How Important are Autoresponders to You as an Affiliate Marketer?

Before we touch autoresponders one of the indispensable assets of any marketer is a profitable email list. Data suggests that in the short term, the aim is to generate a return of $2 for every $1 you put in. Essentially a 100 percent return. If you are able to retain a customer’s email, the value of that initial $1 spend, could reach as much as $38 over the lifetime of the relationship. Not bad when you think about it.

Whether you agree with the numbers, or not, the basic truth is that, the longer the opportunity to maintain a customer relationship, the higher the likelihood of increasing your return on investment.

If you agree with me then there are four key steps that we as affiliate marketers should pursue in building our customer relationships. We need to

  1. Attract – develop lead magnets (e.g. a free software subscription) to attract targeted customers
  2. Capture – design highly converting opt-in pages to capture your leads
  3. Nurture – have a follow-up sequence or system to nurture your leads
  4. Monetize – have affiliate links or your own products to monetize your list

I want to focus on the nurturing stage and leave the other steps for another post.

Nurturing the Customer Relationship

So you might ask how do you go about nurturing a relationship with someone with whom, in most instances, you have absolutely no relationship?

If it is not yet part of your communication toolbox as an Affiliate Marketer then I encourage you to get to know autoresponders as they are essential. It makes no sense to hand over all your traffic to an affiliate program sponsor with the only benefit to yourself being the commission in the instant.

What is an Autoresponder?

Specifically, autoresponders are 'e-newsletters that are sent automatically to your subscribers on your mailing list. They are ‘triggered’ based on rules and time intervals that you define.

I put it to you that you simply cannot achieve sustainability, really blow up and succeed, or more importantly scale as a marketer, without the use of autoresponders. Autoresponders are like a golden tool used to achieve many of the marketing tasks that are essential to your success as an online business.

Autoresponders are used to help build your customer list, keep in contact with your past customers, and develop a relationship with potential customers.

While you have to strike a delicate balance on the volume of emails, an autoresponder can be used to deliver a sequence of cleverly crafted emails to woo your customers. These emails typically are aimed to cause your customer to take action. For example to attend an (online) event or to make a purchase. It can also be used to deliver email courses, send reminders, and even to help build an opt-in list if you don’t already have one. There are many creative ways you can use your autoresponder to make more sales and to build customer relations.

Autoresponder Benefits

  1. Increase your response rate: Autoresponder emails typically will be opened faster than standard emails because they are triggered immediately upon a customer taking a particular action. For instance, you sign up for membership and receive an instant welcome message asking you to join a Facebook group.
  2. Save time: Sending emails manually can take an inordinate amount of time particularly if you have a large email list. By using an autoresponder the entire email sending process is automated.
  3. Engage your audience: Once a customer does not opt-out or unsubscribe from the email list you have the opportunity to continuously interact with the customer for your product launches, notifications, sales and so much more.
  4. Create an instant connection: From the very first autoresponder email you have an opportunity to establish a one on one relationship with your customer. This positive impression in the minds of customers can be bolstered by delighting your customers with VIP access, insider scoops, special discounts and much more.

It would appear that if you want to be a successful marketer then it is vital to have an autoresponder.

Do you have an autoresponder? What has been your experience with them?

All the best,

Hugh

I think it was that fellow that ran Microsoft who said; " If your business is not on the internet, then your business will be out of business"

Creating and managing your tribe can be well placed by utilizing an autoresponder; almost like a right of passage to the higher ground; a continuing work in progress for me.

Pleasure to meet you Sandra. Agreed an autoresponder should be considered at the same level of traffic and a list for us. They are part of our DNA.

Heeey, well I have one loaded with extras at a reasonable price. My education is not up to par and haven't got it running. It crossed my mind to just load up and. Deliver damn think in person. Now that would start relationship and I may never get home lol. Ill keep working at it. Ill make it work hell or high water. Good thing I can swim. Email list are extended life of your career.

Hey amiga you make me smile. Check out YouTube there are normally some pretty good step-by-step tutorials you can follow. Each instruction you get pause and then do it and so on. Before long you can add Autoresponder to your Gift of Gab repertoire

Yee Haw, I went with Get Response. They have more to offer.

I have one with Aweber... and am trying to build my subscriber list. It isn't filling up. I put an offer up on a sidebar and find it isn't doing anything there. So, I am going to have to do what I was trying to avoid... but apparently, it is the only way...

Put it up on a pop-up. I realize now that would be more effective than the method I am using now.

Another problem I have... what exactly do I send out? I am not very creative with newsletters or offers. I could probably use a little help in this area...

Thanks for this, Hugh. I will definitely think over what to add to my autoresponder.

If your going to use a popup - an exit intent popup is less annoying.

You can set that up using Aweber.

Also add your optin form strategically within your content.

As for your lead magnet to get people to join it depends what niche your in.

Things like a check list, tips, and such are good. Just be sure what you offer is unique.

As for your follow up emails - provide a ton of value.

Hope that helps

It does... thanks. I have a short free ebook offering by signing up.

I will look into it. Thanks.

When is come list building - test - test - test.

Test everything - your offer, the optin, the text, the colors, placement etc.

Hey Bob many product owners give their affiliates an email sequence template that they can customize. Not sure what you are selling however take an example from WA. If you go to the $ sign above click it and then click message campaigns. In there you will find several emails which can be made to suite your funnel. Let me know if this helps and what perhaps you might be selling

Now getting up and running with split testing. Wish me luck.

Sounds great - all the best.

I have an ebook offer they get free by signing up. It is on my WA promotion/MMO website.

Thanks for the input.

Bob

Part of the testing I was mentioning includes trying different offers. Have you considered changing your eBook into a cheat sheet, 10 tips or something along those lines. You can try that and see what the conversion is compared to your eBook.

People love quick and easy – cheat sheets and tips are easily consumed.

That's a good idea. I think the problem is really a traffic issue to my site. I will continue the ebook, but on my new site. I'll see what it does there first.

Thanks for the idea... I will keep this in mind if the ebook doesn't work... I'll change it to tips or a cheat sheet after.

It's definitely easier to test when you have more traffic as it can be done quicker. Good luck

😁👍

I have one, but the furthest I ever got with it was putting the form on my website. I think I gained about 30 subscribes, but never really built out any email messages to send.

I guess I got unnerved at that point and didn't think I had anything of value to send people in an email. Sometimes I think about cancelling the subscription since I'm not doing anything with it and saving the money.

Most of the product owners have email swipes (emails) just for affiliates. The gap may not be as big as you think it is. With those emails and autoresponder working you might get a chance to warm up your existing and better establish a relationship with new customers.

Hugh, that's a great idea! Thank you for mentioning it.

Sure thing Thomas. Helping each other is what we do.
