The Power of the Blog

Yesterday I shared a link to a blog post on one of my Wealthy Affiliate sites to get opinions on whether the subject matter was a fit. The blog is Fit By 50, and the post was about Denny's which could loosely tie into weight loss, but I wanted to be sure I wasn't stretching too much.

I write for several other venues, and that post was merely one small piece of the overall publicity I handed out to the local Denny's, where the manager saw fit to publicly shame me for giving coupons to two fellow diners. Less than 24 hours later I had a call from the corportate office assuring me there was no policy against giving coupons to others. I posted my follow-up here:

I know that most of us are working through the WA training and putting up our blogs as a way to make money, but don't forget that there are other advantages. If your blog gets popular, you can become an influencer. I'm sure many other people have been treated badly at that Denny's, but it took someone with an online presence to get some action. Now, hopefully, no one else will ever be publicly humiliated for spreading some karma.

Keep this in mind as you write your posts, and let help guide your content, tone, and style. Income is nice, but remember, having a powerful voice and knowing that it's heard is pretty darned cool, too.

Very well put!

Amen, @parkwriter! I've experienced that, too in the short time I've been blogging in the dog world. It's really nice. Also still keeping my eye on the ball re providing helpful content and trying to do good for my readers. But I totally hear you!

I wrote a review of a product I personally used and had cancelled because I found WA. The company actually called me about the review and wanted to know if I would come back to them. I told them no and that the review was not a negative review but a review based upon my experience compared to what WA had to offer. When we write a blog online we have a voice on the web and should be used in a manner beneficial to the public. I would not write anything negative unless it was appropriate and provided details. You took the appropriate action and even provided an update. Thank you for sharing. Debbie

Hi Bard! It's a good story I left you a comment.

Sincerely

Andrea$

Thanks so much Andrea$!

Hi Barb - good for you.

As a manager, the least I would have expected would have been for him to politely request that you don't do "something", and welcome you back any time. As a corporate, they must have known about this "rogue" place for a while if they contacted you so quickly to put you right.

Your blogging must have some serious clout for them to apologise on behalf of that manager - so well done!!

I don't know Denny's - Denny is a place where my uncle and auntie and cousins stay near Stirling in Scotland - so I can only presume it's a restaurant - anyway, they've got some free publicity from your blog for this, so maybe ask them for some more vouchers ;)

All the best, Mark

Yes, it's a diner-style restaurant chain. Very cheap and generic, but good for a quick bite. I don't think they were fond of the publicity they got, but it was well justified. I have some clout because I have a decent-sized following for my Orlando theme parks column, so they didn't like all the shares my original Examiner article and Facebook posts were getting. I told the manager when I left that I'd be sharing the story in my column and via social media, and he just said good because he was sick of people handing out coupons there. He got his wish tenfold.
