already mentioned that you should ALWAYS check page one of Google for your competition.

And you want to see USER-GENERATED CONTENT.

You see this, you WILL rank.

Low QSR or low competition on a keyword tool simply means that not many articles HAVE INCLUDED THAT EXACT PHRASE WITH THE WORDS IN THAT EXACT ORDER.

That doesn’t mean there aren't 10,000,000 other websites included in the search results for that specific keyword.

I have provided proof in the keyword article above of how much traffic two different articles are receiving.

One article was written using data from a keyword tool and has NO traffic.

The other article was written using Google Autosuggest, had ZERO traffic stats according to a keyword tool, and hit 500 visitors in a month in 4 months.

WRITE FOR HUMANS NOT MACHINES.

If You’re NOT Getting 10,000+ Visitors Per Month After One Year You’re Doing Something Wrong

That’s a BOLD statement isn’t it?

But, I truly believe this.

I will make a couple of exceptions.

Firstly, if you’re completely new to this there is a massive learning curve - 18-24 months is fine.

Secondly, if you have a website that is solely based around product reviews - as I’ve mentioned, unless the product is well-known, you won’t be getting a great deal of traffic per article.

Anything else, something’s not right.

Okay, perhaps you’re completely doing something wrong, but I would personally expect to be hitting the 20,000 to 30,000 visitors a month mark by the end of the first year.

If I’m not then there are a few things I would look at:

I’m writing the wrong types of articles (focus on answering QUESTIONS that people in your niche are asking)

How to Research, Structure & Write an Article

I’m not checking page one competition - I’ve covered this and I AM WILLING TO BET that most people who are not getting at least a few thousands visitors a month after a year are making this mistake, e.g. “Jaaxy told me the QSR is low, so I’m writing the article” - ALWAYS CHECK PAGE ONE - PLEEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSSEEEE

My niche is too broad - I don’t actually 100% agree with this. I will typically focus on a subject matter rather than a niche. But I’m looking to add at least a few thousand articles within a few years to a website.

So, if my niche audience is focused on one-legged pirates who have a parrot called Old Fluff (I had to get that in somewhere in this post, Hahaha), I’m eventually going to run out of article ideas. Therefore, I will focus on pirates in general, but once I get to 500, 1,000, 1,500 articles I’ll be thankful that I still have things to write about (BTW, I did mention this is the method I focus on, just writing, writing, writing, as I said, it’s NOT the only way, just my preferred way)

I haven’t written enough - Okay, I understand that not everyone is going to produce 300-500 articles per year. So, if you are getting some traffic from what you’ve currently produced then you’re heading in the right direction, it will just take you longer to get there.

BUT, if you’ve written less than 100 articles in a year, you’re not trying hard enough.

And REMEMBER they have to be the right types of articles too.

I’ve mentioned before that I expect an AVERAGE of 600-700 views PER MONTH PER ARTICLE once an article has had 8-9 months to “mature”.

I will take 200 views per month per article as an absolute minimum (but I will know that I have some work to do on my topic and keyword research).

So, if I have written 30 articles after the first 3 months, by the end of one year (I will continue creating content every month), I would want a bare minimum of 6,000 views per month.

I would be happier to see 18,000 to 21,000 views per month.

Obviously, the aim is to have 50, 70, 100, etc. articles written in those first 3 months (and to continue writing every month thereafter).

That said, the FIRST YEAR IS ALWAYS THE HARDEST.

Not a lot happens (in terms of traffic) for the first 6 months, sometimes LONGER depending on your niche.

NOT EVERY NICHE IS THE SAME (this is why I have always steered clear of the Make Money Online niche - too many variables for me).

So, don’t ever think about giving up.

As an example, another article on the current website is “What is the Lowest Body Fat Percentage Ever?”

I wrote this article on October 20th 2020.

Do you know when it received its first ever visitor?

July 2021.

Then I had one more visitor in August.

SUDDENLY, so far in September the article has received 787 views (and we’re only halfway through the month).

This article did nothing for nearly 11 months, and suddenly BOOM.

Not every niche is the same, not every article is the same - Never Give Up.

The only people who typically don’t “Make it” are the ones who give up (sounds obvious when you say it, but approximately 90% of bloggers give up in the first year).

If You’re Getting Traffic You Can Make Money

I alluded to this earlier.

Display ads have come a long way over the past decade.

I’m not a huge fan of Google Adsense, but with good ad placement, and spending a month or two working on this you could earn a decent amount.

Ezoic has recently lowered their minimum requirement from 10,000 visitors a month to nothing.

Obviously, you still need to adhere to Google’s Advertising Policies and you will need some decent content on your site (let’s go for 40 articles again - I Love the Number 40, I have no idea why).

Ezoic has historically been terrible for site speed (as has Adsense), but they have made a lot of improvements over the last 12 months,

However, once again, it’s all about the perfect number of ads and perfect ad placement.

Everything you do online has a learning curve.

So, it may take time to learn about ad placement (If you’ve applied for Adsense and Ezoic and just “slapped” some ads on your website I guarantee you’re earning the minimum amount possible).

There are actually freelancers who work specifically on ad placement.

So, if you currently have Adsense or Ezoic on your website it may be worth your while visiting Fiverr, Upwork, Freelancer, and hiring someone to sort this out for you.

It may cost you $50-100, but it may see your revenue double, triple, or quadruple.

I do run a couple of sites with Ezoic, but I am now far more focused on using Mediavine and Adthrive.

These require 50,000 & 100,000 monthly visitors respectively.

Oh, by the way, ad revenue will obviously vary from niche to niche, but there are a couple of things you should check.

You will earn more money for US visitors (and UK, Canada, & Australia).

Check your Google Analytics to see where your visitors are coming from.

You will earn more money for desktop visitors than mobile, so once again check Google Analytics to see which devices your visitors are using.

You will earn more money from Organic (search engine) visitors than Social. You know where to check the details.

If you can hit all these checkpoints in terms of your traffic, your earning potential with display ads can be phenomenal.

It’s not unheard of to be earning $40-70 (or MORE) per 1,000 visitors (depending on your niche as well, a website about Private Jets or Yachts will earn more revenue than a website about Dog Food or Growing Tomatoes).

I will leave you to work out how much you could be earning with traffic figures of 50k, 100k, 300k, 500k and above per month.

Final Thoughts

Okay, that’s it for now.

This did initially start out as 33 tips, but no-one wants to hear me ramble on for another 10,000 words (If you do want to know the rest, let me know, and I’ll drip feed them over the course of the rest of the year).

There’s nothing particularly new in this blog, well nothing that I haven’t spoken about before.

However, I’m getting more and more disheartened members contacting me almost daily.

I really do want to reach out sometimes and just give some of you a hug, and to say it’ll be okay (Oh no, I forgot, “No hearts and flowers”, no emotion, no hugs).

In the main, the reason you’re not getting traffic or earning any income is because you’re not adhering to some or all of what I’ve mentioned here.

But, above all, DON'T GIVE UP.

Refocus yourself, write the correct types of articles, check page one competition, stop trying to sell, stop trying to do everything possible but actually writing articles.

That’s me done.

This is really interesting. I've been binge watching Passive Income Geek on YouTube and he's saying exactly what you're saying.

Having been getting it wrong (in the MMO / online marketing niche) for 18 months, am wondering if there are enough search queries like those you describe to keep going.

I am struggling to write at all at the moment. It's only a couple of accidental sales that have kept me going!

Also got started on Quora but am still debating changing niche (again!).

What do you think?

Thanks again Partha for a wonderful post!

I love reading these.

My 2take aways - I need to write more - much more!!

and the second is the need

to see "User-Generated Content" on the first page.

You want to see “User-Generated Content” ranking on page one.

You want to see Forums, Quora, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Discussion Groups, etc.

Sorry I copied and pasted to remind myself what User generated content intent included - I tended to think in terms of blogs before - and then I accidentally hit enter.

There is no way we can edit these posts, is there?

Yes, you can edit your comment. Just use the little drop-down in the right-hand corner, it looks like a downward-pointing greater than sign (it's very light and hard to see).

Zach

Hi Partha,
As long as it is from you, the length of the article won't scare me. I have read through your piece and I will have to say, it is filled with time-tested techniques that can improve an affiliate's bottom line if followed to the t! I will bookmark it for future reference.
Thanks for sharing these nuggets with the WA community

I appreciate the hug, Partha. Wait a minute, it was a virtual hug - right? I am sure you wanted to give me a hug in there somewhere.

Nobody writes this many words without having some feelings about the subject of the article or the recipient. I knew you had a soft spot.

I really do appreciate the commonsense approach you have to websites. It seems so simple when you lay it out for me.

I will write more on my sites.

I have added this article to my Partha playbook.

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Partha, are you sure you didn't sugarcoat anything? You almost went back on your promise about "no hearts and flowers".

Lucky you stopped yourself. LOL!!

One of the reasons I enjoy your posts... you get straight to the point. I am glad I am refocusing on my new website. Been working on it. And hope to start seeing something happening on it soon, but then again, it is only about 3 months old.

I wish you the best!
Bob
