How do you build a habit to do things in advance?

Hi WA Family,

How do you build a habit to do things in advance? This is more of a question to ask the WA community to share experiences if you can.

There are a few things that I am envious of which I have not been able to do myself:

  • Able to complete multiple blog posts and schedule in advance.
  • Able to complete and schedule multiple social media posts in advance

There is only this number of hours we all have each day. I have a daily recurring schedule of things I want to do and being able to achieve them is already an achievement, as there are always sudden things that will be thrown at me every so often to will cause me to lose my balance.

What are some tips and experiences that you guys can share?

I can never imagine how one could schedule multiple Pinterest pins just for 1 day of posting? How much time is needed to do the design work in Canva? It takes me maybe 15 mins to reconfigure a Pinterest size pin in canva from a FB or IG sized post. So it is so amazing how it is possible to think about doing multiple pins a day. Any sharing on this from those who can please?

And for blog posts, how did you manage to pre-prepare many blog posts in advance? I know perseverance and consistency are what some might say, but I think there is more than meets the eye, you know?

Appreciate your sharing.

Thank you.

Regards,
Richard

I haven't been able to do blog posts in advance for some time, now, but have made a firm commitment to put up two posts a week, on the same day, every week. So far it's keeping me on schedule. I don't know, either, how people can get things done ahead of time. There's just me, and too much to do.

Hi Richard, probably not quite the answer to your question but I use the 80/20 principle , worth a search , in reality most of what we do is a waste of time, I kid you not!

Focussing in on core activity is what really matters.

For example people spend ages on bells and whistles and not enough time on writing content or key word search...

People spend hours searching for another plug in that slows their site down and that the audience does not really care about...

80 per cent of viewing on netflix will come from 20 per cent of the programmes

80 per cent of airline profits come from 20 per cent of the passengers...

Great question.... I will let you know when I have mastered it! :) Phil

Hi Richard
I have been coaching productivity for about 40 years. Most of the comments below are great.
The way I would put it is:

Get organised -
List everything everything that is on your mind ... however important.
Then prioritise. Make sure that your top priorities are very clear. You need a good method for this. Pen and paper works but is inefficient over time.
I use a Notion database for this. If you are using Notion I’ll happily share my setup.

Get things done -
Create a habit of attacking your priorities daily.

Stay organised -
Regularly review the list and your priorities. Personally I review at least once per week.

There is more and this is the framework.

I have my own way of getting things done but the best book I ever read on this is by David Allen and is of course called ‘Getting Things Done’.

:-)

Fantastic, Richard! Thanks Coach! :)

I use MS To-Do. I have 5 self-development To-Do that I am doing daily each day. This is my morning ritual for the past 90 days where I took up a challenge and this has become my habit. Takes 1 to 1.5 hr.

I have 1 daily To-Do that supports my niche product effort and it is going well.

I have 1 daily To-Do that supports my website blog.

The above would probably take me 2 to 2.5 hrs.

What is then something I am hoping to rebuild a habit is to target on daily blog and daily social media activities. I find this tough because I project a 4 hr daily effort which is hard to clock and focus.

And I have a 2 year old now sitting on my lap seeking my attention... lol.

Any advice you can give me?

OK Richard ... As a coach I ask questions. My guess is that you don't really need advice... you are clearly highly motivated and perhaps just a little stuck in looking for improvements with what you already do. In practice, I rarely give advice because invariably the people I work with already know better! You are the expert in your environment.

Do you have a writing 'production line' going?
I.E. How do you control your workflow for your writing?

I am happy to discuss here or if you prefer, feel free to send a PM...
Richard

Draw up a To-do list. Schedule your writing in your list. Most times we do what we put in writing. You will need to will yourself to do this even when you do not feel like doing it. Your big hairy goals will be the motivator to make you do what you do not feel like doing. That's why we should never lose sight of our goals.

You are absolutely right. Thanks for sharing.

Richard, I'm not yet 3 months, so I can't do more than one blog per day, but this is what I do, both for my website and here at WA.

Go with the inspiration and flow that you're feeling. If after, I have written one blog or post and I still feel pumped up to do another one. I just do it

This is done so that later when you're not feeling like writing or you have an emergency there's always one in the back, so to speak, that you can use

You can also create a schedule or time table yourself to do one at selected days and time. It is always best to note.

This take time, it is also just a matter of practice practice practice until it become a ritual

Awesome. Building habits takes time! :)

It certainly does
