HELP! I can't Breathe!

Yesterday morning I had set out a pretty aggressive plan with all kinds of WA activities to complete. I got started early and was moving along quite nicely until I received a text about 10am from my sister saying, ‘I cannot BREATHE……HELP!”. I live a mere five minutes from her so I grabbed a shirt and rushed over. I carry keys to her place for emergencies like this as she has these massive asthma attacks from time to time.

I met her at the top of the second floor stairs trying to get her clothes on with her chest heaving violently. I had not seen her this bad in quite some time. The ‘Blue Puff’ or as Asthmatics know it, Ventolin Inhaler was not doing a thing. After much effort, I was able to get her into the car to head to St. Clair Hospital, a private medical facility. She could barely talk, her eyes were glassy and she was having problems breathing so I really sped over. I got there and the orderly got her out quick enough into a wheel chair after I answered some Covid questions. I went to park in the carpark only to see a hospital staff member running over to me, to say that they could not admit her. It seemed as though due to Covid19 there was some rule around admitting asthma patients. I was pissing blue but I could not debate with the guy as my sister was now back in the car looking worse than ever.

I then drove over to Westshore another private hospital 15 minutes away. They too did not admit her. Then to the Adventist hospital which looked promising but the doctor, looking ever so penitent at me when he said no but to take her to the government facility, St. James medical, 5 minutes away.

There she was immediately seen and put on a full handful of tablets and a round of puffs (inhaler). Mind you she was not admitted into the hospital but had to stay at the Emergency entrance, curbside, under a tent with attendants, such is the fear that Covid brings.

After several rounds of puffs which only helped slightly the doctor said to me that her chest was still way to tight so she was then hooked up to a Nebulizer machine. This in all took 7 hours to finally settle her down. I felt so sorry for her but thankfully she was given enough relief to be discharged about 7pm.

The whole ordeal made me think again of several questions which I now want to pose to you

  • What is your business continuity plan if a health issue knocked you down and off your feet?
  • Is your online business setup to continue to run if you came off the gas for a few weeks?
  • Can anyone take over or continue to push your business along?
  • Do you have sufficient passive income streams built up yet to continue earning?

I would love to hear your thoughts or any of these as I set about to reassess my own plans.

I am HORRIFIED that the hospital treated your sister like this. Have you had a discussion with her pulmonologist as to what to do in the future if this happens again? Covid-19 looks like it will be around for awhile. I do NOT think that the hospital should have handled your sister's case like this. They could have put her in one of those suits like the ebola patients wear and admitted her. For crying out loud. She could have died. This makes me sick. Is your sister okay, now?

Hey Jaye your concern is touching. She is a lot better but it took a while. Sometimes the health supports which would be customary in the developed world are non-existent here. And you have to adjust. Know how to navigate the system quickly. We are better prepared for next time

I'm very glad that she is doing well and you have a plan moving forward:)

Thanks so much Jaye.

You're welcome! Take care!

Well Hugh,
I'm really glad you had the plan in place where you could unlock and rescue your sister! What a scary ride, hospital to hospital, rejected at all but, of course, the LAST One!

You have the knack of causing me to THINK~ As a beginner, I'm in the position to create those plans. Thank you for good advice.

Hey Shirley I had good teachers from which to learn. I am honoured that I can cause a spark between the synapses. Have a good night.

Wow, is your sister feeling and getting better Hugh? Asthmatic condition indeed can derail anyone day. Being asthmatic before for short period of time, nothing is worst than being more panic. To answers those questions, no I definitely don't have contingency plan, so I better plan for
It!
Thank you for the reminder and sharing Hugh. :)

Hey Kartini she is still not back to 100 but getting there. Thanks for asking. Yes even if you do not have a contingency as yet it's a good idea to start at least thinking in that direction. Wishing you well and a super weekend.
Hugh

Glad to know she is at least getting there. Yup its on my “must do” list. Wish you have a great weekend as well. :)

You too Katrin

Hugh such a horrific incident, there's is no humanity among some since Covid-19. I have your sister in my prayers. I could understand your frustration my son suffers from Asthma and since Covid, I pray he does not experience an attack since we cannot get to Canada.

As for your several questions, as an entrepreneur, we don't really have any of the contingency plans in place.
You have given me a lot to think about.

I hope your son is doing well, Anjanie.

Contingency planning is imperative for us Entrepreneurs and Solopreneurs.
Hugh's post is one fo the priority list.

Have a good day.

Wow that is quite a scare. Praying for your Sis Hugh. Definitely need a bigger game plan and more streams of income. And another life insurance policy on my wife and myself. We just dealt with the cost of a funeral. Last month when my father in law passed away with no life insurance.. It was very costly. wiped me out.

Yeah Mike insurance like other safety nets when not used you get lulled into a feeling that maybe they are not necessary given the cost. But like you and I have experienced when the shi@ hits the fan that insurance policy is a sight for sore eyes.

My condolences on your loss
Hugh
