"What is this moderator thing?"
Being offered a moderator position can have enormous perks. When my son asked what this thing is, I had to explain in 13-year-old terms. The Webopedia has a great explanation as well.
1) A moderator helps conversations to stay on topic.
2) They ensure the thread is not overwhelmed by bots, bugs and spam.
3) They remove insulting posts, and may need to remove a user who does this deed repeatedly without regard to other people.
GO-GO GADGET SPAM & BOT BUSTER!Furthermore, a moderator is a person who cares about the mission of the business it protects. The brand and values must be important, in order to take care of the user experience. From peer response, a rude commenter may just head for the hills. Other inconsiderate bullies with keyboards need more direction. While this is not the best part of the position, it protects the service of the organization, and its community. A moderator is not a thing, but a human being. They bring a team together by creating a wealth of information relevant to those who wish to discuss it free from intrusions in the way of insults.
An administrator has the authority to assign the moderator capability to a user in order to support their chat, while the discussion carries on seamlessly. You may not notice the moderator duty come to light, unless they are absent from a discussion on a hot topic that has many disputed opinions. It is okay to have passion on a subject, as long as the heat is not directed at someone or overly abrasive. This takes discernment and experience.
I hope this quick explanation will help someone who would like to offer the honor or perform these functions. If you are wanting a moderator, it will be best to ask someone who works in the area of your niche, actively responds to posts and you have known as an advocate. Those who would like to fill the position may take some time to achieve a high standard by asking others who have the title for tips.
