Are You Out-learned?

Good day WA Members and fellow philosophers,

I have been wondering about a statement today, that I wanted to share with you all. Don't bash me down straight away, for there is some humour to be seen in this statement as well.

"The more we learn, the more we know; the more we know, the less there is to learn"

I have no clue whether this statement is copyrighted or whether anyone else has ever come up with it. It was just something that I ran across this morning. I wondered:

What if you would be able to learn all there is in life. To put this in comparison, you learn everything there is on this platform. You are fully out-learned. What is than left to learn for you? Is it still possible to learn more?

Our brains are extremely special, for we can store yet even more. I suppose our body is not limited, but the knowledge in the world might be limited. What do you think?

When one has so much knowledge though on the other hand, perhaps one would start to do stuff with all that knowledge. Maybe we would start to categorize, organize, alphabetize all this information.

Perhaps we would start to question our knowledge or philosophize, or build new theories with all this knowledge. New information would be created and you might feel that you need to get the word out. You might start to teach with all the information in you and go into discussions with others.

With all the social contact and sharing of different theories and lots and lots of information, you might learn about others. Oh my word, we are learning yet again!

I am not the best at philosophy I had to take it twice in college. I think the professor passed me the second time around out of pity. But I know I will never stop learning. I love to learn and teach. I admire those who are philosophers, As a Nurse Practioner, my would was about concrete facts. I finally did learn to think outside the box by studying the Seven Habits of Highly Successful People. I still read this book about once a year and always learn something new.
Thanks for writing such an inspirational post.
Sandy

Hey Steven,
I'm learning something new right now!!! Your teaching me something new so I guess not.

Tried and True

Elaine

I think there is always something new to learn. Each new discovery leads to additional avenues to explore. For me, the challenge is what to do with the knowledge...what action to take. Knowledge in itself...just takes up brain space.

As it goes it's not the quantity but rather the quality. So it's how we apply that which we have learned as learning is endless...

So I would say you have posed a "philosophical" question...a philosopher? Always a good thing to be...

“It’s not how much you learn that matters. It’s how much you remember”

So even if we were to learn everything there is to learn in this world, we most definitely won’t remember it all. Once that learning is forgotten we would then have to re-learn it.... so essentially there will always be something to learn.

Quite the profound post for a Friday! Lol.

In my nursing theory class I've become all too familiar with THEORY! It just generates more and more questions. Questions about myself, others, families, communities, populations, and nations.

Knowledge is a great tool to promote new research and generate new theories, especially ones we can apply to every day life! Thank you for your post:)

Hello Steven,

Certainly an interesting topic, Personally I think the phrase should of gone something like "The more we learn, the more we know; the more we know, the more there is to learn".

As i'm sure you know the human brain never stops learning, and thus the possibility for infinite learning is plausible.

There are situations in which it becomes harder to retain facts, the more facts you already know. That imposes a real limit on memory, however there situations where learning make it easier for you to learn more, which reinstates the theory, "we never stop learning".

Think back for a second one of the greatest minds throughout history, Sir Isaac Newton. English mathematician, astronomer, theologian, author and physicist, this man was widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time. And retained a vast amount of information I might add.

He not only held VAST knowledge, but he was still learning and accomplishing ground breaking feats. So, imagine if he was still alive today, I reckon you and I would both agree his accomplishments would go on for eons.

With that said, the more we learning, the more there is to learn. if our minds live on after our physical bodies are no more, we can learn and retain information forever.

This is quite intriguing, especially the last phrase - the less there is to learn. With all the new discoveries being made each day, I cannot imagine there being less to learn. Even if there were less, though, there is still a vast amount with what has been studied and written.

You couldn't have said it better.

That's very challenging question Steven. :)
I would say, yes and/or no depends on what context the statement is referring to. For example, if you are learning a certain very specific subject or skill set, the more you learn, the more you know and the less there is to learn. However, if you put that same statement to life, it becomes arguable.

As I know there's a proverb that says "We are learning from the day we born to the day we die" (poor translation - but that's the essence).

Final thought, I have to discard that statement from my dictionary as it's sounds coming from a lazy person :) (Personal opinion).

Thanks for sharing this thought provoking piece. :)

:)Joe

I like your take, I also disputed the quote. The context then becomes the deciding factor in both cases you stated.

I agree. :)

That was a piece to reckon with.
Learning never stops.
The more we learn, the more we know how much there is to learn and NOT the LESS there is to learn.

There's so much to learn and it only stops with the graveyards (ignorance not intended).

Thanks for heads up Steven.
:)

True, the graveyard will definitely halt that learning progression.

Thumbs up, Davan
