Focus and Reflection

I wanted to do a short first post on two things that greatly improve my productivity and direction: Focus and Reflection.

Like many people I go through cycles of slumps and cycles of very productive periods in my life. I have found over time that their are two main catalysts for me being in a productive state. The first of which is FOCUS. If you don't have focus, it is easy to just fall in a routine of going through the motions and being swayed by whatever little distractions come up in life. If you have a clear focus with short and long term goals however, you can create and prioritize lists of things to accomplish. I myself find that I get far accomplished when I start with a medium to long range goal, and then break that down in to weekly planned goals that I use to create daily to-do lists. The difference between this and just doing things as I remember them is striking! There are many great planning books and electronic resources such as Evernote to accomplish this!

The next key to productivity and a sense of accomplishment for me is REFLECTION. One of the best books I have read on this is "The Art of Virtue" by Benjamin Franklin. Find the book here on Amazon if your interested: http://amzn.to/2cspZwd (Don't worry not an affiliate link, just a link to the Amazon page) The key to my productive cycles is when I sit back and take a hard look at what i'm doing in my day to day life. Using the 80/20 rule, what things am I doing that are producing 80% of the results, and what things am I doing that are just wasting time and/or money. This is critical to truly make your life more fulfilling and more efficient. I can't stress enough how much this helps. You really have to take a hard look at yourself and what your doing. Sometimes this isn't easy, and sometimes it's hard to recognize the flaws within ourselves. This is where asking a friend or loved one to help can be a good idea. Ask close friends, family, or a loved one to write down from their perspective the things you are good at, and are doing well, and the areas that you could improve upon. Getting perspective from somewhere other than yourself can be a real eye opener to bring out the imperfections and inefficiencys that your have blocked out of your mind. Just be ready to accept constructive criticism and use it to better yourself, but do not take it personally! Remember they are doing this to help you improve yourself!

So there are the two things that I circle back to on a regular basis to help me get back to a productive state. I hope it helps!

Comments and feedback on how you stay productive and happy would be greatly appreciated!

Good luck everyone!
